Take a look at this thread.

Good place to start. Everyone seems to have their own way of doing it.
You can also use Inkscape to convert PDF to a DXF file which you can import and work on directly

RE: Creating Model From Flat Plan Drawing

RE: Grid
If you're having trouble keeping track of where the axes are, trying setting the cursor to show coloured croshairs that relate to the axes. I now use it all the time, go to Windows > Preferences > Drawing > Display Crosshairs

RE: MY digital painting journey
Fantastic. Thanks for showing the workflow too. Have you tried Krita? Has some nice features, although with your talent you really don't need much.

RE: Floors and Walls suddenly separated
It would seem that you have moved one part of the floor so that it is not on the same flat plane (co-planar) as the rest of the lines joined to it. That is why it has broken into triangles and is what known as the auto fold feature of sketchup. If you draw a rectangle and move one corner up or down the shape will break into triangle because it is no longer flat. You would be better to make the floor and the walls as seperate groups or components to protect them from accidentally being altered as you work. This is a good way to work generally. You could try hitting 'undo' several times to get back to how the model was before, but there is no way of knowing how far back thi change occured. You may be better to delete the floor first. If you do that then select everything in the model and make it a group, then re draw the floor and make that a seperate group. Then you can ungroup the rest of the model so you can work on it. When something is made a group or component, lines you draw on it won't stick to it if you move the group, they are treated as seperate entities. I suggest you start working this way and not make everything out of all connected geometry. It looks like its just the wall and floor that were connected so you may be able to salvage the walls, Try hiding everything but the walls and then use the orthagonal views with wireframe set, to inspect the lines that make up the walls to see if any are out of line with each other. Does that make sense? Or it may be quicker to redraw the walls and then make them a group.

RE: Overwhelmed beginner with questions
You can also use the scale tool to change your rectangles. If you select the whole rectangle and then invoke the scale tool, you can pick which handles you need(the handles are the little squares that appear) type in the overall dimension you want for that side, then type in the units after the number and hit enter. If you don't type in the units after the number it will be scaled by a ratio and not a dimension. I work in metric so I would type something like "340mm" , if I typed "340" it would scale by a factor of x340.
Also for inferencing, when you want to move something you can lock it to move on a particular axis by pressing one of the arrow keys after selecting the object with the move tool. Or if you start it moving on an axis hold the shift key and it will be locked to that axis. The inference engine can be finicky to get used to but it is one of the most powerful aspects of SU tht make it so fast and easy to use. It helps if you orientate your view so it would be more likely to move on a given axis.
Download the user guide from the SU website, even if its an older PDF version it is still mostly relevant. Be patient and try some tutorials and search this forum, someone else has usually already asked the same questions that you are likely to. Good luck and persevere, its worth it. -
RE: Dream Home Final Images
Wow! Thats one big project.Fantastic space. Reminds me of a James Bond set. How long did it take you?

RE: A few renders.(updated)
Fabulous. I love the beach house. Is the haze an effect in Thea or or just due to no post pro?

RE: Animations
Thanks for that explaination, no it wasn't long winded but just enough to give me the idea. I want to start using more techniques for presentation and for our web site and I think what you have done is worth a try when I've got a bit of time....or maybe I should make time.

RE: Animations
These are both great. Whats your workflow for the second on and how do they go down with the clients?

RE: MasteRBedroom
Very very nice. The wood is lovely. BTW KrisM is talking about the overlaps/staggering of the end joints, they are normally more evenly spread for stability.

RE: LOW POLY GALLERY
Nice one. Great example and reminder of the power of UV mapping, probably something that doesn't get done enough in Sketchup. Although I'm not sure at what point it would become more efficient on memory to use it in an "average" size static model?

RE: Wacom Pen in SketchUp?
I have had the same problem with 'mouse ache' in the shoulder and have tried a cheap pen and tablet in conjunction with a Razer Nostromo gaming pad for shortcuts on the left hand. The Razer speeds things up a lot but the problem is quick zoom and orbit when using the pen. Ended up re assigning the buttons on the razer for zoom and orbit and fitting a sturdy tray under the desk to get arms at right height.
Has anyone used the touch capability on the Wacom to rotate and zoom? Would it work on SU?
Also looked at vertical mouse but thought might not be as easy to make small movements for accuracy. Anyone tried that? -
RE: 3D Warehouse Problems
Sounds good, I will try it tomorrow when back at work. Thanks

RE: 3D Warehouse Problems
I have just started getting a similar problem. Sometimes the warehouse cannot connect through SU but will work straight from a web browser. I am on Windows 7 64bit with SU Pro 2014, any help would be good.
Thanks -
RE: Castle Gate Scene
Great job on the modelling and composition. I like it a lot just as a picture. Maybe you could do a version with slighlty lees watercolour effect so more detail comes through.

RE: Vertex points
Not sure what you mean. Can you post a screen shot?
-
RE: The Golden Age Of Steam
Excellent, and well composed. Did you model the engine too?
-
RE: Cant find my edges, lines after use round corners
Did you actually unsoften the edges or just unhide them?

RE: Navigation Options
I've also struggled with this in the past but as Dave says using layers is a major help. I design kitchens so the wall are always 'in the way' but you need them for reference. I now set up scenes with different layers turned off for placing mouldings etc. such as a birds eye view with the ceiling layer turned off.
I also use Profile Builder(Pro version) a lot as you can lock the the axes/direction as you place runs of moulding- easier than drawing lines and using follow me tool
