    • Exporting custom aspect ratio's

      Hi all,

Long, long time user of Sketchup here and one thing I cannot comprehend is why no ability to export image aspect ratios other than your viewport ratio has ever been included.

Surely I can't be the only person on earth that might want to export let's say, a square image?

      Rant over.

I am sure a while back I found a workflow or plugin that allowed me to get around this very bad limitation, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was, or how I did it.

If any of you Sketchup wizards would be so kind as to share your methods, that would be very much appreciated.

      Many thanks in advance,
      Chris

    • Reset multiple groups texture scale

      Hi all,

I'm really, really hoping there is a plugin for this as it'd save me a lot of time...

Basically I've imported a huge model from Revit into Sketchup and I'd estimate around 30-40% of the texture maps are the wrong scale (obviously something in the conversion process as they're all set to 25.4m) despite the model being at the correct scale. I imported via Simlab Soft exporter.

The current laborious workflow is to explode the various groups and components and apply a new material en masse. This is fine for objects that have no intersections, but for those that are intersecting it's not an option (takes forever to explode, joins the objects into one unmanageable mess, also loses UV coordinates this way).

I was wondering if there's a plugin that would allow me to select multiple groups/components and right click/reset texture scale, or similar?

      Many thanks all.
      Chris

    • RE: 3ds to Sketchup

Okay, so I have finally found a solution for anybody else wishing to go FROM 3ds max TO sketchup WITH UV coordinates.

First off in max you need to have the Guruware OBJ exporter installed: http://www.guruware.at/main/objio/index.html

To export as obj from max you need to (in the obj export options) click the Map-Export button and check the "use map-path" option. This should then write any textures to a folder next to your exported obj file.

Secondly to import .obj into Sketchup you need to install the QuadFace Tools plugin which will give you the option to import .obj.

Now just select your .obj file, set the units to whatever your system units were set to in max (not your display units) and click import. Hey presto you should now have UV mapped import from 3ds max.

    • 3ds to Sketchup

      Hey guys,

Having spent the best part of 10 years taking stuff the other way, I now need to take things from 3DS max into sketchup whilst retaining their UV coordinates. I am absolutely convinced such a thing is possible; I've seen plenty of models that have originated in max (evermotion etc) that have ended up in .skp format with all their mapping intact.

Does anyone have any tips on this? What intermediate format should I be using? .3ds/.obj/.dae...? I can't seem to find anything that retains the UV's that've been assigned in max.

Yeah, they're all fairly beefy machines. Have tried several times re-downloading the installer.

    • Sketchup installer "ended prematurely"

      Hey guys,

We're having a couple of issues on some of our PC's upgrading to Sketchup 2018. They are all windows 10 machines, all fully up-do-date including drivers etc.

The issue is that Sketchup 2018 simply won't install; it gives the following error message:

      @unknownuser said:

"Sketchup Pro 2018 (64-bit) Setup Wizard ended prematurely

Sketchup Pro 2018 Setup Wizard ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run Setup Wizard again. Click the Finish button to exit the Setup Wizard"

This also happens when the installer is (right click) run as administrator (not just a user with admin priveleges.

This is concerning as our 19 seat 2017 licence expires in 4 days, meaning some users will be unable to work in Sketchup.

Well, if you go to forum thread of that plugin, there Rami says:

      @rami_lpm said:

      Warning
This plugin is not working correctly in sketchup 2017. As a workaround, you can set resolution to 1020,2040 or 4080

So set your resolution multiplied by 2. There is no limit to this which means you can set it 8160, 16320 etc...

      Perfect! Thank you!

I was using multiples of 1024. What an odd issue to have.

[Edit] HAH! The issue comes back if you use styles. Brilliant. Surely trimble must issue a fix for this?

I'm not looking for a render engine - I want to use Sketchups styles to output "sketchy" images at stages that are too early in the design phase to warrant rendering properly in 3DS max/VRay.

I don't understand how to operate this. It just creates two scenes (Default and a_-180░) then does nothing.

This is the type of cubemaps we're producing (albeit this is a 12x1/stereo) http://cadpoint.co.uk/img//ChaosGroup/newinVray.3.2/blk_gear_vr.jpg

That's disappointing. Presumably because both export plugins exhibit very similar issues, then this is a problem inherent in Sketchup? Surely two separate codes are unlikely to produce the same problem?

It's a real shame, SU could really do with some more export options now that VR is taking off.

That is pretty much exactly what I'm after, but it exhibits a similar kind of issue it seems. It starts putting "seams" along the right and bottom edges of each image exported.

    • 6x1 Cubemap

      Hey guys/girls,

I'm currently looking at producing some VR scenes for presentations and am wanting to make either a 6x1 cubemap, or 12x1 stereo cubemap.

I've used the "cubicpanoout.rb" plugin, but this seems to create some rather strange artifacts on images above 800 pixels. Does anybody know of any other plugins/exporters that will produce this kind of image? Even "cubicpanoout" doesn't stitch the images together (which can be a bit of a headache, as they're all mirrored).

The end result I'm after is a sketchy panorama, much like the normal 2D exports you get straight out of Sketchup. I am not looking for a render engine (I already render the vast majority of work in 3DS Max/VRay).

Any help would be much appreciated.

I just recorded it happening. The second push/pull operation is a double click. You can see the correct face orientation on the first, and the distance typed, and the direction.

The only thing I'm saying is that right from the first P/P you that you make you'll know (or can know) exactly the next one's direction. If you would have wanted it to go the opposite direction, then start in opposite direction.

Now this is the issue. Sometimes it DOESN'T act like this.

There are occasions whereby I may pull a front face by 50mm, and then double click another front face and it will push it 50mm. This is the behaviour that is unexpected.
