I know this is digging up an old thread, but at least it's mine to dig up! After having the issue of the sketchup.exe process not unloading since the original post, the issue seems to have resolved itself. What I did was to update/install several of Chris's plugins (of the "Chris Fullmer Tools" variety) that I had installed, and the Kerkythea exporter. I'm not sure which one of these scripts/plugins caused the issue if any, but if anybody else is having the issue and has some of these installed, they may want to try updating their files as well. Absolutely no other system changes were made (Windows updates, etc...). Using SU version 7.0.10247. Files changed: SU2KT component stringer * perpendicular face tools * Greeble 2 3 line tools * Scale & rotate multiple * Select outer edges * Components onto faces * new install, the rest were updates.

I told you above not to be happy with this YET! It means that your video subsystem doesn't support OpenGL sufficiently. If you have a decent video card, you should try to update its driver and try SU with tis hardware acceleration ON (otheriwse SU can become substantially slower). Now if you don't have a decent card (like if you have an integrated chipset for instance), you cannot do too much but use SU without hardware acceleration.

What Chris says. It seems to be the solution here (and quite straightforward). Right click > Intersect > ...with model OR (if you select both surfaces beforehands) ...selected

If you only need a very rough model you can try the method in this tutorial: extrusion intersect.skp If you need a decent model, youd be much better of modelling the duck manually, using the profiles as reference.

Thanks for the posts and feedback. Looking around other forums and posts and yes I guess its not doable in SU and has to be hand rendered externally. I wonder how difficult it would be to add to the software. If you can change the style on everything in one file should it not be easy for the software to style a individual component and have different components with different styles within one file? Would certain save a lot of time. Thanks

I've written a beginning Ruby tutorial. Since I'm very new to Ruby, its all still very fresh in my mind what I needed to learn to get started writing scripts for SketchUp. So I tried to put all into a simple tutorial. This includes pre-script writing info, like where to find the necessary info, what text editor to use, how to test code inside of SU, and then I write a script and explain what all the code does. This is all in about 10 pages. So its short and very direct (unlike this post). So check it out. See if it helps. It shows how to write a code that iterates through all geometry in the model and make an array that holds all the edges, one for the faces, one for the components, and one for groups. So all you would need to do is to take one of those arrays (I'll use the faces array I made in the example below) and do something like: entities.erase_entities faces Hope that helps. Feel free to post over in the Ruby forum once you get into the coding and have direct questions about it. Hope that helps, Chris

The plug in worked really well but I saved a backup, this one may end up in the do not render pile. Has anyone had this trouble with photomatch before, could be my user error. [image: mxlb_ouch.JPG]

Yes, I highly agree with August. This is a very very useful dynamic component. Doing woodworking as a hobby (almost full time) It is true that we spent much time drawing doors and this DC will save me quite a bit of time Tank you Eric

I'm a millimeter away from switching from SU to Modo. It isn't as easy to just pick up and use at first, but as I learn it, I'm starting to think that, inferencing engine aside, I can be ultimately faster in Modo (for what I actually do, not just extruding blocks) than I can even approach in SU. Modo 401 now imports SolidWorks. (Huge for my situation.) Modo can do a full-screen preview render using Global Illumination with environment in seconds, sometimes actually as fast or FASTER than SU can update the same scene with SU shadows and profile lines in the actual scenes I'm doing. Modo won't choke on mere thousands or tens of thousands of polygons. Modo 401 can be had for $895 at some resellers, compared to the $795 we paid for a network license of SU. Modo does instancing and 'replicating', which means it can get into the millions of polygons compared to thousands in SU. I'm not saying it is better than SU in every way for ArchViz, but for my needs, it IS far superior. On the other hand, a lot of people are doing ArchViz in Modo now. Of course, both apps use polygons and can use .obj, so using both together is a great option.

You can always learn a lot from other models. It's really worth downloading and decomposing the ones posted in the Newbie or SketchUp Discussions as replies for others' questions.

HI IronSheik, That character was made as an example for a dynamic component (new feature of Sketchup 7) and this is why you can simply and easily "change" his shirt colour with the finger button of the DC Toolbar. However dynamic components are "regular" components in a way that if you double click on them, you can select the individual faces inside (or in case of further, nested components you can double click to edit further) and change the colour and such. Note however that editing dynamic components so that they remain (and work correctly as) dynamic components is a "Pro feature" only.

Autodesk also has the free TrueView application that besides having almost all the viewing and printing functionality of full AutoCad can convert newer DWG files to older (even very old) formats. There is a link (the "DWG From Autodesk" button)to the download on the main Autodesk webpage. Anssi
