You might find it quicker and easier to create a reference point in the Sketchup model? I find it quite difficult in layout to lock onto undefined points.

Are you moving the basic center snap on any object in LO? It really is a wonderful ability to set the insertion point of any object anywhere you like. Once I got the hang of this, moving and inserting objects and references in LO is really intuitive, easy and extremely accurate, even when zoomed out.

I just tried it on LayOut Mac, and it worked for me. Here's some things to verify:

The style with edges colored with something other must be saved (verify in styles inspector in SketchUp). Make sure you updated the model in LayOut: check File->Document Setup->References to be sure. Render the model in vector. I exported to DXF because it was easier to see my output (Google Docs renders DXF's - sorry, still setting up the office). It worked for me with my beautiful lime green edges.

an all purpose, all singing and dancing package like ArchiCAD?

archicad is pretty popular where i live, i think is also more widely used than revit..i can say in recent times 50% of my work is complete/fix/edit archicad models which they can't or are not good enough to finish in on their end, mostly for freeform stuff, furniture, vegetation, terrain.. i'm not pretty sure taht archicad is "all purpose" at all.. i would say it has HUGE limitations when it comes to freeform modeling.. or maybe that people here doesn't know how to use the software.. so that's good for me.. πŸ˜„
so while they are "singing and dancing" (and struggling with basic freeform modeling), i model 10 time faster than they do and with less limitation, maybe you are right for the documentation side.. i don't know, is not my job. but as a pure modeler i would say sketchup is WAY better than archicad.

btw the two software have a whole different approach so the comparison is quite unfair..

    Welcome Dylan!

You will love this site. Gai is spot on with a great visual. I'll reinforce the key to Layout happiness is managing your scenes in SU. Always update your Layout file with the actual scene from sketchup. If you render it as "modified (sketchup view name)", then you will not get the true updated scene you saved in Sketchup.

    Happy modeling!

All solved, thank you for your help. I'd coloured the background wrong in sketchup.

When i export to DWG in layout - i think i understand everything in the export window, but when i open it in autocad i am completly lost. Are there tutorials or tips in this dwg export issue in especific.
    Thanks in advance

What Gai said - if you export in raster, it exports a raster image. In ACAD make sure you check both paper and model space. If you exported to paper space (selection in Layout), then open ACAD in default model space, you will see nothing.

I bought a blue tooth full keyboard from MacAlly for when I'm at home. After he died, I wound up with the flat screen TV we gave my dad for Christmas in 2010 and I use it as an external monitor at home.

Sorry, I am too tired and did not even realize that we are in the LayOut forum.

You can import any png file or create your shapes in LO and distribute them according to your image (you can even add them to your custom scrapbooks) but you will need to rotate them individually in LO to follow that path.

No problem. I will use the standard dashes and arrow stroke settings.

    Cheers

Speed is what we need !!
LO is a great tool - but it`s way to slow.
More the once I had to work all night to get the job done - basically just waiting for LO to do what had to done.
So - give us speed , don't rob our sleep!! ❗

    Thanks!

It is not complicated at all. My layer setup is very simple:
The Section line work reference goes on a layer I name RCP linework (modify for type of drawing)
SU reference goes on a layer named SU Reference
The grids are on a layer called grids
The notation is all on one layer called notation.

You can add more as needed, but isolating these individual layers is what you see on the RCP above. You then position the layers in order of visibilty and lock as needed. I typically keep all reference layers locked and only unlock to update.

As for model scenes, they are just each section or plan view saved as a separate scene. For plans that require many sections, I will typically create a separate SU file and reference in the base model. This way you don't end up with 15 section planes in a given model.

So far so good on this method. Rendering time is pretty much instant for both the raster and vector linework. I have used this method now for all my plans, reflected ceiling plans and building sections. It works great!

Don't use "Last scene saved". Use the actual scene that you set up. The reason being, you may have just slightly rotated the scene out of orthagonal view. If so, you are seeing how it was last saved. That would reak havoc on your dimensions.

Thanks Tig, I've tried to save to C:, to Desktop, to a zip drive, plus trying the save as LO 1 and 2. Unfortunately the backup.layout is 20 minutes older than the main file, so while it is 'only' 20 minutes lost, it's still frustrating as, if it happens again, I'll know this'll be the outcome.

In the end I got the sheet as I wanted it and exported it to a nice .pdf (and a .dwg) and now I'm going to unplug it from life support

we need a smilie with a black armband for such occasions.

    cheers, nigel

    Charlie,

Interesting insight. I'll keep an eye out for that. It could be that my viewport situation was as you described, not completely orthogonal.
