We added an option to show shadows on "shadows and surfaces in shade" or "shadows only"

Basically, with the second option, surfaces which do not face the sun, and wold not be lit by the sun even if nothing else cast a shadow on them, are ignored for the second option.

Here is a Sketchy Shadow version with shadows on "shadows and surfaces in shade".
(Also I changed the scale on the hatch pattern to have more white space between lines)

And seriously - I think, that the lighting on the first picture was a little better. And reflection in the mirror - this is the first thing that I saw - there is no reflection, so it looks a bit strange.

If there is no simple solution, maybe this is a point for the wishlist for SU9?!

Unfortunately Honeycomber uses some pro-only API methods to subtract solids.
You could try OSCoolean Boolean http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=112055#p112055 - which works on free.
You will need to make a set of smaller solid shapes arranged in a 3d matrix [to form the 'holes'], ensuring that none of them stick through the surface of the original or leave a very thin outer shell - and then subtract those in turn from the original solid [the Outliner might help with these selections ?].
It's more work, but it will do it...
There are also some free suitable 'Shell' tools that will 'hollow-out' a solid - look for those in the Plugins Index...

but I tried some more exports and moved around the geometry to see which entries in the collada-file changed. One line (perhaps something like the origin of the group?) had very small values in the original file:

and changed to:

<matrix>1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1</matrix>

after moving the group around and back to the origin. So I think the problem was not the geometry itself but the position of the group relative to the origin?!
