adding- this actually could be a bug.. not likely but there's still the possibility.
he's saying autosave is set to 10minutes but there's no file?

and yes my preferences is set to auto backup every ten minutes and in any other event i always find a backup after a crash, like stated i had started the file in 2014 perhaps this is why it did not auto backup

when an older version model is opened in a new version, it's converted to the new version upon opening.. so using a 2014 model in 2015 shouldn't have anything to do with the autosave not working.

i'm not sure where to look for autosave files on windows but, are you sure it's gone?

(though, i suppose if the file was saved at some point.. ie- no longer named untitled.skp, the autosave would of saved to the folder where the file was located.. or that's how it works on mac at least.. otherwise, there's an autosave folder in application support for storing untitled autosaves)

and security issues aside, it would actually be sweet to have a user's current environment/lighting/etc be applied to a 3D model on screen..
i imagine we'll probably have stuff like that one day though maybe not til the flat panel display phase is over.

    • RE: What can a Sketchup user do with CAD-drawings?

      @pbacot said:

I guess my experience is colored because I use my own CAD drawings and I don't generally have problems in accuracy. But I have seen where the accuracy of an import can be undetectably off--until it causes problems in working the model (closing faces etc.) later on.

fwiw, when i realized the accuracy issue, it was when i was first learning rhino using a template with feet as the units and a tolerance of .001 unit (so, lower tolerance than sketchup's 1/1000th inch).. i brought it into sketchup and for a minute, thought sketchup was more accurate than rhino since everything wasn't exactly in place in sketchup (out of whack enough to get a 'don't panic- there's a problem.. should i fix it?' message..
which eventually led me to realize the tolerances in rhino were adjustable.

but 1/1000th unit is a good to high tolerance setting for most situations so if the original cad app was drawn in feet, it's likely their tolerance wasn't set tighter than .001 feet.. so that's probably the most notable scenario to look out for.

on the flipside, if the original modeler was using millimeters or centimeters at .001, you won't have any accuracy problems when bringing that into sketchup.

[but even then, this is assuming the cad model went through some trimming/splitting/boolean operations in the original application which is when these tolerance issues will readily show up]

Mac OS market share continues to waver around 5%. Some developers have to consider if it's worthwhile. IDK what the modeling Mac OS percentage might be or if anyone can tell. Might be higher.

yeah, i don't know how to interpret all those numbers/stats/etc..
it just seems year after year, macs continue to rise in popularity

      http://techcrunch.com/2014/11/07/mac-achieves-highest-u-s-pc-market-share-ever-in-q3-2014-according-to-idc/
      (13% u.s. market share)
2.3million units sold in Q3 of 2014 seems nothing to balk at but like i said, i don't know.

as far as modeling goes-> Autodesk, McNeel, http://www.onshape.com (new engineering application via solidworks original team), sketchUp, and more.. they all seemingly think there's worth in providing osx support these days as they're bringing the programs over to mac.

Not sure that is very easy!
It's also a Standalone but seems you must have other Progs first time ! ?

yeah, i've seen that before.. in my opinion, they made a mistake by not making it cross-platform (it's windows only)..

grasshopper isn't available for mac yet and probably won't be for at least another year (or probably longer).. dynamo could of swooped up all the mac users itching for grasshopper capabilities..

i understand that older software was written in a time when doing cross-platform stuff was a lot more difficult and it's equally difficult to properly bring the legacy code over to mac... but nowadays, i don't think it makes much sense to start a new software which only works on one operating system.

(well, unless it only works on mac.. then i guess i'm ok with that πŸ˜† )
      eg. http://www.pixelmator.com/mac/ , https://www.apple.com/mac/numbers/ , http://www.cheetah3d.com )

    • RE: What can a Sketchup user do with CAD-drawings?

a problem i've found with cad drawings is that often, the application used to create the drawings has user settable tolerances and in many practical scenarios, the tolerances can be set lower than sketchup's non-adjustable tolerance.. so if you use a cad drawing in sketchup which was drawn with a lesser tolerance, it can come in with points ever so slightly out of whack which can lead to big headaches further down the line..

so unless you know the exact source of the .dwg and that the file was created with equal or greater tolerances than sketchup (which is always .001") , i wouldn't recommend using the import as base geometry.. import it and set it off to the side as reference but redraw the stuff with sketchup tools.

(and this only outlines one of a number of other factors that may cause issues.. the other main one to be leery of would be the possibility that the .dwg author is a sloppier modeler than you πŸ˜‰ )

hmm.. wow.. not sure how i missed that one (besides most of the action in the thread happening in non-cold months and me being more active here in the winter πŸ˜‰ )

but yeah, that's basically it.. a lot of features i've seen in other paneling tools aren't going to happen in this one but maybe with some carefully crafted surfaces, some of the limitations will be work-around-able?

idk.. going give it a test drive for sure.
      thanks for the link!

youre so right about that sir, , i only hope it could be , considering that the bezier surface can actualy, or can possibly work on parametererizing its quads 😍

yeah, i guess it would be possible if the tool used to create the surface (like bezier surface) was also in charge of dividing it up and paneling. ?

i don't think it would work if i wanted to panel a surface created with, say, curviloft unless the surface itself were somehow rebuilt by the paneling tool?

however it may work, it sounds like a huge undertaking by a coder(s) but regardless, i still think it'd be sweet to see the capabilities in sketchup .

that would be very neat to see in sketchup.

i'm not sure how possible it is as i don't think sketchup parameterizes(?) surfaces in the necessary way but still, it'd be great to see paneling capabilities in sketchup.

You're diverting this thread to something very ugly... πŸ‘Ž

likewise.. i get sort of bummed when any time people question the motives of a government, they so easily get thrown in the conspiracy theory nut job category.

it shouldn't only be our right to question the governments, it's our duty and it's the only way to keep a democracy healthy and/or in check.. but when the people who are actually questioning the government are so easily shamed by the majority (who, coincidentally don't question their govt), it leads to a very sick society in that the masses are inadvertently aiding corruption.

but hey.. here's a conspiracy theory
the term itself 'conspiracy theory' has been tainted by the conspirators or made into a buzzword for the masses to consume..

9/11 events and the report has many many questionable holes in it.. should i question them?? nah.. it's just a conspiracy theory..

      a certain level of complexity

i guess you'd have to elaborate on what you mean by complex.

sketchup, regardless of hardware, isn't designed to handle complex models.
(well, it is.. but again, i guess it depends on what you mean by complex)

just for reference, if you go Window-> Model Info-> Statistics (entire model).. what does the report say for Edges and Faces on one of your complex models?

but to answer your question.. a whole lot of people use sketchup on macbook pros.
(me being one but you'll find many people here at this site using them.. you'll even find that many sketchUp developers themselves use apple laptops)

Spread the risk over a large field Everybody should've manned up and published these cartoons. Well played Media. Well Played. 🀒

the 'major' publications aren't independent thinkers.. they're propaganda machines.. thought that was obvious by now πŸ˜‰

(for instance-- do you really think all these major outlets decided to censor these cartoons independently of each other..? all on the same day.? ..or, is it more likely one person told all of them not to publish?)
