My render - your opinion?
-
Hi guys
This is one of my first few renders. I know its no where near most of the standards around here but im trying my best for now
Using Sketchup 7 and Vray
Couple of things im struggling with which Id love some pointers:
GRASS - Tried the make fur plug in and when i render, nothing comes out. The extruded grass isnt showing, just a flat plane if that makes sense. ANy idea on what im doing wrong?? Ive seen soem results of others and its amazing!
Also, can you do the grass in photoshop? any tutorials worth mentioning out there?COncrete - Still struggling to get some good, realistic concrete. I believe I have the right textures, just not sure if im doing it right. I usually edit them in the materials studio and then bring them into SU and modfiy the scaling/ratio of the texture.
Trees - still struggling to get some convincing trees. Im basically using images with alpha maps.
SHADOWS - when i render, why cant i see the shadows? there seems to be just a bit but not much at all. Also, the trees arent casting any shadows, how can I do this using images/alpha maps?
Your comments, thoughts and assistance are all welcome, looking forward to some responses.

In any case, I don't recommend modelling grass - it just makes the models incredible large and increase render times to the insane. It is also hard to get the material looking right. Ditto for using displacement - which never looks good.
Instead, the quick, easy and realistic way is to photoshop the grass into the image afterwards. That often applies to most vegetation.@unknownuser said:

The driveway looks to flat and uniform. Have a look at cgtextures.com and look in their Road section. That site is a very good resources, even had lots of ready made tiled textures now as well.

You're using HDRI as light source, aren't you? The amount of shadows you get will vary a lot from HDRI to HDRI - often HDRI's have the Sun blocked partially or fully behind a cloud, which makes soft shadows.

Thanks ThomThom. Ill look into this grass issue. Ill reload it and see it it makes a difference.
Is there a tutorial on the net somewhere where itll show me how to add vegetation to a scene? I have looked and looked and without any luck!!
Yeah im using the HDRI as both the light source (IBL) and background, is this the right way of going about this? should i just load the HDRI as the background so that i can see more shadows in my render? Which setting in vray amplifies shadows anyways? Its weird coz soemtimes shadows are there and sometimes not.Thankds for the reply

When you use the Sun/Sky system as light source you will get clear shadows. (you can soften by increasing the sun's Size)
But when you use HDRI as light source you have no control over the shadows.
You can use HDRI as background and Sun/Sky as light source - but you might very well end up with lighting that doesn't fit with your background. -
