I initially implemented skyboxes in pure Ruby in SU. # skybox functionality class MyViewObserver < Sketchup;;ViewObserver def initialize(stub) .. build a definition using 'stub' as filepath skybox = Sketchup.active_model.definitions[dname] @skybox = Sketchup.active_model.entities.add_instance skybox, Geom;;Transformation.new @skybox.locked= true end def onViewChanged (view) @skybox.locked= false @skybox.move! view.camera.eye @skybox.locked= true end def remove @skybox.locked= false Sketchup.active_model.entities.erase_entities @skybox end end def add_skybox $skybox = MyViewObserver.new("~projects/Ruby/skybox/space1") Sketchup.active_model.active_view.add_observer($skybox) end ie Sketchup will move the skybox along with your camera. Works OK - only let down by SU crazily aggressive bounds on Z when it draws. Adam @alan fraser said: Texture Maker will generate a cgi landscape and sky and export it in a variety of formats...including a skybox. Screenshot and result attached below. Sky boxes are used extensively in games and work very well. They can be used well in SU, as Adam says, but only really from a very fixed viewpoint....that being the centre of the cube. Games get around this by locking the skybox to the viewer. As you move through a first person perspective shoot-em-up the skybox moves with you, so always appears in the correct perspective and always infinitely distant. This obviously isn't the case in SU. I realise this thread has drifted slightly away from Ruby, but there's a challenge for somebody. Skyboxes can work well in SU, but generally only if you move a few feet...or catch a glimpse out of a window, not up and down streets. Of course you can make them really huge, so that any novement by the viewer is very slight in comparison...but then you get clipping problems. The simplest solution is simply to map a panoramic image around a cylinder. Here is a very old thread from the old forum, now transferred to Google Groups. So old, in fact, that it predates SU's ability to map around cylinders, so I had to do it by slicing the image into sections...but the resulting skps still work ok for most situations.

The 3d exchange facility allows import but no export and is at an additional cost.

Ah, Didier, that is even a more efficient way to assign tranparency. Also, I use groups on just about everything and once you are inside a group the the display of bitmaps "behind" may not be viewable.

Gata: " ... if you softened the out-of-bound mesh from a Sandbox-made grid, then it's one face to select for deletion." This tip will help be out significantly! I will have to download Soap Skin Bubble and install it on my new PC. I had forgotten all about it. Thanks, again. John

I can only reiterate what has been said before. Sketchup for speed in conjunction with Rhino for complexity works very well indeed. The new exporter does a pretty good job too.

TIG, I've made a discovery. Evidently I have a different version of Grow on my machine at work thatn at home. The one at home gives me an arrow to set the center of the grow operation and three different dialog boxes with the second covering scaling including the option to have exponential or linear scaling. The version at work, which I downloaded from Didier's library today doesn't give me those options or the arrow. Hmmm...... Maybe I have an old version at work? But. I have a puzzle about the version I have at home. I'm trying to create a series of circles that get smaller as they go up. In the version at work, I entered a scale of 0.9 (for both X and Y scaling) and the circles got smaller as they went up. The version I have on my home machine makes progressively larger circles with that same 0.9 for X and Y. I tried a -0.9 but that doesn't help either.

Didier, I downloaded from the link above. The attachment shows the active selection (the top-most surface) and the hidden lines I wanted to select so I could delete them. It seems the menu is missing an option for Hidden lines or am I overlooking something? Also, should the Search Through list include "current selection" option? John [image: 7din_HiddenEdges.png]

Thanks for all the replies even though it sounds as though what I want isn't easily obtainable! Yes, I was talking about Didier's ADO plugin. I'll remove the files from my plugins folder as suggested though they didn't get loaded by SU 2015 at all that I could see. Jon

Change the property of these edges so that when their respective faces are delected, the edges remain.

@djh said: @box said: This is a feature request thread from 2007. Was the request granted? No. Alt never did constrain the Orbit tool. In fact, considering what you were asking for in your other thread, Alt is the last thing you want to hold while orbiting. If you can't orbit as you want with a mouse, you should follow the advice given there and get a 3D Connexion device and use it for orbiting.
