      the arcs are the same as before. it's just that you can now get a snap at an intersection while creating the arc.

      The arc tool hasn't changed at all, it still doen't snap to edges, only to endpoints (say A), intersections (say A)etc. To indicate that the arc ends on a (virtual) line from certer to A.
      The tool may indicate that you slide the cursor on an edge. But when zooming in, the resulting endpoint that the arc creates isn't on the edge that it is supposed to snap to. Unfortunately!

      right. we finally have a way to natively get a rotated snap point. ...

      Is it really that accurate? I can't get it to work. If I zoom in I can still see a new endpoint (second end of arc) not being on the edge inside a group I "rotated" to(=pulled the arc to).

      Simon, can't you find 'Sandbox' toolbar in menu View > Toolbars > check 'Sandbox'?

      For all I know you don't have to download any sandbox plugin. It's there right from when you install SketchUp.

      1. turn off 'View Hidden Geometry'
      2. turn to 'Wireframe'
      3. select ALL by dragging the selection box (left to right or right to left)
        ....

      This is all you need to do as far as selecting is concerned. (You have too many steps)
      In 'Entity Info' you'll see only edges selected.
      The boxes soft, smooth and hidden may be checked but greyed out due to the variety of edge's properties. Just uncheck all these three options.

      Edit. your 1) should now be 1) turn ON 'View Hidden Geometry'
      So there are only the three steps with this change in step 1)

    • RE: Hidden geometry affecting scenes

      @chadgould said:

      ....Is there some trick to getting elements to be hidden only in the second scene or in a scene dependent manner?...

      @dave r said:

      You should be using layers to manage visible and invisible entities between scenes.

      As mentioned by Dave and other previous posters, use layers.
      Why not just update scenes? Because hide is not "sticky" throughout scenes, i.e. will not be remembered properly throughout scenes when this hiding concerns geometry inside groups and components. Only the top level geometry will still be hidden.

      Structure your model with (nested) groups and (nested) components and entirely controle visibility in scenes with properly chosen layer sets. Try to avoid "hide", unless for basic geometry.
      Better yet, use hide for temporary things when working on your model, like temporary getting a face or group out of your way to get to geometry in the back.

    • RE: Cannot reset file association after SU 2013 install

      @mgfranz said:

      There is only one icon, 2013.

      mgfranz, your issue seems to be that you try to open a file that was last saved in SU2013 now in SketchuP8

      Open SketchUp2013 > open that file > in menu File > Save as.... (see options down in dialog box) select 'As SketchUp 8 version or lower.
      Now close SketchUp 2013 and open SketchUp 8, search for that last saved file and it will open.
      As TIG mentioned above, the last opened SketchUp version will be the one that lets you open skp files by double clicking on them. But provided that they were saved to the proper SketchUp version.

      edit
      ps. There's a different icon on screen for each version of SketchUp.
      Each version can start and open skp files of same or lower versions.
      Double clicking on an skp file triggers the last opened program version but does nothing to how the file was saved. So you need to remember if it will match the program version that you are opening.
      By default each time you save a file, it will be saved in the program's version. You need to "force" saving downwards with 'Save as.... (options) each and every time you save a file.

      See image above)

      Thanks Cotty, that is exactly what I ment. I didn't have the right transparent png at hand. The texture can be resized to show any grid one needs, even X and Y independently 👍

      Jim, if you are going to follow Box's suggestion I would advice you to go for limited construction lines, (limited in length) made by a plugin, written by Jim Foltz.
      See his blog and look for 'Construction Line Tool':
      http://sketchuptips.blogspot.nl/p/my-plugins.html

      Thing is that with a few (not even that much, really) infinite guides in your model you might get lost in modeling space when orbiting. Even 'Zoom Extent' would not bring your model back until you delete all infinite guides.

    • RE: Numbered grid

      I don't know this plugin. But I guess that it may add a lot of extra entities that SketchUp will snap to. Is this something you strictly need. It can be a nuisance to not being able to navigate normally through your geometry. And it can add a lot to file size.
      What if you apply a transparent png with black lines in the texture, spaced 1cm appart.
      You could even resize the line grid to whatever you want and it would only be four edges (hidden!?!) and a grid-showing face. Just a suggestion.

      @mikedd said:

      Thats works Thank you

      The 'Hide' does make planes invisible one by one.
      Also when switching between scenes, hide unfortunately isn't consistantly saved like other features/options/properties when the hidden parts (here = section plane) are inside (nested) grouped environment. So you may still have to toggle the icon off. This toggles all planes off and this setting can be saved per scene. See the 'Scene Manager'.

      ...... How do I remove to orange lines?

      In 'Section' toolset toggle the icon 'Display Section Planes' off and leave 'Display Section Cuts on!. This will make the planes and orange boundaries invisible.
      Then try exporting again to see what results you get.

      @sundad said:

      ....I like using guidlines, but it seems like it would be better in this case to use "guideplanes". Is there such a thing in SU? ....

      Guide planes aren't mentioned as such in SketchUp. But any face in SketchUp could be considered and used as a guide plane.
      Example: with the 'Line' tool start drawing a new edge on just some face, (doesn't matter where you start, on edge or corner or on the face itself), hover over that face till you see 'On Face' popping up. Now press and hold down [Shift], to constrain to the plane of that face. Anywhere you go with the tool to finish the edge with the second endpoint will be in the plane of the face. Even at some location outside the face's boudaries. This can be useful when creating complex roof shapes.

      As suggested, upload the file with what you already have and explain where you want to go as for the roof shape.

      @dave r said:

      ........ If you are able to select the face inside without selecting the outside, you've solved it. ....

      In menu View > check 'Hidden Geometry' to be certain that the window loop (its outer four edges) does not have any hidden line connections (due to importing the CAD file) with the surrounding geometry. They don't affect the Push/Pull tool but you say that you are dragging the entire wall (side?) with the window. So this sounds strange with applying the P/P tool. It's more of an indication that opposite faces may not be completely parallel

      If you've set up an interesting SketchUp "exchange" I might consider to come, (straight distance 111km)

      It will take you some time to put up an interesting agenda and location and a lot of interaction with people who would want to come, and to see what is wanted/needed. (You'll likely hear beer mentioned as an important ingredient;-)

      Keep the ball roling.

      But even when running 2013 you do "need to" update from time to time (maintenance releases with minor fixes). Check which version of 2013 you have and compare that to the latest.

    • RE: Sketchup Free/Pro Question

      @krisidious said:

      Yeah...Trimble decided to screw everyone that uses the free version.

      I don’t think SketchUp/Trimble (decided to) screw any of the free users. IMO they were most generous when bringing out a new free version. (The 8 hours trial period at startup is awkward and hard to understand, but the program is still available and free) And you can still save as …. version 3.
      Plus some free versions have no commercial restrictions.

      Don’t forget that this all has to do with bringing out a new version under different conditions (different ownership).
      Google “screwed things up” (not badly meant but meaning: created the strange situation) by giving a free version away in return of free 3D buildings. Now that they moved on to a new “populating the world” system, SketchUp became more or less useless to them. (I felt it already in September 2011 when being in MountainView, and even mentioned it then to some people, that SketchUp felt like an outcast on the summit held then and there. Only to hear (without any surprise) that SketchUp was sold a few months later. It was just a matter of time).
      Google could afford to have a free version that paid itself by other means. The SketchUp developers team can’t work for free. And Trimble can’t ask (like Google did) to join in and return anything to balance the costs.
      Trimble and the SketchUp team are just having a hard time to get themselves out of an awkward “free program” situation created by the previous owner. Till now they have been generous with the free version.

      p.s. I didn’t give you a –1 or -2 although, as you see, I do disagree with you.

      @shpox said:

      Hi guys. The way sketchup handles normals by default has been causing some hassles for me. .......

      When talking about normals, are you referring to normals created by Ruby or are you talking plain SketchUp language? I really can't see what the problem is.
      SketchUp draws its new separate rectangles following strict "rules" for each orientation.
      Each face will have its front face and thus also its back face produced predictable in the modeling space. Normals like in your example are just a matter of where you begin drawing, the input value etc. This is all plain SketchUp so can you elaborate or tell me that I'm completele missing the point and that this is about Ruby language?
