It is possible - but you have a more specific description? Just offsetting? Rotating? By how much?
Hi Thomthom,
Just offsetting will do. I just want to offset the texture so that it doesnt look so repetetive.

Hi
Is there such a plug in for this scenario:
Ive modelled some decking (multiple pieces of timber) and I have textured them all with the same texture. Problem is, the texture looks the same on all of them. Is there such a plug in that can randomly move the texture around instead of me doing it manually?? Ie right click, texture -> position and then move the texture in a different position on various items.
Hope im making sense.
Thanks

That's... that's a bathroom?
Wow!
Yeah, I also think a rug would be nice.
Dont know what it is really... just a room with some washing facilities and pool (oh and TV too
heres a close up of the sinks (no post processing, raw from SU and Vray)

Something in the foreground to create depth and I can't quite read the glass panel, does it drop into the pool or what?
Hi Roger
Yes they are 2 glass door panels on either side. They are single face glass panels. They were initially double sided panels however the glass didnt look as nice (am using the default glass material from asgvis - vray setting). Any suggestions on this?
I agree, I couldnt think of an item to put in the foreground, any suggestions?
WHOA this is unbelievable!!!!
Any tutorials on this guys? So is that just 1 plug in that does all this??
LOVE IT!
Hi gang
Ive really only done some exterior renders and thought id try and whip up an internal render for fun.
This is a dream apartment I would love to build one day, an internal pool leading outside on a roof top apartment overlooking a city (this particular city is New York).
I initially tried a HDRI sky background and wanted to place the New York skyline in photoshop, except when i saved the render as PNG, you can still see the HDRI sky behind the glass if that makes sense. SO I had to do a billboard and used a HDRI in the skylight (I used an evening HDRI).
This is also the first time ive played with IES lights, so much fun but as you can see, way too bright. Will have to work on that one.
Please let me know what you think and provide some feedback on how to improve....
Hi all
Me again - would like some critique/suggestions on my renders. Still no where near as good as I want to get them but im working on it.
Currently using V-Ray and Sketchup with some basic photoshop touch ups (colour, lens correction , lens flare etc)
My main issue now is getting the concrete/drivey looking real. I have the grass down right thanks to MISCHAs tutorial (using the horizontal repeat - although im still not sure how this pic was created and stitched together in PS. I simply downloaded the grass image and done the horizontal repeat). Would anyone have anything similiar for the concrete or driveway?
ALso struggling with the garage material, all i simply did was did a standard diffuse colour with slight reflection... pretty plain and boring... struggling there!! Any suggestions?
Are there any photoshop tutorials out there for external renders for houses?
Also, Is the process of exporting the SU model to 3DS and using Vray as a renderer easy? Anyone know of a tutorial out there? Are the results better? Ive seen some wicked work out there done in 3DS.
looking forward to your responses
Hi
With all my jobs, Ive had to model houses on a flat ground. They are pretty easy for me now. HOWEVER, the latest job i have requires me to model on uneven ground (See attached).
How would I achieve this? using sandbox? im not too sure how to use that, if thats the way to go then are there any tutorials you can point me towards?
In regards to the work flow, should i model the house first and then do the ground or the other way around?
Thanks in advance
Hi
Ive created a simple internal scene of a living room and downloaded a couch model from 3dwarehouse. This model was 9mb in size, however when I imported it - it considerably slowed down my scene. Also, when usin Vray to render, it takes around 5 minutes or so for teh render screen to appear. Is this just how it is or can i work around this?
Also, I have just purchased a new PC and its quiet high end, is there any way of optimising the use of my graphics card (1gig Nvidia card) and 12mb of ram?
Thanks in advance.
Using SU 7.1 (and also 8 at times)

Not too bad. I think the sky is a bit too distracting for the viewer. The color and saturation also needs a bit of adjustment to add more realism. I had a quick play in photoshop to show what I mean. I replaced the sky and just adjusted a few settings. (Hope you don't mind)
I think overall you are getting a good starting point and there a lot of great things about the renders. Keep up the good work!
thanks heaps (i love this forum)
Was that all you adjusted in terms of the actual render (colour and saturation)? What exactly was done if you dont mind me asking?
The sky Im using is a HDRI cheapie i purchased off the net for $12, perhaps i need to upgrade.
Im using a HDRI background for the sky and im using the SU natural light for the GI. Would it be better to just place the sky in photoshop at post processing stage?
p.s that looks great and it made such a big difference, thanks again!!!!
Hi
Kinda getting the hang of this, just struggling with some 'realism' - comments/suggestions are welcome
Hi
I want to apply an evening sky HDRI to both the background and GI Skylight. Everytime i do this it doesnt cast shadows (not much anyways). Is it possible to do this and have the nomral amount of shadows you see within sketchup??
If so, how do i do this?
Thanks

Try setting the image transparency to 98%...sure helps my tree png's.
Thanks to you both.
Tom - im at work so I dont have access to my programs. By transparancy do you mean adjusting it within the transparancy option thats next to the diffuse option within the materials editor in Vray? ie sliding it from white into the black by 2%?
Hi
PLs see below render, everytime i render the trees (using the method of adding the alpha image in transperancy) I seem to be getting a weird 'white edging' effect around the trees. Particulary the tree on the far left and on the far right near the garage door. Is there a way to eliminate this within sketchup/vray?
Using Sketchup 7.1 and Vray 1.05.30
Thanks

Actually, there is something we should have done first which is to outline the house and do the routine with changing the levels on the whole house before even touching the windows. We need some light on the building to even make it seeable before even starting on the details.
Hi Roger - here it is.... adjusted the levels along with the colour balance (midtones)
Thanks again

Thansk Roger much appreciated!
I reworked the render a little and amended it somewhat adding more lighting. TOnight when I get home I will do as you said and use photoshop to edit the lighting. That sounds interesting!
In teh meantime, pls see the updated render (no photoshop)

This is just to give you some ideas. It is all done in post production and is a bit sloppy as I was in a hurry. Photography, even virtual photography is more about composition and lighting than the subject itself.
WOW Roger that looks 100% better!!! I need to develop my photoshop skills... any idea where i can learn to do something like that?? Im not too bad at photoshop but I havent yet learnt to do something like that!
thanks very much!

When you use the Sun/Sky system as light source you will get clear shadows. (you can soften by increasing the sun's Size)
But when you use HDRI as light source you have no control over the shadows.
You can use HDRI as background and Sun/Sky as light source - but you might very well end up with lighting that doesn't fit with your background.
Thanks...what about how to add the vegetation? Any idea where id find information or tutorial on how to do this?
Thanks again

GRASS - Tried the make fur plug in and when i render, nothing comes out. The extruded grass isnt showing, just a flat plane if that makes sense. ANy idea on what im doing wrong?? Ive seen soem results of others and its amazing!
Also, can you do the grass in photoshop? any tutorials worth mentioning out there?I'm guessing you are using an older VfSU version. (you never mentioned) Which on occasions will not render some objects due to an SU bug. (Though it should come back when you reload the model)
In any case, I don't recommend modelling grass - it just makes the models incredible large and increase render times to the insane. It is also hard to get the material looking right. Ditto for using displacement - which never looks good.
Instead, the quick, easy and realistic way is to photoshop the grass into the image afterwards. That often applies to most vegetation.@unknownuser said:
COncrete - Still struggling to get some good, realistic concrete. I believe I have the right textures, just not sure if im doing it right. I usually edit them in the materials studio and then bring them into SU and modfiy the scaling/ratio of the texture.
The driveway looks to flat and uniform. Have a look at cgtextures.com and look in their Road section. That site is a very good resources, even had lots of ready made tiled textures now as well.

SHADOWS - when i render, why cant i see the shadows? there seems to be just a bit but not much at all. Also, the trees arent casting any shadows, how can I do this using images/alpha maps?
You're using HDRI as light source, aren't you? The amount of shadows you get will vary a lot from HDRI to HDRI - often HDRI's have the Sun blocked partially or fully behind a cloud, which makes soft shadows.
Thanks ThomThom. Ill look into this grass issue. Ill reload it and see it it makes a difference.
Is there a tutorial on the net somewhere where itll show me how to add vegetation to a scene? I have looked and looked and without any luck!!
Yeah im using the HDRI as both the light source (IBL) and background, is this the right way of going about this? should i just load the HDRI as the background so that i can see more shadows in my render? Which setting in vray amplifies shadows anyways? Its weird coz soemtimes shadows are there and sometimes not.
Thankds for the reply
Hi guys
This is one of my first few renders. I know its no where near most of the standards around here but im trying my best for now
Using Sketchup 7 and Vray
Couple of things im struggling with which Id love some pointers:
GRASS - Tried the make fur plug in and when i render, nothing comes out. The extruded grass isnt showing, just a flat plane if that makes sense. ANy idea on what im doing wrong?? Ive seen soem results of others and its amazing!
Also, can you do the grass in photoshop? any tutorials worth mentioning out there?
COncrete - Still struggling to get some good, realistic concrete. I believe I have the right textures, just not sure if im doing it right. I usually edit them in the materials studio and then bring them into SU and modfiy the scaling/ratio of the texture.
Trees - still struggling to get some convincing trees. Im basically using images with alpha maps.
SHADOWS - when i render, why cant i see the shadows? there seems to be just a bit but not much at all. Also, the trees arent casting any shadows, how can I do this using images/alpha maps?
Your comments, thoughts and assistance are all welcome, looking forward to some responses.
