You are absolutely right about that car, the only reason it was put there in the first place was to hide just how far out the door threshold is from the ground!..

But then the view changed and I forgot to remove it. And this is exactly why it's always good to have someone else cast their eye over an image.

Just a quick sketchup; though not as quick as I had anticipated as there has been no survey, and thus no levels to work with which made the site very difficult indeed - there are areas of which I'd be embarrased to show you! haha

    • RE: What do you think about this render?

I'm always skeptical about a lot of HDRI's; quite a few are just JPEG's that someone has opened, converted to 32 bit and painted a bright dot where the sun is to provide higher floating point values for that area. Not saying that is the case here, but always be sure to pick good quality ones.

Check out the full resolution free sample from hdrilocations.com, it's excellent quality.

As for the exterior, the gamma on it looks to be totally wrong; not being familliar with maxwell I can't really tell you how to sort this out.

We won the second scheme too! ~ยฃ40m contract value, but spread over probably around 5 to 10 years.

    • RE: What do you think about this render?

The exterior is massively underexposed, making it draw too much attention to itself. When you take a daytime photo inside, windows will usually be clipped to white due to the contrast between the dark interior, and light exterior.

Obviously, the larger your windows are the more light can get in and thus the difference in light levels between the interior and exterior will be reduced; but there will still generally be a noticable difference.

Some of the best architectural photography around is showcased on dezeen.com, take a look at their interiors and have a look at how "blown out" all the windows look. For example; http://www.dezeen.com/2013/02/20/ett-hem-hotel-by-studioilse/

Also, the vignette is a bit too strong, I think.

Thanks for the feedback guys! As is always the way, workload has suddenly gone nuts so may have to temporarily postpone the video; but I definitely will do it when I get the chance to.

    • RE: NPR Shopping centre

Thanks, the shading and such is pure photoshop. The basic export is very simple indeed, if there's enough interest I'll do a video tutorial and explain any techniques used. The lines above the building are there because there's a handrail up there, but the glass had (for some reason) become uber transparent.

As for the light dots, they're just a bit of artistic license, I thought they looked nice; aside from that they serve no purpose.

All plugins posted on this forum is listed in that thread.

That really isn't particularly helpful given the sheer number of plugins, is it? Especially given some of their cryptic names in certain cases. Creating a screengrab, cropping it, uploading and posting it almost certainly took more time than "check out x plugin by x".

[edit] Thanks Rich, will check it out.

    • Smooth camera paths

      Hey guys & girls,

As i'm sure you can guess from the title I'm looking for a plugin that creates smooth camera paths/keyframes/timings, etc. I have searched the forums and found quite a few topics relating to this but they all appear fairly old and I feel I could possibly have missed out on some developments that may have happened in the interim period.

All I want to do is be able to produce decent looking animations without the trademark sketchup jerkiness, the way it appears to "bounce" along a path as it reaches each view is not a look I'm going for!

What are the latest developments in this area? Any help is much appreciated.

    • RE: Residential building

For architectural shots it really, really, really helps if you straighten the verticals. Sketchup even has a two point perspective that will do this for you.

Real circles, curves & arcs that aren't faceted unless you choose them to be. Yet still with the ability to choose x number of snap points.

    • Export Resolution & Safe frames

Currently the sketchup image export setup is quite poor, for example the height/width ratio is dependant on the size of the window you're working in, which means making a perfectly square shot, or even a portrait shot rather than landscape is almost impossible; unless of course you re-size your window to suit, in which case making the setup repeatable then becomes an issue.

I'd like it if you could set each scene with an "output resolution" or "aspect ratio" control, which then introduces safe frames within the sketchup window, much like the ones in 3ds max. Surely this wouldn't be too hard to impliment? I think it would be a massively important feature.

Here are some shots from the other project I spoke about. This was an even crazier deadline which resulted in a couple of us staying until 2-3am. It's only an outline design that has already changed quite a bit, but was to show "what could be done" with the space.

Looks ace, though because the right side of the image is generally quite light it does draw my attention quite a bit. Perhaps a vignette on that side would help draw focus back to the middle of the image. Other than that, really nice - especially the colour palette.
