No, it can't be done -- it's not supported yet. I have it from the horse's mouth.

Layout - Insert Animations?
I can play SU animations back in LayOut -- slowly.
Doesn't strike anyone as odd that you can't embed .movs / .avis in a LayOut document?

Dynamic Components, Interaction and Animation Output
DCs can be set to have animated behaviours, but these need to be triggered using the 'Interact' tool, i.e, in real time.
Does anybody know if these animated behaviours can be built into a rendered-out animation? Doors opening as you walk through them, for instance?

Ermmm....
Starting at 1:09, is that a component cutting a wall with thickness, or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

RE: Texture/ Lightmap Baking...

I'll have to look at XNormal more closely...interesting. Although their website is a train wreck.
PP -- It looks like LightUp will do what I want...I've been in touch with Adam...it needs to calculate the lighting first, but it's real-time after that.
But my question was about doing it with SketchUp's own shadows, to speed up animations. The pre-calculation should be faster. It seems like such an obvious feature. However, if LightUp can deliver the goods with animation...

Hi Tim, long time no see! Where have you been?
Gaieus -- I've been translating a book on Adrian Frutiger's Typefaces (from German into English...zzzzzz). Seriously, it's taken up the last six months. And i'm still proofreading...
pp -- I think LightUp is more of real-time, semi-photoreal solution , but it looks like Podium can do this photorealistically. That's cool.

RE: Texture/ Lightmap Baking...
Simple. Could a Ruby script be written that would automate the shadow map baking on a material-by-material basis?

"On plan" or "In Plan" -- what would you say?
I'm helping with translating a book at the moment (that's why I've been so quiet...)
I've put in a sentence; "A dolmen is a burial chamber, right-angled or polygonal on plan"
The editor wants it changed to "in plan"
What would you say? And please indicate if you're a British English (BE) or American English (AE) speaker.
Ta muchly.

RE: Advice on which renderer to use
There's a new renderer coming out from IDX Design - Renditioner. This integrates directly into SU -- it's not a separate app. Interestingly The Mac version will be released first -- although when that would be, I've no idea: 'Soon' is what they say.
I get the impression that it's what TurboSketch should have been all along (it's from the same people).

RE: SketchUp as a Front-end to CAM
Thanks, Alpro, but if you re-read my original post, you'll see I already have a program that will do this...Cheetah3D.
I just wanted to know if other people have done this two-stage export process, if there are any pitfalls, or if there was a more direct method -- like didier's stl export ruby. Sorry, I should have been clearer in my OP.

RE: SketchUp as a Front-end to CAM
Thanks, Charlie. Stl export ruby could be promising...
We'd considered 3D printing...but I've tried 3D printing in the past...hmmm...

RE: SketchUp as a Front-end to CAM
Which is the process I've already outlined above -- sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I need to get some tips on file formats & transfer. I don't want to have to do the modelling in AutoCAD.

SketchUp as a Front-end to CAM
Hmm -- anyone done this?
I may have a job as part of a team building a physical model of the Burj-al-Arab for display in a company's lobby.
We were discussing using SU to model the thing floor-by-floor, and using a computer-controlled lathe to machine each floor out of MDF, or suchlike, then adding detail by hand.
Has anyone used this approach? I think we'd need .stl files to feed to a CAM lathe/router, but SU doesn't support this format. We'd have to output it to another program that does, like Cheetah.
Anyone gone down this route, got any tips/advice, etc?
