Cheers. Will definitely have a play around with Profile Builder. That looks extremely useful for a lot of things. Thanks

@tig said: The built-in Sandbox tools [activated from Window > Preferences > Extensions, then View > Toolbars > Sandbox] has several tools. 'Drape' makes the outline of the track etc onto the surface [you then need to make adjustments for levels etc]... 'Stamp' takes the shape and 'stamps it onto the surface - making cuttings or embankments as required to a pre-entered slope 'offset' [you will need to do this is pieces for different 'levels' of track]... Cheers, the drape tool was exactly what I needed. Never used those tools before, only smoove and make terrain. Pompeyfan

I'm only a very part time hardware nerd but graphics cards boggle my mind. Drivers do almost nothing for every other piece of hardware (ok, they're very important but for the most part if your hardware is working your drivers are fine and driver updates only come along every year or so). But with graphics cards, for some reason that's beyond me, which driver you have can matter as much as which card you have. Thank goodness it's not like that with cpu's and every other piece of hardware or I'd go crazy. -Brodie

Pompeyfan, There can be multiple reasons for your speed issue - so it is hard to be too specific. But generally speaking - the following might help, and are based on some broad assumptions. While working in sketchup: - the video card and memory are critical, as your processor should be sufficient. All of the comments regarding the on-board intel accelerators apply. A seperate nvidia or ati chip based video card with dedicated 256 mb of memory would make a difference. More than 1 Gb of ram would help for larger files. While rendering with the V-ray plugin: - the video card play no part with the exception of showing you the progress and end result on the screen. There are a couple of potential causes and solutions 1- Vray likes to take all of the processing power of the chip - so you will not likely be able to do much else while rendering with a single core chip. also - Vray can take advantage of running multiple cores to help with this. 2- Your memory of 1 Gb is low for rendering - jumping to 2 Gb should help your system with some breathing room 3- Vray has some very efficient pre-sets for rendering that I would suggest you stick to till you get more comfortable with what can and should be tweaked. 4- File optimization can never be over rated, all of us can always do better. Hope these help - I know how frustrating it can get waiting for the renders at times! Bytor

I think a lot has been said already on how to reduce the poly-count of a model. 1.using a lower size eg.sides 12,sides 8 when drawing a circle or arc 2,Using components(especially for windows ,doors etc that repeat quite often if you are modelling a building. 3,Importing models with small polycount especially trees.Using trees with very high detail will slow your computer down considerably. You may want to use trees that are "face-me component instead. 4.If I have to use a texture image bigger than 1MB,I first open it up in Microsoft picture manager or paint , reduce the pixel size and save it as a Jpeg File.An Image file of 5MB can yield 602kB through this process. You can now use the Image with its reduced file size on your model thereby reducing your polycount. 5.You shouldn't also forget to purge your model of unwanted/unused materials and component

I think my drivers may have been the problem. I had v6, latest version was v14. And it seems to be handling a 16MB model rather easily now. Thanks!
