Yes, I would use .png files with transparency. You can use other people's styles with textures as a study guide by going to Style > Edit >Watermark then clicking on the specific watermark and save as to your computer.

Thanks. the Padauk is mine. Edited from something else but I don't recall what. The Wenge is from a pretty good photo of it. The QWSO was from an image I found with a Google search but it was made usable by our very own Modelhead and in a thread in the Materials forum.

Thank you all. Not much change but here's the most recent version. the center door has been moved to the front. All that's left to do is the drawer boxes and the drawer guides. The guy for whom I'm drawing this wants to see it with overlay drawers although I would like him to build it with the inset drawers as I've drawn it. Once those things are done it'll be time to make up the working drawings for him. Hopefully I'll be able to post some images of the real thing one of these days. [image: th_Barts_Cabinet1.jpg]

Vray and MentalRay are also, under normal circumstances and use, 'biased'. But I do not expect them to result in lower quality than other more popular 'unbiased' engines. In fact, Mray and Vray are so popular in the industry because of their amazing speed and quality... kinda why I like them and KT too. 'Unbiased' does not mean 'better' it means 'unbiased'. In fact, Giannis (developer of Kerkythea) stated @unknownuser said: here's a small lesson about unbiased rendering: Unbiased rendering was first introduced back in 1986. Yes! It was not introduced by a commercial renderer. Just marketed nicely (but this is just my opinion). Writing an unbiased renderer is simpler than writing a biased one! Yes! Developing a path tracer or even Kelemen's MLT is easier than writing photon mapping. There are many more unbiased renderers that you can think off! Virtually all ray tracers can turn to unbiased rendering relatively easily. Sunflow for example can operate in path tracing mode. Overall! I see users reproducing the same information found in commercial leaflets but never digging a bit more in theory or.. history! Wink best regards. The idea of a 'biased' render is that it makes some assumptions, and tries to give you what it thinks you want... it's, you know, biased... in a good way. The idea of an 'un-biased' render is that it calculates bounces of light until they stop boucing... so if you have bad materials, this will 'bias' an 'unbiased' render engine in a bad way... but with a 'biased' render like KT's PM+FG it will be more 'forgiving'... especially with the higher quality presets. This is because Giannis and the team have put a lot of work in getting them to give a less-render-experienced user quick and easy presets. The presets are not, of course, meant to be a silver bullet, but they are meant for you to load and learn from. Nor are the lower or medium settings meant for client presentation (though I do it all the time because, as Dave pointed out, they don't know or probably even care about the difference because KT's PM+FG is an amazing machine). BiPT and MLT and MLT/BiPT and PTP are meant for a scene with less direct light... MLT cranks very well on scenes lit completely by indirect light... but of course, so does PM+FG.. and with the right tonemapping, well... it's great...(Vray and Mray, as far as I can tell, have the right tonemapping, etc. already built in and transparent... KT is working on this...) BiPT handles caustics (like sparkles onto a wall from an adjacent water surface) well, depending on the light source, in my experience, and PTP is much faster with exteriors lit with only sun and sky... so each have their advantages. You can't expect to learn a sophisticated program like this in a day or even a year. You can get great results in a day, and better in a year... but I still learn new things all the time. that's part of the fun. May want to read more at comparison thread between many engines...

@unknownuser said: Dave that looks pretty cool in hidden line form, it really shows some modelling skills to produce so quickly and to such small model size. Very nice work. Any chance, if you get time of a small tut showing your methods in creating one or two components? Thank you Dylan. Let me see if I can come up with a tutorial showing how I did part of the clamp. The cast parts are all done using the same basic method. I'll see if I can show my work.

Yes, the size problem is strange. I know that when you put more spaces in the prompt value it works prompts=["help file............"] but why this ? No logical explanation...

@anssi said: What is meant by "thick glass"? Must it be two parallel faces close to each other, or must the sides be modelled too? If you have a couple of minutes, you should check out the SkIndigo tutorials for version 0.9: http://www.indigorenderer.com/joomla/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2317 They are interactive skippies. 'Thick Glass' would be glass that is modeled as a closed volume. I think for windows, you would not have to model the sides to get the correct result (not sure though). It is pretty easy just to push/pull your windows 1/2" in order model the window correctly. However, you can also avoid this step by using the 'Thin Glass' material. It works pretty well for windows but I would not use it for glassware. If you use 'Thin Glass' make sure the exponent (glossiness) is set to 1 million so you get near-perfect reflections. Lower values will result in a glossy appearance. If you use the 'Glass' material preset, you will get perfect realistic glass, but the glass must have thickness. I think your render was slow because of the high resolution and the large amount of windows that cause the light rays to keep bouncing back and forth. This is also the reason why materials that are completely white tend to stay noisy much longer (lots of light bouncing)

Wow, nice render Dave! I thank you! I was thinking about this cabinet though (as there were "critiques" in the KT forums as I remember about how the lower shelves being lit). Why don't you try to insert some (string) of lights vertically on the left & right sides, right in the front maybe even just hidden by the doors? They could then light the whole interior more evenly...

Or adjust the radius of them... Actually you visit the KT forums - there's a nice tut (by whom I now forget) about soft shadows with sun. This should apply to spot lights, too but surely you could adjust them in SU. But then only export those and merge into the model

Yep, all looks fantastic and the icons do look pretty sexy! It was a big surprise for me after not really being around the SU forums for the last few months to see the news about the Google Groups this morning. Big thanks to Coen for taking this on and carrying on the essence of what was the SU Pro Forums.

Thank you, Daniel. Yes, I don't think there'd be no problem with the footrest. The bolt alignment would be similar to putting hinges on adjacent sides of a square box and expecting the lid to open. [image: W1U8_stoolfootrest.jpg]
