@chris fullmer said: Can you just turn the navigator 90 degrees on your desk? moving forward by pushing sideways might not something that they built in, as it would just confuse most people to the point of insanity. see pic.. i thought so, too. i'm searching on- but not that many people use this gadget.. there are mouse-emulators for it, thats it. or maybe i am wrong- but don't think so. i'll see.. but thanks my hand

@remus said: close your eyes tim Opened up the power supply for a little poke around and found the spring thats meant to hold the fan blade in tension was loose. Swapped it for an old fan i had lying around and all is well again. Oh, well spotted. I completely forgot to mention fan noises. I had a 'wind tunnel' powermac for a while. Perhaps that experience made me want to completely forget forever anything to do with fans...

Thanks Tim. Voodoopad looks like a Mac only thing and Evernote looks like it needs an iPhone or equivalent. I really want something that doesn't take screen real estate and doesn't require leaving the application I'm working in at the moment. So far the "Magic Slate" seems to be the only thing that will work for me. At least they're cheap. TTFN Dave

An iPhone is worth it just for the decent web-browser. Everything else is pure bonus. You get a jolly good iPod. A nice photo album in your pocket. A moderately capable camera. It can play some games that a lot of people like. It is always net-connected. It can find you maps and soon, will be a turn-by-turn GPS nav system. It can control your Mac when playing FrontRow stuff. It can control your house lights/security/etc. Oh, and it's not bad as a cellphone. All in all, for $200 plus the equivalent of an afternoon's work to run it for a year, I think it's a pretty decent device.

Image Modeller looks very good, at least at Youtube videos... although there is something free. Latest public beta is from October 2008. You will find a link there. Lukas Mach's - Insight 3D http://www.opengl.cz/ He intends to release it with a source code. It will make it an open-source project as Blender. I have tried the Insight, but without reading the documentation, I have not achieved a 3D result. Will try it once again when time permits. Tomasz

Hi, I am little bit confused about peoples comments about UAC. It was a knee-jerk reaction to the demands to "improve" security. It was undoubtedly a stupid thing for Microsoft to introduce. All it did was annoy the hell out of everyone However, since SP1 it is a feature that can simply be switched off. So, thats what I did. Problem solved. I have a machine that is running Vista Home Premium and it is just like using XP except with a bit of extra eye candy. Yes, the hardware needed to run Vista is more demanding than that needed for XP but hardware is constantly advancing and most "standard" machines produded today (or even a year ago) run Vista fine. I am not a Microsoft fanboy (many years ago I was a Mac fanboy) but I have found Vista to be a stable OS with a slightly prettier GUI. It wasn't the leap ahead it should have been and Windows 7 is just a further refinement of Vista. But I can live with a steady evolution rather than a revolution of the OS I use. To be honest, I don't think many software applications (including SketchUp?) that run on Windows come anyway near taking advantage of the advancements that have already been provided by this OS. It seems to me that software developers are still years behind in bringing their software up to a level of exploiting the advances that have been made. Why aren't we all running 64bit applications that are truly multi-threaded? Why don't all serious graphic programs fully utilise DirectX? I must be getting old. Regards Mr S (aka Mr Grumpy)

No, it's not very powerful; but then I don't need anything powerful when on the road...I need something to review and demonstrate models more than actually create them (although I can do that if pushed). I do all my real work on the desktop system. The Asus runs the like of SU, Corel and Photoshop just fine, if rather slowly. It also has a rather neat feature called Express Gate (presumably using some form of Linux) which enables you to cold boot into a pared-down OS in about 5-10 seconds, giving you web access for browsing, email, chat or accessing media files on the hard drive or USB sticks. Basically, it's a big version of my Blackberry...but one that will run full-sized Windows OS.

I have used both fx1400 (in a laptop) and the fx1500 in a desktop. Never had any problems with artifacts in either. The 1500 seems faster but I have no benchmark. No idea about ATI except that I have always avoided them.

Dittos Pixero! Good design doesn't mean that something just looks cool on day 1. It'd better come with a lifetime supply of canned air. Overall, A for aesthetics, D for design. -Brodie

Interesting find: When I turn off UAC (User account control) completely in Vista I can once again access the drive.

Alternatively here is a free online service that doesn't require you to download anything. They convert the files for you, and you then download the files from them http://www.zamzar.com/

i use safari 4 as well but i haven't encountered the problem.. occasionally, i'll try to download a ruby and instead of it downloading as a .rb file, the actual script's text will display in my browser ... (happens with rubies from crai.archi) when that happens, i rightclick and choose "save linked file to xxxxxxxx" .. x being your download location..
