    • RE: [Plugin] 1001bit Tools - Architectural tools for SketchUp

I tried to register at 1001bit forums and got this message in red saying my IP address was blacklisted as a spammer (I have definitely NOT spammed anyone). Anyone else had this problem? Also I would like to know if this would be a problem for me when it comes to activating the product? I want buy it now. I understand the company is in the far east so I don't expect a response from them just yet. Can I just buy 1001bit without registering to the forums or would my email given during activation be treated in a separate way?

BTW, this set looks really good! I'm shocked I have not heard of this plugin until I stumbled on it while shopping for plugins yesterday. I'm so late to this community.

Instead of using clipping, you need to apply a mask in the layer weight slot.

You should be able to use the technique shown here to achieve what you want.

Thank you so much Hieru! That tutorial did wonders for my understanding.

    • Thea Render Material Lab Help

I am still playing around with the demo and cannot figure out how to make a material with multiple layers like we can in Kerkythea. I wanted to post this question in the Thea forums but I think I'm limited until I become a licensed user.

Aside from doing cg works I do murals and wall finishes. I been using Sketchup and Kerky to make visuals of what the walls will look like for the clients. My latest project is to do a wall with a metallic finish with metallic rag rolling in squares to give a modern look. I made alpha masks of the rag roll patterns to be layered on top of a metallic background. I figured out how to do it in Kerkythea but I am lost trying it in Thea.

This is a kerkythea render of what I'm trying to get in Thea. The material for the wall has 3 layers. One for the background, one for the corner rag roll boxes, and one for the center rag roll box. The rag roll layers are alpha masks. (please excuse the lighting...not the best just a test)
      Purpleweb.jpg

When I tried this in Thea, I got one of the rag roll patterns on the wall but it clipped everything else making the base wall transparent. Can Thea perform the deep layered material stuff like Kerkythea? I can't imagine it not being able to do so and more being a retail product.

I truly wish someone would make some workflow tutorials for Thea's material lab. I'm sure what I'm trying is not hard but not knowing where to dig makes the learning process longer than it need to be. The manual explains the areas of the interface but not any process on how to work with them. I wonder if all the treasure is in that mysterious licensed user forum area? I just want to make sure I can use Thea right away to do what I want once I make the purchase and not have it sitting on my hard drive for 6 months before I finally get it. Any help is appreciated.

      @solo said:

Once you register Thea after purchase you can download some Xfrog trees in the licensed user section, there will be more added as they are optimised for Thea. The next version of Thea is 1,2 probably coming out next month, free upgrade to all registered users so buying now will make sense.

How do you plan to use Terragen2? with Vue?

Thanks for the info on Thea. I was just holding out in case they had an upcoming sale. Was wondering if historically the cg community had these conditions every year.

I actually did some research and chose Terragen over Vue after reading some comparison reviews. Traditionally I been painting landscapes for many years so having a 3D landscape generator makes sense for me to have. I would like to use Terragen to make back drops, and even use generated terrain meshes to import into blender or even Sketchup. I downloaded the demo already and the only issue I'm having so far is the lack of good tutorials and info to learn the thing quickly. I would like the license version to use professionally and break out of the 800x600 maximum res. As far as xfrog goes, aside from the libraries I can get to use in Thea, I would like to have the tree generator itself so I can make my own trees. So far I been using the free Tree[d] program but xfrog look so much better. Im still feeling my way around the cg community and getting an idea of what tools will be great for me to have in my workflow. So far I got plenty of modeling tools, now I am focusing on Thea and anything that enhances the environments for my projects.

    • Holiday Sales?

Hello everyone. This is the first holiday season I am ready to make some purchases to enhance my CG experience. I would hate to make a $300.00 purchase today just to find out its on sale tomorrow. Are there usually sales around this time of year on various things such as render programs, plugins, etc.? I am definitely buying Thea and would like to get xfrog, and Terragen 2 one day but can't help but wonder if I should wait a little while or am I wasting time? As I said this is my first shopping spree for CG related items. Any suggestions is appreciated.

    • RE: Design, Standard Heights and Dimensions References

An architect friend of mine was nice enough to put in my hands a hard copy of "Architecture Graphic Standards" tenth edition by Wiley & Sons, Inc. It's as big as a phone book. It covers many things from human dimensions to any structural design you would probably think of.

All this knowledge changed my perception of the world around me and my approach to being an artist. I believe integrity is in the design which is the foundation of the structure. Visualizers and Architects have a more important role in civilization than are given credit for. Or I should say the real ones who have a true love for what they do. Aside from structures being beautiful, there is safety and environmental dynamics to consider for longevity.

Also I would add that aesthetics somehow is not just superficial. It can be found in nature within and all around us. I believe studying patterns in natural structure can be key in good design, not only for beauty but maybe we can better understand how we can build in harmony as we better understand how things are formed natrually. I think the study of natural patterns is pertinent to good structural design. Here is a cool site I found on that subject: http://richworks.in/2011/02/patterns-in-nature-an-enigmatic-inspiration/

    • Lag when Posting from Phone

Hello. I noticed since the new site was launched that when I type to post from my Android phone, there is serious lag after the first sentence. If I type 5 words they don't show up right away and I have to wait 3-5 seconds before the words appear. Even when trying to erase to correct a word is a pain as the same thing happens. Hit the back button to erase a word and wait to see if I hit the back button enough or too many times. I tested to see if it happens on other forums to make sure it's not a problem with my phone and find it only happens here. Is anyone else experiencing or are aware of this? Will there be an Android version for this site?

    • RE: Rendering & animation - what to use?

Though it may not be the best for animation (so I've heard) you can try Kerkythea. It's an excellent free render program with animation features (you can render way beyond the 800x600 limitation too). I use Kerkythea all the time but I never tried an animation yet so cannot say good or bad for your needs.

    • RE: Since I Purchased Artisan....(plugin overkill?)

Thanks for the answer Chris. I ended up doing some system cleaning after experiencing 2 full system shutdowns while rendering in KT. I think my cpu overheated. Not sure though because I been rendering much bigger scenes over the past year without any problems. The other things I suspect are the power supply or a bad memory stick. My system is 4 years old now.
      Intel Core Quad CPU
      Q6600 @ 2.40Ghz 2.39Ghz.
      3.25Gb of RAM
      Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT 512mb.
      Windows XP pro with SP2

I did a search around the net to research this issue and I found many 3D artists having gone through this. The most common answer seems to be overheating CPUs from being pushed hard. When I get paid from my current project I plan on taking my rig to the shop and invest in more cooling solutions, a new power supply (just in case) and check my memory sticks. My BIOS seemed a bit off too but not sure if that was heat related.

I ended up nuking(reformatting) my hard drive and so far so good but scared to render till I get to the bottom of the shut off issue. Everything seems ok after cleaning dust off the fans and the reformat but I'm still afraid to do any renders. BTW anyone know if going deeper into complex KT material creation would put more stress on the cores?

For now I have reinstalled Sketchup and the only plugin I have installed so far is Artisan. I will be installing the others in one by one on an as needed basis but attempting anything I think would work with Artisan first before installing another plugin.

I always browse through this section to find some useful plugins. I have many installed prior to purchasing Artisan. I see that Artisan have many capabilities. Are there plugins that makes no sense installing if Artisan is installed? I'm worried about plugin overkill.

    • Looking for Terrain Creation Software

Hello. I already have Bryce 5 and the free version 7. I was wondering if there better terrain generation software that I couls use for Sketchup? I'm about to buy Thea Render and Artisan so I cannot afford Terragen at this time. I would like to hear from this community any suggestions when it comes to 3D terrain generation software free or at a lower price than $300. I want to enhance my 3D production as I exlpore organic modeling. I would preffer an app athat ahndles greyscale images well as I do not want to only make random terrains. Any suggestions are welcome.

I noticed that if I browse the forums as a guest, there are no new posts showing from months ago. But when I log in, I see recent posts. This should be fixed because I can imagine some people who want to join being discouraged, considering the forums dead. I wouldn't post a question on a dead forum. It's misleading and I can understand the OP's first reaction and question.

    • RE: Kerkythea Masking and Maintaing Color Question

Thank you so much! Your tutorial worked for me.

Now there is just one other mystery I want to solve. I want to experiment with existing materials from the library as backgrounds. When I click on "Material Instance" the words are added to the list but nothing happens. If I right click, nothing happens. How can I get the bronze material as a background layer?

EDIT: Mystery solved. I did a search and found out that in KT2008 I have to select the existing materials from the preview screen. I'm good to go. Thanks again.

    • Kerkythea Masking and Maintaing Color Question

I am trying to do something very basic in the material editor. I want to put a logo over a color while maintaining the colors of th logo. I have a red color on one layer and the logo png on another. But when I click on "use alpha" the transparency kicks in but the logo turns solid white with no color. I even tried using a jpeg of the logo in the diffuse channel and the png in the clip mapping but I keep getting a white logo. Does anyone know what I am missing?
