So my question is.....does anyone (else) see this as a useful "option".

Yes, +1. For not saving the "direction" of section plane seems like a missed opportunity. Something they missed when deciding what to save per scene.
Setting up animations is going to be slightly different!

      Anyway, +1

....... The inner sphere forms first, then the outer, and I think I'm done, but every test I run after that indicates only a single (outer) sphere.

What am I doing wrong? ......

Dave's example shows that the larger circular face is missing prior to extuding the small face into a small sphere. (see shadows!)
He then creates (restores) the full large circular face to extrude into a large sphere.
If you secondly extrude the ring face in stead of a full circular face, then it "eats away" the smaller sphere, leaving only a large sphere.
It's as if the extruded ring creates a large sphere and a negative small sphere right where the first small sphere was before.

Extruding the ring face in one operation creates two concentric spheres, as Jeff mentioned.

      Hi Ken, thanks for sharing.

You may want to assign these two different options (On/Off) to just one shortcut key. To toggle the view 'Hide rest of model' On/Off. It's fast and available in all models.

Is this an ordinary display issue due to unsupported OpenGL?

Try menu Window > Preferences > OpenGL > disable 'Use hardware acceleration' and restart SketchUp to see if you model is visible as should.

The components browser lets you change properties to 'Glue to' etc. This is for instances not yet in the model. Existing 'In Model' unglued instances will not change their current unglued situation. Not that useful to you, I guess.
Try both next plugins. I'm not sure if ThomThom's plugin does that job to components in the model, but if I'm not mistaken, TIG's plugin changes unglued instances in use. I don't have them installed.

      @dmatho said:

... The Polygon Tool then works as it should, but that's not what's described in the Help/Knowledge Center...

I don't know what the help center says but the story is:
Either with the 'Circle' tool, the 'Polygon' tool or the 'Arc' tool, when first selecting the tool you see "sides" as the expected input at the 'Measurements' box.
Only at this time you can omit the s for sides. Right after the first click you'll need to include that s when you would like to change the number of sides used by these tools. You'll see radius (or length/bulge for arcs) but this is ignored due to adding the s. The order of entering radius and sides does not matter. The included s is important for SketchUp.
After drawing the entity you can still change your mind for both radius or sides.
With the arc you can still change bulge or radius (include r) and sides (include s) in any order.
After selecting anything else the story is over.

Anyway, as suggested, I'll make components out of them, that might be the simplest solution.

I can only say: check the latest autosave, made by SketchUp after you made the changes to the axes. They should be with all the changes made to the model. Components wouldn't make any difference at all here.
Also check the autosave time in Window > Preferences General: every ___ minutes. Maybe it's set to a (too) long time between autosaves.

....I have imported a DWG (with scale bar) in SKP and need to scale it as somewhere along the line things got a messed up.

Is there anyway a can scale to target (i think thats what its called)? Basically I want to click on a line in the imported DWG (say the scale bar) and then click on a line i have drawn in SKP that is its real world equivalent. That way I can be certain its the right scale......

Resizing with the 'Scale' tool to exact dimensions can be difficult. Dave's method is the way to go.
But note that if you import the DWG into an existing model with already existing geometry, then you ought to use this method inside the DWG's editing context(DWG in a group), to only resize this group. Otherwise the entire model will be resized, i.e DWG and existing geometry.

......That's the problem: I want to change the axes of a group, but after every auto save they jump back to the old alignment. Even while I'm drawing, within the group. The group axes - which are indeed different from the models axes - can be modified, but they don't stay that way.

Maybe it's the way I do it? I just open (edit) the group, click on the red-green-blue icon, choose a new origin and choose the direction of the red and green axes.

Even with groups I can't see the issue you described. Edited axes within a group (its local axes) do keep their new origin and orientations after saving and reloading. (PC!)
I can't figure out why it doesn't work for you.

This seems to be an (one of the) exception(s). To move 6"3.5mm does not work. I can't figure out why one dimension would be in two different units anyway. More that X is in one unit, Y in another (and Z in yet another). And you are right, this is also possible in SketchUp.

Example: you can scale a cube in 3 directions to accurate dimensions by applying 1m,10',12" [Enter]

    • RE: Standard Camera Views Not Realigning With New Drawing Axis

      @fcborik said:

...... , then is there some kind of work-around so I can get dead-on elevation projections without having to approximate with the orbit tool?....

As Dave explaned, you can right click on a face and select 'Align View'.

Another way to align any view you like, a general method, (and don't forget to save views, to return to at any time later) is as follows:
Redraw the axes in such a way that red runs to left, green up (and blue towards you) in a desired view. (see * below). Now right click on an axis in emplty space and select 'Align View' in the context menu. ---> now your view will be one with green pointing to the top of your screen, red to the right (and blue towards you, perpendicular to the screen). This is, as said, a general applicable method, independend of the presence of faces and their orientations.

()On an elevation this would be: red along the base of the facade, green to roof top (blue filled in by SketchUp).
      (
)On a floor plan this could be: red along one wall, green along another perpendicular wall (blue filled in by SketchUp).
(*) in general, red along the future view base of your view to be, green perpendicular in a sensible direction (two options) (blue filled in by SketchUp).

      @racksat said:

... Check it out and give me some feedback!...

      Nice model!
There are two lines (series of edges) that somehow appear to be profiles and that need to be fixed into (hidden) edges between face segments (so no thick profiles). They border the surfaces between flat highest floor level and curved surface towards the middle leveled bowl and further down, between this curved surface and the flat floor of the middle leveled bowl. (I hope the description is clear).

I (for fun) ran a series of cross section animation "tests",(see*) eyeballing.....to see if the surface is smooth in "all" directions. This is crucial! But so far I couldn't find any alarming irregularity. The surface seems smooth. Good modeling. But now, how to get this skate parc built in real life! Lots of success!

(*) Various scenes, each with its own active section cut.
Scene transition enabled, set at 30 seconds
No camera location saved per scene
One active seltion plane (plane invisible but cut visible) per scene.
"Section Cuts" with 4, in X direction saved red, in Y direction saved green.
These are just some settings that I found helpful. (personal matter)

You could also create a animation with a "rotating" section cut or section cuts whereever you like, just to check the smoothness and curvation of the surface.

      .....it doesn´t work, even i checked " glue " to any 😄

i thought it works to stick to object as group, when i use guide lines, but it doesn´t at .....

Well, the bolt component does glue to any face it is placed on when picking one from the components browser. Or when carefully copying one that is still glued to a face (pick an endpoint that is in the gluing plane when copying!)

You should create the bolt with its local blue axis as the center line of the bolt. The gluing plane is always the local Red/Green plane.

You can alter the existing components gluing plane to save you to redraw the bolt. Right click an appropriate bolt and select 'Change Axes' in the context menu. You'll now see the gluing plane as a blue cross in the Red/Green plane. Blue runs perpendicular to that cross and is currently NOT in the center line of the bolt.

      @stanbondinc said:

........I guess the trick is to know what SketchUp can't do! I spent a lot of time trying to find a way to make it work but I have found that the more the pain, the greater the lesson, so hopefully I will remember this.

Often the way you view your model is important with dimensioning.
Look at the back of your model. You can now dimension the height of the panel by using the two midpoints, one on the top edge and one on the bottom edge. The dimension should pop up in the back plane. End ths dimension and then pull it to the side.

      General approach

      1. if the components axes are in plane of the panel (as they are here:
Open component, save a scene with these axes included. close the component.
The new scene has the proper axes for dimensioning the entire panel from outside the components editing context.

      2. if the local axes were not according to the panel you could still open the component, then right click on a face in the desired plane for dimensioning and select "Align Axes" and finally save the view.
Once outside the component's editing context you have the appropriate axes with just one click on the scene. For all its dimensions.

Here is my solution - works prefect for me:

      1. Define new shortcuts:
F5 - parallel view. Pressing F5 twice will switch from parallel to perspective.
Alt+1 - top view (I also have defined Alt+2 for bottom, and so on up to Alt+6)
Z - zoom extents - it is defined as ctr+shift+e by default, but I use this function too often. So simpler Z works perfect.
      2. Now select your object among many in your model. Hit F5 for parallel view, then alt+1 for top view and finally Z for zooming on your selected object.

      Hope it helps.

smicha, using this method, the views are still intermittent, but I really like these shortcuts! Thanks! I will use these heavily!

They shouldn't be. The method described by smicha works if you apply the appropriate 'Zoom Extents'.
There are two different 'Zoom Extents'. One is the default Ctrl+Shift+Z or the icon.
The other 'Zoom Extents' is the one in the right click context menu. It is this one that you need to assign to a shortcut key.
It isn't displayed in the overalll shortcut list untill you have something selected.

So select something > then goto menu Window > Preferences > Shortcuts > assign 'Edit/item/Zoom Extents' to a key(-combination). Say you pick {Ctrl]+Z

With this shortcut key it always works.

      Method (being in Parallel Projection):
select something you want to focus on in top view > hit Top View > hit [Ctrl]+Z
