Sorry to be defensive but next time you want to compare SU with other software packages ask yourself how good they are at modelling and how supportive their forum is!

RE: Can you make locked objects unclickable?
Yes, select object, right click, "Lock" - Job done.

RE: Accurate placement of section planes?
A couple of other options:
-
Draw a temporary face where you want the cut, select create section plane and click on the face. Once you have the cut plane established you can delete the temporary face.
-
Create a section plane using a known position e.g. a floor slab or wall and then use Move tool to position it by entering the required distance in the VCB/measurement box.

RE: AutoCAD Architecture 2014
I'm pretty sure SU/LO covers most of those bases and it's a lot more fun.

RE: How to paste items into a component

Unlike Dave's option the dragged component will stay in it's original location which may mean you still have to edit it anyway.
Trevor, what do you mean by this? With my method the geometry which is being copied and pasted will indeed remain in the same location by using Paste in place. And your method with the Outliner won't work if the geometry Penguin wants to copy is not already in a component or group. Loose geometry does not appear in the Outliner.
You are 100% right Dave, but I would always try to avoid leaving any geometry "loose" in which case the outliner solution is an option if you just want to gather or re-order your groups & components. If you need to paste in a new location or move the group or object then it may not be the quickest solution.
Not sure where I got the "copy" option from must have been dreaming of SU 2013

RE: How to paste items into a component
If you are familiar with the outliner window you can also drag and drop (& copy) groups and components between other groups & components in your model. Unlike Dave's option the dragged component will stay in it's original location which may mean you still have to edit it anyway. Just another option.

RE: Adding Solid Volume to Attributes
Simple maths, if you have the volume and divide by a constant dimension that gives the area, so assuming your curves are in a single direction divide the volume by the base area will give the linear dimension. This is where my reference to facearea() came from. The presence of holes will affect the calculation!

RE: Creating a model starting with a Exterior Elevation CAD file
It also depends on the accuracy of the original 2D draughter. I'm working on a scheme where the elevations and the plans are slightly different. I've opted to work from the floor plan as the most reliable projection especially with the curved on plan wall sections!

RE: Quickly paint internal wall faces black
Once you sort out your face orientation you may find TIG's Section Cut Face plug works as expected. The only edit I usually need to apply is to delete unwanted faces which obscure the room, all my other voids close as expected.

RE: Adding Solid Volume to Attributes
I have been looking at something similar for reporting areas. As TIG points out if you open and edit the shape without stretching the DC variables fail to update. The work around I found was to use "Interact" with the "on click" function carrying out one of the calculations e.g. SET( "myvariable", FACEAREA ("material")) which also seems to force an update of the other affected variables. Not sure if would work on TIG's volume but it might be worth a try.
I still find I'm looking at the Entity Info window to double check the results

RE: Multiple solid subtractions help?
The OP sounds like a lot of work. What are you trying to show? There are other options such as using image files for patterns, sticking a thin component to the wall to give the impression of 3D or using a component with hole cutting. For the latter as long as you maintain the lines for cutting the hole you can include as many sub components or groups you like in the component definition to fill or surround the hole.

RE: Help with hidden components in scenes for layout
Scenes will remember an objects hidden status (as long as it isn't nested). Have you looked at using SU's "Outliner" it may be more suited to what you are doing?

RE: How to route a groove on the curved wall of a hole?
The other option would be to create the o-ring as a group or component and position it in the hole. If that doesn't look right for presentation purposes you could then select the hole wall faces and intersect them with the "rest of the model" and trim to suit.
Sometimes you never see the detail and don't need to model it!

RE: Section planes keep showing up in views
I keep three basic Styles in my template to cover Plans, Sections & Elevations. This is because each one is generally required to show the image differently with variations on cutting planes, profiles and rendering. You may need more depending on what you are doing.

RE: Version Control of Models
Dunno if this helps but if you go to Model Info > File you could use the description box to maintain a history of updates.

RE: Scene Naming BUG !!!
Known about this for ages so I'm careful with my renaming. +1 it's a bug that needs fixed.

RE: Reversed text

The old days of backside (diazo) printing are gone. The text shouldn't do that, you should have to have a ruby to MAKE IT go backwards. LO shortcoming.
I think you are right Peter, the odds are that when you flip things about you would like the text to retain its justification and orientation although there may be ocassions when you want reversed text but that could best be handled through the attribute box. One for the 2013 wishlist?

Arcad, how do you make the drawings when you work with SU? Make the model no problem, make nice pictures in 3d no problem but exact drawings in 2d???? I think Layout is to instable and weak.
You may be right, LO3 does have many flaws, but I also believe that things are about to change for the better under Trimble's stewardship and LO will become a professional product to compete in the architectural CAD arena. For the time being I enjoy working in SU far more than I ever did in Autobad or Archicad and the output from LO is more than adequate for me to secure repeat business. As I said before "get the right tool for the job"

RE: Reversed text
No easy solution other than rt-clk -> flip on each text block after flipping the whole drawing. A prime example where you just have to get your head down and get on with it until we get Ruby in LO.
There may be a moral to the story - Make regular backups and consider creating a new file before carrying out any major revisions.
