Thanks for pointing up this Helix along curve plugin! This does exactly what I was trying to do. Also in general this seems to be really great plugin.

Hopefully this functionality will be added to some of the offset plugins if there are more people benefiting this.

    • Random offset

Just a quick check. Is there a sort of "random offset" functionality of some of the plugins? See picture in order to get idea what I mean. Basically, it would be nice to be able to offset lines and give some kind of min/max values for offset distance.

    • RE: Painting over Google terrains

At least Unity3D can be used for painting Golf course textures on top of satellite image. It can be done quite easily with the help of splatmaps. For example in the picture below the brown (ground texture) could be original satellite image and the rest of the textures would have been painted with splatmap.

    • Place component with left clicking?

Is there a script that would have the functionality of placing components by left clicking with mouse? Or is this already built in Sketchup in some way?

I have a top view layout (2D) and I would need to place about 600-700 trees in the layout. The trees are just green circles (components) and I would need to place them in specific locations in the layout. This is maybe a stupid question but I just can't remember any easy way to do this quickly.

I'd need more info about your system. (Can you please fill this out in your profile as well?)

      What is your Windows version?
What is your Internet Explorer version?

It also appear that you have activated debug messages for embedded browser controls - which is unusual...

I am sorry that I have not answered earlier for this clarification request!

Thanks for helping me with this thomthom. I reinstalled both:

      TT_Lib (1.2.0) — 31 August 2010
      TT_Lib² (2.7.1) — 19 February 2013

But, I still get the same message as earlier. When I close the message (window) I also get this error message. Maybe it explains the problem a little better.

I also tried to use VRAY tools but I get error message: "Invalid Control Type: TT:GUI::Groupbox"

Do you have idea what could be the problem? I already updated the TT_Lib to TT_Lib2 - 2.7.1.rbz.

Based on my testing, the plugin that causes the problem with Sandbox tools is OSM.rb (Open Street Map).

    • RE: Problem with Sandbox tools (From Contours)

I just included an example file in the first post, which doesn't work. It can't be because of the file because the example file is just simple circles.

I noticed that I have Sketchup 6 in my computer and tested the same file and it works just fine.

    • Problem with Sandbox tools (From Contours)

I am using Sketchup 8 and I have been trying to use From Contours- tool that is included in Sandbox tool. Anyway, nothing happens when I choose contours and hit the From Contours button. I don't even see progress-bar. I have been testing this with really simple geometry but there is still the same problem. Other Sand box tool run just fine.

Has anybody else had this same problem or do you know if there any plugins that would cause problems to run Sandbox tools?

      Hi Ryan,

It is a point grid where there is 10m space between each point. This means that 3000m x 3000m area I have 300 x 300 = 90 000 points. I think that it would be better to be able to select the point count by distance, for example 40m distance between each point. This would result: 3000m / 40m = 75 points => 75 x 75 points = 5625 points in total.

    • RE: Survey of Geospatial uses in SketchUp

      Thanks for the instructions Ryan.

I managed to save the xyz-file as shapefile in QGIS and reduce the number of points. Also, I finally managed to import the file into Sketchup and create the terrain with Point Cloud Plugin.

One question, is there a way in QGIS to choose points regularly before deleting them. Now I have been using Research Tools / Random selection, which produced ok results. But, it would be even better to be able to remove points regularly/evenly.

    • RE: Survey of Geospatial uses in SketchUp

Thanks for your comments/suggestions Ryan and Chris!

The original terrain information that I have is actually xyz-file. Anyway, it includes over 700 000 points. After cropping the area into required 3000m x 3000m area I still have over 90 000 points. Therefore, I used qgis to create contours from xyz-file. I decided to export the contours including the height label as tif-file and now am tracing the contours in Sketchup. If I remember correct, there was some statement that Sketchup can handle max 5000 - 8000 points. One solution could be to reduce the number on xyz-point in the file, but I haven't found any efficient way for deleting the points in Excel or some other software.

    • RE: Survey of Geospatial uses in SketchUp

I have been testing qgis for creating terrains for Sketchup. I have been able to create contours from xyz-file information but so far I haven't found any way to import these contours into Sketchup (including elevation data). I have tried to export the contours as dxf-file, but the elevation data (z values) are not included in dxf-file. Therefore, I would say that I would be interested in different kind of solutions for bringing this data into Sketchup.

    • Unity 3D content in Sketchup

I case you are missing some trees for your Sketchup models, this could be interesting for you. I have been working a little bit with Unity 3D (free version) and I have purchased several tree collections (birch, pine, spruce, etc.). I just noticed that it is quite easy to import these trees into Sketchup. I have been using Unity’s Export obj script to export Unity trees and then I have used free import script for importing the trees into Sketchup. Below you can see the trees in Sketchup. Maybe the quality is not the best when using the trees as Sketchup model, but when rendering the model the trees look quite ok.

In unity Asset Store there are several tree collections that cost 10-20 USD. Also the poly count is quite low. The model including these 3 trees has about 5900 faces. Anyway, I don’t know if there is some kind of limitation in Unity Asset Store that would state that Asset Store content can be only used in Unity 3D. This would need to be checked before using the content in Sketchup. Also, there are plenty on good other content in Unity Asset Store (vegetation, rocks, etc.)

Below are also some links to tree collections in Unity Asset Store:

Thanks for this excellent plugin! This is a real time saver for me.

One suggestion for future improvement. When creating SGL Drawer, would it be possible to have additional layout (400, 400). This layout is sometimes used when having wastebasket in drawers.
