thanks greyhead for the input. i went ahead and redid the neck portion again. i didnt even think about bending the neck at the same angle as the headstock. i need to open my mind about sketchup and realize that anything can be done. i tend to rush and get a sloppy model and then just try to keep working with it when problems arise. i will post pics if i can get the volute just right. till then i will keep the back of the neck the same. thanks again.

It works a treat ! Thanks again for the advice. In Illustrator, after adding plenty more nodes (Object menu) one goes back th the same menu for "Simplify" then choose "straight lines" (in fact I use a French set up, I assume those are the English terms used in the menus). Once in Sketchup, the Makefaces plug-in is essential to enable push-pull extrusion. All this enables one to convert vectorized texte or logos into 3D forms. Cool.

Yeah, definitely, this can now only be done by editing the component but then it scales all entities. A workaround could be to use subcomponents which you can scale from outside of their entities while leaving others the original size. Of course you'd need to make the parent component unique but the inside geometry could remain the same.

@outersketcher said: ...Anyway, I figured it out. I needed to ungroup each element before intersecting them... Well, esson learned; the intersection lines are always created in the context you are in. If there are two groups and you are outside their context and you make an intersection, the newly created lines will be outside the groups so they won't create faces within the groups.

Another way would be to draw a line or construction line parallel to and at the appropriate distance from the object you're viewing, snap the camera to the end points, and set a scene at each location. You can adjust field of view and height at each camera position. There's a ruby at Smustard that shows you the position and view of your camera if you think that might help too. Wyatt

Hi Matt, I don't know if this is what you have, but... Sometimes when you use the tape measure tool and move it while holding the left mouse button SU draws guide lines. If that's what's happening, you can get rid of them in the Edit Menu - Delete Guides. Tom

It depends how detailed you want the material to be. The maximum size I have made (or can be made without wasting your time and processor power) is 1024x1024 pixels. But this size really ought to be reserved for materials like a large sample of brick or stone that can be repeated without any obvious tiling...something like maybe 20 bricks wide by 50 bricks high. Other samples of textures can be much smaller. Most would be either 256x256 or 128x128; some can even be as small as 64x64. It is best to keep the sizes as multiples of 2 in this way, because they are more easily handled by the graphics processor....not a problem with one or two materials, but if you have dozens of them any small delays can multiply. In order to get some materials of a specific aspect ratio to tile seamlessly, you may not be able to have both dimensions conforming to these sizes, so just choose 1 side and let the other be whatever it is.

It's not that the images are pngs, per se, that is the problem. It's something about the way they have been produced. They all have a white traingle at the bottom corner in the materials browser, indicating that there is a degree of transparency...but there isn't. They are all on Layer0 in Photoshop instead of being flattened onto the Background layer but Layer0 is itself 100% opaque so there shouldn't be a problem. You actually don't need to save in another format; all you need do is flatten the image to the background layer...or even just open in it PS and immediately save it again, then reload into SU for the problem to just go away. I'm not sure what problem there is in the png files themselves. Technically, just opening a file and resaving it shouldn't have any effect, but it does. I'm just posting this in case anyone gets the idea that imported png files don't receive shadows....they do.

Hi David, Sorry to hear your first experience with a z-corp machine left a bit to be desired. However, the level of detail on the model is very nice. Was the model for a healthcare clinic? Seams can be tricky to work with...with a bit of work you can get pretty solid surfaces where the edges touch. Yet, they can take a bit of time. Here's a few photos of before and after. Also, thought you might get a kick out of this small bathroom and room layout we did for a client that builds temporary housing plans using SketchUp. Amazing what can come out of 3D Warehouse and eventually a 3d printer. How did the model work for your client meeting? Attached is the style with a different line style. If you want the style Solo used, replace the line style with Ross's FF Scratchy Ink.

What i want is to draw a house, and define a way from room to room as (directed/undirected)graph in sketchup. After that i would like to parse skp-file and extract that graph, so i can run some algorithm on it. Hope this is understandable so far, my english is not so good as it should be , if not so ask please... Thanks a lot for your help!
