In LO pick the view, go to the Sketchup Model tool box and click on Styles. Check you haven't overridden the viewing style in LO?

RE: Solar North Toolbar -- Where is it in SU 2014?
Worked this time. Thanks Thomas, I was beginning to think it had been dumped. Still not sure why it isn't installed with the main package?

RE: Can I have a Gripes & Bitchin' for Su 2014 thread?
Maybe it wasn't Google holding back SU all these years. JB possibly lacks the vision or even a finger on the pulse of industry to realise the rest of the design software market is moving forward and becoming more competitive...

Great...
From the warehouse this morning...
This extension has not been marked as being compatible with your version of SketchUp. You may experience usability issues if you try to install this extension.

RE: Can I have a Gripes & Bitchin' for Su 2014 thread?
I was left seriously embarrassed and out of pocket recently by Layout. I was stupid enough to believe the DWG export delivered useable documents. Not even close. Ended up having to fork out for AutoCAD to redraw all the details so they could be read by the rest of the team. If Trimble want to be taken seriously this is one area that needs a major overhaul because I can't see any improvement in LO 2014.
And as for the SU upgrade... 12 months development and we get an upgraded arc tool, a TAG tool and better shadows. Awesome... Not. What about basic 2D functions like fillet and chamfer that would simplify the process of creating shapes ready for extrusion? Looks to me like Trimble spent all their time upgrading to Ruby 2.0 so all the generous plugin developers can do their job for them.

RE: Layout 2013 Repeatedly Crashes -- Is My File Size Too Big?
Fire up Task Manager (ctrl / alt / Del) and look at the memory usage. I had 2Gb on my PC and it was crashing a lot. Upgraded to 4Gb and it was fine after that.

Many thanks! So much new stuff to explore I had already forgotten about smart folders.

SU in Mavericks Finder app
Finally got my iMac I'm looking for pointers on using Finder to identify my files. Is it possible to add .skp as a file "kind" so they a listed separately rather than being bundled under "other" with all the other obscure file types I have floating around?

RE: Use Sketchup instead of Archicad?
ArchiCAD for kitchen design sound a bit like using a sledge hammer to crack a nut!
Ex ArchiCAD user here. I decided SU was far more fun for designing and modelling and still do; but as you may be reading elsewhere the "pro" Layout aspect has many frustrations, and some benefits. Unfortunately for Layout commercial pressure has taken over and I now export my views as dwg and xref them into AutoCAD LT due to file sharing compatibility issues with dwg (Do a search on "DWG Export" and you will find a list of the issues I had). I really liked a lot about Layout but the frustrations of achieving what I needed to do were costing me, not the client, money.
There are alternatives to AutoCAD LT e.g. Dassault Systeme's Draftsight which is free if Layout doesn't meet your 2D requirements.

RE: [Plugin] SketchUcation Tools 2.6
This is a great addition to SU and it keeps getting better. Love the updating notification, just updated four plugins that I didn't realise had been modified!
I hope I've not missed the memo; installation of plugins is so simple, is there an easy way to uninstall unwanted plugins?

We definitely have this one on our list of "often requested" improvements!
And hopefully DWG export is up there too Marc...

RE: REVIT vs ARCHICAD
I'm running in the opposite direction! I had ArchiCAD and it can be the right tool for the job depending on the type of work, but I'm generally happier modelling in SU (Pro). Unfortunately due to the total failure of LO to export anything of value in DWG format I am having to go back to a copy of AutoCAD / DraftSight, and importing xrefs from SU to be able to work with a key customer who insists on having editable DWG files. If you need DWG output then Revit may be the better of the two, but ArchiCAD can export DWG as well.
<rant>I'm yet to be convinced of the mythological Holy Grail of BIM and expert CAD systems; the first thing they do is generally restrict flexibility and creativity and then they tie you in knots chasing data input errors and looking for overrides when parts of the drawing don't connect properly. Make sure you do real world tests on any system before committing</rant>

RE: Command input autocad style?
I'm quite happy just using the icons, there are so few of them it's easy to hit the right one quickly

Tekla BIMsight
Anyone using this? The latest release 1.9.1 will now import SKP files. I am not a fan of the BIM hype but I have just downloaded it to see what it can do for model sharing.
More info...

RE: Export DWG
And while Trimble are fixing this, would it be too much to ask to be able to export SU to DWG/DXF using SU layers rather than just line, profiles & section cuts?

RE: Export DWG
Oh POOP!!! This is taking me back 30 years to AutoBAD 2D land At least Draftsight is free for now...

Export DWG
Just had to export my files into DWG model space for use by others in AutoCAD. It hasn't gone well...
-
The end user has to change their background to white if the exported text is black otherwise the text is invisible. Text also can't be changed to "bylayer" or any other colour without editing each piece of text.
-
The text background masking boxes shrink to tiny rectangles
-
All text is changed to "Top Left" insertion including text which should have been middle & centre resulting in numerous text clashes.
-
Linetype scales are incorrect and need setting to drawing scale x 10 to look right eg at 1:50 LTSCALE needs set to 500
-
Dimensions disintegrate into lines and text
-
Angular dimensions vanish
-
Clipped vector scenes unclip & explode
-
Text leader line arrow heads explode
Anyone know if I'm doing something wrong or if there are workarounds before I'm forced by my client to move to exporting my SU models to DWG and abandon LO for Draftsight?

RE: 20 X 20 FLOOR PLAN
Design wise I like what you have put together. Showing how the light flows through the building would be interesting to render. My preferred render option is Twilight but try the demo before you make any decisions.
Just a minor point on having the desk at the top of the stairs... I hope the owners don't have a chair with castors on a smooth floor and a tendency to kick back from the desk or they could be in for a

RE: How much would you Pay? To improve SketchUp
@arklandesign said:
So Yes Trimble is unlikely to mess with this winning combination, but i still suspect that they have long term plans that will significantly improve it.
And there you have it in a nut shell. A popular product at the right price, a revenue stream from Pro upgraders and a slow release of features that keeps people wanting more. I've have SuperPro on my hard drive, in my case ArchiCAD, but for now I prefer SU and will tough it out with finger's crossed for accelerated development under Trimble of evolutionary workflow functions rather than a myriad bloatware commands.
