    • Difficulty uploading DC to warehouse...

I uploaded a DC to the warehouse this morning with no problems. The file was 564K. I then tried to upload another DC but my cursor has been spinning for the better part of a half hour. I did try a couple of re-starts but still no luck. This file is larger, 824K. Is there that big of a difference between file sizes and what will upload fast as to forever?

      Thanks

It might have to do with HOW you uploaded it. You need to right click on the component, then choose "Save As" and save it somewhere. Then find that file and open it. Then upload it the warehouse like that. Then it will be uploaded as a DC.

      Chris

It was the "Save As" step that I missed. All is working fine now.
      Thanks!

    • RE: Dynamic Component Symbol not displaying...

I re-read the information on creating dynamic components and found a simple omission on my part which prevented SU from recognizing the component as dynamic. All it took was an = symbol with one of the attributes. Now I see the green DC symbol in my component window.

I uploaded the component to the warehouse yesterday. Today when I logged on, the 3D view had been added to my model but the DC symbol was not there. Will the DC symbol eventually display for the model?

Just to make sure nothing happened in the upload step, I downloaded the model and the DC symbol is still in the component window.

It could some simple omission again on my part but at the moment I can't figure this out.

      Thanks,
      Tim

Yes, they do. It takes a while to process every submitted model so from a couple of hours to a day or so...
Don't worry, it will be there.

Thanks for the quick replies. This is an AWESOME resource! πŸ˜„

    • Creating model views for 3D Warehouse

Some models on the WH have a viewing option to rotate the model within the browser. It is called 3D view. I know this can be done but I can't find out how to do it. Can someone please steer me in the right direction?

      Thanks! πŸ˜„

      Hi Tim

I note you are using a Mac. I am having the same trouble, login OK through web browser, and can download etc. but unable to upload as SU does not make the connection.

I think this is a Mac specific problem, and I too would like to see it fixed if anybody has any ideas.

      Tasman

My problem has been resolved. I believe it was a proxy issue with our servers. I was always able to download models via access to the warehouse by SketchUp. I wasn't able to upload models. All is well now. πŸ˜„

      Hi Tim,

Normally you don't need to claim credits because it is automatically generated when you upload to the Warehouse. Can you upload your model at all? It seems that if SU cannot connect to the internet when you want to claim credit, it wouldn't be able to connect when you want to upload either.

As for SU connection to the internet, check your internet settings (allow SU to connect) as well as your firewall settings and if you have any 3rd party app (like Norton or such) that may prevent SU from connecting.

I can get models from the warehouse but can not share models. Again it seems because SU is not connected to the internet as far as my account. I will look into the SU connection.

      Thanks

    • Having difficulty claiming credit for model...

I am preparing to upload models to the 3D warehouse. Before I upload, I want to fill in the author section of my model. I got a prompt to sign in to my Google account. I do have an account and attempted to sign in via SketchUp. That attempt failed and the error message said to sign in from a web browser. I was able to sign in from my web browser but when back in SketchUp, I still could not author the model. SketchUp does not show me as signed in.

Any ideas as to what might be going on.

Try to run through this tutorial model. There are certain conditions that must be met for the DC symbol to appear on o model, although I would need to look up the reference in order to remember what they are.

    • Dynamic Component Symbol not displaying...

I have been creating some very simple dynamic components. Nothing fancy, just basic product information and an URL address. When I open my component browser, I see the components that I have created but the green DC symbol is not there. I intend to upload these to the 3D warehouse but I would like for the symbol to display so people will know that this is a DC.

Any thoughts about what I am doing wrong is appreciated.
      Tim πŸ˜„

One more thing. I had created another DC where I animated a drawer and a door. I opened that model and sure enough the DC symbol was displayed for the both the drawer and door but not for the overall model component. I had keyed in product info along with an URL address for the overall component. Why would the symbol display for parts of a model and not the overall component? I thought even basic product information makes the component dynamic, especially since it is entered in the same attribute window.

      Thanks,
      Tim

    • RE: Hiding facets in an imported CAD file

      @gaieus said:

Cool, I wasn't sure if I got the problem right. A couple of further tips/info:

When you just hide the edges, they will still separate the facets i.e. you can select them individually and the whole surface will look faceted.
With softening the edges, you'll end up with a curved surface which is still made up of these facets but SU displays it as one, smooth area. The only place it is obvious that it's also made up of these facets is the edges/sides of these surfaces (say the top and bottom of a cylinder).

You can manually hide edges by using the Shift + Eraser tool and soften them with the Ctrl+Eraser tool.

Smooth surfaces cannot be PushPulled, the texture cannot be positioned on them and some other limitations also apply. You can however reveal the dividing edges (and perform some of these operations) by going to View > Hidden geometry (it will also reveal other hidden things, not only softened edges).

      Etc. etc...

Now that you mention it, I do remember the trick with the eraser. I just had not thought of the smoothing as a solution. Thanks again for the tip. πŸ˜„

      @gaieus said:

I'd rather soften them than hide (in 3D I mean - so that you get a smooth surface rather than a faceted one). If you select all then right click > Soften/smooth edges, a dialog pops up where you can set the slider to your needs.

      Or am I misunderstanding something?

Perfect, thank you Gaieus. That is exactly what I was looking for.

    • Hiding facets in an imported CAD file

When I import a CAD file into SU, the curves are facetted. The same effect happens with an exploded curve in SU. I don't believe there is a way to re-constitute the curve, which is okay. What I am trying to do is hide the facets that are generated in the model. Granted it is an aesthetic thing. I can select and hide each facet but this can become quite laborious. I know I can hide edges in Styles, maybe that is my solution. But is there a way to select these facetted edges as a group and hide them?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

In the SU dialog/inspector inside the View tab there's a checkbox
that says "Preserve Scale on Resize", try that.
With it unchecked it behaves like SU when its main app window is resized.

    • Re-sizing bounding box of SketchUp model

I am playing around with the new LayOut and came across something I don't quite understand. When I import a model into LayOut, there is a bounding box around the model image. If I click on one of the side edges, I can expand the box without effecting the size of model view. More of the model shows. But when I click on the top or bottom edge, the model is re-sized/scaled. I don't understand why it works one way on the side edges and another way on the top and bottom edges.

I want to re-size the bounding box independent of the model and then tweak the model view. Is this possible?

      Thanks,
      Tim ❓

    • RE: Serial number issues

Did that too and they sent me the same number I had, very weird.

      @daniel said:

Are you sure you gave them the correct number? You might ask them to resend the licensing e-mail to you.

I re-read the instructions and saw that to upgrade all you needed was an earlier serial number. Since they didn't accept my Pro 6 number, I got my Pro 5 number out and was finally able to upgrade. I was a little disappointed that no one at Google responded when I contacted them through the SU website. At least here I know folks are listening.

I am up and running. Thanks for the feedback.

if so you have to run the program as an administrator to license, otherwise no chance.

    • Serial number issues

This is very odd. I attempted to upgrade to Pro 7 this morning and when I gave Google my serial number I received this reply (serial number has already been upgraded). No it hasn't. That is what I am trying to do. My office has two licenses. I tried the very same upgrade on another computer with a different serial number with no problem. One of us now has SU 7 but I am the odd man out.

Has this happened to anyone else? I submitted a report to Google but no reply.
