I am having this very same problem with mirror_31.rb crashing my SU7. Everything was working properly and about 30 min into a model, SU started crashing every time I try mirroring something. After several crashes, I tried mirroing again with the Outliner window closed and everything worked fine! My guess is that after the model starts getting more complex SU can't handle updating the Outliner as efficiently in this case after using the mirror tool? Don't know if this applies to you Dik but it might be worth a check. Fefo

There is a more professional piece of software available called Lamina which is also designed to unfold geometry. It allows you to input the real thickness of the material being unfolded, and then it prepares a cutting sheet with numbers and even tabs if you want them. You can save the output as a DXF cutting path for use with laser or plasma cutters or a waterjet/waterknife. http://laminadesign.com/index.html It's pricy...$395, but it's aimed at fabricators and rapid prototyping shops. I bought a copy after learning that some sculptors were using it for preparing sheetmetal for assembly...it does a nice job making complexly curved surfaces developable (not that's a situation you often see with SketchUp models...with Rhino, it's inevitable).

Render looks much improved...glad I could help. It's funny, I had the same problem with the warehouse scene and I removed the glass as well. Normally I don't do many interior renders and if I do, I would probably not use Vue. I think removing the glass would only work if your reflective angle was such that it wouldn't be too obvious. If you have a lot of interior lighting and a darker atmosphere, I also don't think it would be wise to remove the glass as slight reflection would be important.

It should be a little thing just underneath the close x in the actions window. You can load the action from there.

Looks cool, but the problem with such real-time renderers is that they rely on reflection maps, and thus reflections only look good in curved surfaces. But it's still cool. If I only had a Mac...

I can only ditto this I'm afraid. I've run into the same problem and haven't found the solution yet either. I'll keep you posted if I find out anything as I'm going to be running into this problem again shortly with a brick texture. -brodie

Not easy at all. Each 3D layer contains a separate imported or manufactured set of 3D objects as a Scene. Between layers, you can share cameras ("custom views") and positions, but in other respects they exist in separate but visible spaces. Camera and positioning controls are extremely hard to manipulate, so it makes sense to import camera positions from the modeler (I use 3DS with SketchUp as an camera import mechanism.) There are several quite nice features, though. Although there is a "Render for final output" setting that can take time to calculate like any other renderer, most of the time you can simply go with "Best Anti-alias" settings for a 3D scene and at any moment (WYSIWYG) flatten it to a standard Photoshop bitmap file (and thus any bitmap format). Also, 3D layers can be converted to Photoshop Smart Objects or placed as such in another file, where you can apply standard Photoshop filters and adjustments to them. The image in my previous post actually applies several adjustments and smart filters to a smart object containing an imported OBJ file from SketchUp, to give it that odd and fairly unique rendering style. The light sources are also present within that particular 3D layer. But the mountains behind are from a 'shopped photo of the site for the project. The sky is actually a 3D object, too: a "3D Postcard" tilted to create the illusion of recession, also converted to a smart layer with smart filters. It is possible, if you import a textured file into PSCS4 XT, to edit the textures themselves as separate placed Photoshop files. Unfortunately, it seems that this is only really useful if you are extremely careful with setting up the UV mapping (texture positioning) before importing the model into PS. In the attached image, the graffiti on the stone was painted on the texture in Photoshop, and of course it appeared in 3D on the 3D layer using the texture. The background is a separate 3D layer of a mesa imported from Google Earth. [image: b1XX_monolith7j-kilroy-20081022.jpg]

@earthmover said: I was curious why you are exporting out of SU as an .obj. To avoid triangulation. @earthmover said: For the money, the nexus engine is pretty darn good. I'm not debating that, far from it - modo does offer a lot for it's price. But, I have the luxury of being able to choose between Maxwell and modo's renderer (and VfSU). Given the fact that I am mainly concerned with quality and rendering times aren't that much of an issue to me (I am not a pro, thus I haven't got any deadlines to meet), it would be illogical for me to use modo's engine. Back to learning how to unwrap UV's now.

Scott Schiller, the author of the tutorial mentioned above, sent me this: This is interesting stuff, I had no idea there was a Google Sketchup community etc. For animations and so on in JS, I might consider looking at some of the modern javascript libraries like Yahoo! User Interface, http://developer.yahoo.com/yui/ or JQuery, http://jquery.com/ which have useful animation components that allow you to easily create and run arbitrary tweened animations on various properties of HTML elements. I'm looking into his suggestions; if useful I will post some example videos. Chris
