Oh yeah ... please don't overlook Indigo either, if unbiased is your thing. Great SU plugin, excellent output, unbeatable price.

Also, at work, I've grabbed hold of all the old computers which has been replaced by newer models. Instead of throwing them away I've hooked them up to a renderfarm. It's only five old P4 2.6GHZ-3.2GHZ comps, but they sure help when deadline is looming.

What version are you using? Can you send a screenshot of the render and your settings and maybe we can help more.

    Deathcould,

I'm surprised you're having problems with Vray for SU's speed- it's pretty much the fastest renderer there is, it knocks out interior daylit renders in 1/20th of the time that Vue does and 1/100th of the time that Maxwell takes! (yep, I know, it's not comparing like for like, but still). If you follow the tutorials in the standard VfSU manual and load it's bundled visopt settings and skp files you should be getting good results very fast. Other than that my top tips would be to avoid using Quasi-Monte Carlo engine for anything other than daylit interiors- it's way slower than Irradiance Map combined with Light Cache. If you are doing daylit interiors then combining the IM and QMC engines will get you very good results (95% as good as unbiased renderers). For beginners QMC pretty much runs without much messing about- once you get the hang of VfSU you can start increasing the subdivisions into the hundreds if you want but figures below 20 are good enough for most models. I almost always use IM as my primary engine and it is here that you can adjust balance speed vs. quality the most. The parameters that affect this the most are:

    a) HSph Subdivs. This parameter probably has more effect on renders speed than anything else- it basically sets the amount of detail picked up in your final render- if you're having problems with moire patterns in distant textures or very small details are disappearing then set this parameter high- generally I use a maximum of 100 and a minimum of 25. 25 or less is enough for test renders and 50 usually enough for final renders. Very rarely I've pushed it up to 200 when particular textures are moireing really badly, e.g. dark brown bricks with white mortar.

    b) Min and Max rates under "Basic Parameters"- I usually leave the Max rate at 0 as anything less affects quality too much and in general a min rate of -3 represents a good compromise between speed and quality. Pushing the Min rate below -3 will start reducing the quality and above -3 will start noticably slowing your renders down. Nevertheless optimum min and max rate parameters are governed by the model, textures and the choice of secondary engine so it's worth experimenting with them (at least the min rate) once you've got to grips with VfSU.

    c) VfSU lights, Emitter and Transluscent materials- they slow renders down a LOT. There's no workaround, just keep their use to a minimum.

    d) Don't model double-faced glass in SU (or if you must, put one face on a separate layer which you can switch off when you render). VfSU takes forever to calculate the refracted light bouncing around inside double-faced glass- just one window can cause your render to take 10 times longer.

    Hope this helps,
    Jackson

EDIT: had to search about a bit to find it, but Nomeradona recently posted an excellent tips topic at the ASGvis forums which pretty much summed up most of the tricks for getting fast renders out of VfSU.

The only bit I'd really disagree with is that he advises avoiding QMC altogether; more than half of my professional work is interior daylit renders and the QMC engine is absolutely necessary for quality renders of this type IMO. It's not as much of a time hog as you might think- the original of this render was 1200 x 800px and it took about 30 minutes on my laptop (specs in signature below). Could probably render a similar model in less time, but there's a long black grille above the fridge which moired really badly so I had to push the HSph Subdivs up.Kitchen VRay 1.jpg

Also, if you applied a tga file, which SU supports, V-Ray will only render the diffuse colour because it doesn't support that format.

Never mind, after some more digging figured it out, must say I'm pretty impressed with the ease of use, most definitely will be buying after my 30 day demo.

this is what imean always at asgvis whe you are using vray. imho, if you are trying to use all these artificial lights (without sunglight)... do not use the camera yet. it will greatly confused use without really knowing how vray works.

you see in vray sun, is very bright, so you need to use your camera in order to balance the harsh lighting.

like what stinkie said, why not visit the main vray site. there are even basic tutorials there.

that black there is because of the camera). in order to correct it. 1. read the manual 2. if you are lazy to read the manual, then you either increase your light multiplier for your omni or rect lights or you have to adjust the camera exposure...

Sure! I'm glad I was able to help.

When I was talking to one of the tech's at V-Ray they said they were aware of the problem and are working on it. I think if more people let V-Ray know the faster the will fix it.

I use V-Ray all the time and feel it is the best rendering program available that works "inside" Sketchup. I know Maxwell is a great rendering program as well but it's nice not to have to export your model into another program. That's what makes V-Ray so nice for us. Until that last update by V-Ray it has worked great.

I hope you dont mind if i have a go at answering this, im a bit of an idigo fan myself.

Basiaclly it has most of the features youd find in maxwell, and a better interface with SU than maxwell. Materials setup is very simple in most cases, although ti still has the ability to do very compex things like SSS and displacement.

Whaat (the exporter developer) is also very active in developing new plugins to keep us up to date with the altest goings on.

And best of all it's free!

that is! go to asgvis.com and download some "options" and try to turn around the rectangular light, the scene looks good but add or try the rectangualr light. ๐Ÿ˜„

Note, you have to completely separate all the geometry, including hidden lines to a group or component in order for displacement to work. If there's some other geometry attached with a different material then displacement won't work.

Ok Be mindful of these tips.

Do not use QMC. QMC calculation is the most exact yet the slowest. When using IR engine (say-5, -3) calculate faster but be aware of light leaks. when using IR engine, set up at least one Vray rectangular light (invisible) beyond the camera with low multiplier. This will act in certain way as fill light but at the same time areas will smoothen your image. (see my WIP tutorial at asgvis on this). Edit: adjust also in order to prevent artifacts set the QMC adaptive sampler to 0.85. Use Light Catche as your 2nd engine. the Default 1000/ samples .02 size/ make it 600 and samples 5 for quick review (a bit blurry but quicker) for final use .02 size and higer samples . Be sure you tick the glossy box something. Now its always advisable to save your IR and LC and reload them. so if you rerender again your image, vray wont calculate those things anymore and it will go direct to rendering. Also saves on the memory used in the final render process...very advised for HiRes Under global switches, turn off default lights and hidden lights. Its better always to override sun's parameter. Image Sampler... Adaptive Subdivision is often quicker than Adaptive QMC (most of the time, but not always. Adaptive subdivision with -2,1 is very quick. Antialiasing off. jsut use it for final render. If you are using Adaptive subdivision of -2,1, antialaising on is still quick. NOW this is the culprit... QMC noise threshold.. the lower the noise threshold the longer render time.. use default for test. final is may .005-.007 Lighting. the more lights yo have the longer render time Blurry reflection renders longers. the higher subdivision the more longer time Shadows... more subdivision more smoother, but longer render time BUMPS are easier to use, takes shorter time to render than Displacement. jsut use displacement if necessary. For final render, re-start your computer. this clears up memory from all of the different programs that wind up running. Damien of sgvis suggested even, if you really want to save as much memory as possible, then go through the programs that are loaded at startup and remove the ones that are unnecessary. Alway purge your file. all thsoe extra files takes space of yur memory, Damien added explode as many components as possible. Nested components might cause issues, and components also take longer to work with when reading the scene from SU. (dont explode the faces you want to apply displacement, displacement wont occur) displacement will only occur on only on Group objects or faces) Dont use caustic. calculation of caustics takes longer Glazes. avoid using double glazing.. cause refraction will be calculated many times. (But if you use sometimes single glaze, refractions are not really correct) Translucent materials takes looooooooooooooooong time to render. turn off sketchup shadow, outliner and all those extra windows in Sketchup during render time. (outliner is a big culprit) Use track mouse during render time. (Only test an area that you are concerned about- dont overdo it) point your moude to the area you want to see first. it will definitely save time.

there are some more of course.. but i think 20 is enough.

Now again its render time against quality. If you want super quality image, it will really takes longer render time. ๐Ÿ˜ฎ
