That's a great vid, cotty; I've long kept it for reference myself.

OP: Have you tried using the native sandbox tools-->from scratch and then use smoove to shape. Do a search for youtube vids on these; folks work quite well with them. I don't myself or I would spill some beans directly.

Thanks for being explicit about what you are looking for.

I wasn't clear that what I'd like to do is dock some plugin toolbars on the sides but they won't shape that way; they stay horizontal.

    • Can only SU toolbars be docked on the sides?

Can only SU toolbars be docked on the sides, as it seems? Are there any possible fixes for this? On typically wide proportioned screens padding the top and bottom with toolbars leads to attenuated free screen area.

      Old question; still begging solution.

That's nice, Jeff. For me the only thing that's missing is a pic of the plane slicing the cylinder... to show the lack of continuity and stepping (which isn't cause you say it's a sine curve?). You sliced it and multiple copied it? Show it all, man, cylinder with multiple slicing planes.

BTW, is that a dynamic component spinning or what?

      Thank you very much.

After thinking I'm done, I'm reminded that it seems more disjointed in your ani and looks smoother in your last pic. Just a point of view thing I guess, but for me that disjointedness was odd.

I am not complaining, as the world resists strangely my specification.

I failed to mention the wireframe, edges only selection as I thought it was clear. Seems it was not, but as you say 'line to tube' doesn't require that.

Here's one with the non-radially faced sphere (dome), in which the faces are more approximately equal on the surface. If it is desired that the grid be regular before draping then take the faces only and drape the even grid from '(sandbox) from scratch' or other and drape as Pilou showed. Once draped of course the grid is distorted (except in ortho plan view).

EDIT: I thought your rant was funny. No rant (honey), it's just another big name, high priced rendering looking for a home.

You could be an inspiration to millions. We could see flowering here on this very thread the seeds of a revolution, bountiful and joyous. Let the people's juices flow, man. Re-edit.

      1. one of the sphere or other similar draw shape plugins
      2. distort it to your liking; subtract the bottom half perhaps.
      3. as the maestro says, use line to tube to make the structure 3d or maybe pipe along path or maybe some other.

It is required that you post your results here. (See clause 4995.b.645.jd, subsection 2 of your user agreement.)

    • RE: Rotatable north arrow back again please!

I saw you were visually explicit about the fact that you were running pro and the angle and so on, just not which it was, some rotatable north arrow or solar north tool.

      From SU help:
      @unknownuser said:

Editing the North angle can only be done with the Pro version of SketchUp 8 or with a previous version of SketchUp. To enable the North angle, click View > Toolbars > Solar North

Likewise, there can only be one North angle used in a SketchUp file. If you need to display varying North angles, you can create separate files or use an older version of SketchUp.

Does this pic (the one above) show the implementation of a rotatable north arrow (or solar north tool) in SU Pro, or what?

I've seen WRONG methods for making a threads using this method

Those equivalencies are not quite so in my book. Did I miss something more? Something more explicit would have helped, a link to the video, a pic, etc., even if Jeff could be trusted, in this case, apparently.

      Where's kito?

SU menus, etc., where shown, are in German. 😞

      That's a plan!

Cruel pessimist, ardent realist that you may be, surely there's room for some real genuine honest-to-goodness valid modern art in this world of ours. If only it could hold a candle to what you've done already, with your plan, the plan!

Would someone point me to the original thread, please.

What view is that, Jeff? Seems like a side view of a cylinder cut by a plane is a straight edge, as you show for the helix....oh, you're showing the flattened out view, wherein they are reversed in their flatness, as it were. I guess.

If you could illustrate the flattening out that would cinch it all for a few moments, I feel sure. That's OK; I should accept that as a personal task rather than asking you to model it for me. I'm imagining this is getting stale. Thanks for hanging in.

I see what you are saying, and thanks for showing it, but I didn't think his goal was a helix; I thought he wanted the red line.

I wonder what his purpose wis (was/is).
