yeah, its really cool. now I could go to Google Wave and look for any waves with

      with:Csaba AND bruhahaaa

and then I could see, how many times you burst out laughing... πŸ˜„
(to be precise, I would have to enter your full wave adress, not only your name...)

you would have to search for it. and thankfully Google Wave provides us with mighty search tools.

first, we know, that its a public wave. therefore we should type into the search field:

      with:public

we also know, that SCF occurs in the title. therefore we also type

      title:SCF

into the search field. then we hit the search button. and theoretically you should find the wave.

(sorry for lecturing like that. I am just so delighted by these search options πŸ˜„ )

I think most importantly it is an open protocol to build the base of future communication.

one important feature is for example, that conversations don't have to be linear. we see that on this forum quite often, that some people are discussing slightly off topic things, due to the technology of the forum embedded in the linear flow of the thread.
with wave however this off topic conversation could simply build another branch in the conversation, leaving the main topic undisturbed. it could be discussed in that off topic branch until it just ends or it becomes such an interesting topic of its own, that a new wave is dedicated to it (with a link to this new wave at the end of the side conversation).

I know, that needs some getting used to and it only works as long as people really stick to certain rules. but even in a simple chat situation with my girlfriend it proved quite useful already...

    • RE: 20 Google Wave Invites

oh, inviting people should be easy. just drag and drop their contact to the top of the wave.

and to your question what wave is for? well, it is an attempt to iron out the flaws of 40 year old email...
for example if you are in an email dialog with me. I answer you by pressing reply. that copies your mail into a new file and I add my text above. when you answer to this message, you'll copy your old email plus my reply to a new file and add your comments. now if that goes on for a while we have a big pile of dead copies of the same text. and we haven't even started thinking about the mess if its more than two people involved (almost impossible to handle with ordinary mail at present)...

Wave on the other hand is a hosted conversation. so if you answer a note of someone else, you add to that onine-document. that has the advantage of preventing unnecessary copies of the same text and also you have the benefit of everything being in real-time. you don't have to wait minutes for an answer to be delivered... ist there within a heart beat...

of course there are many more benefits that I am happy to discuss, once I am not at work (and supposed to be busy modelling 😳 )

I don't know if there is a whole world of SCF waves running out there already. but Craig and I just started a new one to meet some fellow SCF members... its a public wave with the title SCF - a first gathering

      Nice little tool.

But all the messageboxes, can't they instead be made into a single UI.Inputbox ?

I agree with thomthom - on both statements πŸ˜‰
and I think he didn't mean to complain about the few seconds it takes to klick yes or no several times - he is just searching for perfection!

and I think he is right in thinking, that having all these questions together in one popup window would make sense.
I imagine all the options having a check-box to check/uncheck. settings for 'smoothing' or 'intersecting' will be saved throughout a SketchUp session. thus you don't have to deal with these questions again, when using the tool again.
alongside the 'OK' button you would have an 'Update' button. like that you can for example reverse the path direction, then update to view the changes, then maybe change back again and update once more... this would not only make workflow even quicker, but add another level of control to the tool (because you can try different settings over and over again...)

oh, and TIG - the tool is absolutely fantastic! 😍

the same happens when importing from 3Ds Max. lots and lots of unique components. and unfortunately all with their own origin - so 'replace with component' doesn't work...

a script that could detect similar groups/components and replace them (even taking rotation and scale into account) would be fantastis. probably as useful to some as this cleanup script here...

thats a good idea - merging vertices.

I would also like more control over selection options and inferencing. being able to select vertices, edges, faces only would make certain tasks easier.
also having an option to only select visible elements (at the moment if I draw a selection frame, everything will be selected, even if its hidden behind other geometry...).
and being able to switch off coordinate axes inferencing would be great.

and - I think it was mentioned earlier and I didn't really understand the idea behind it 😳 - having a modifier key to lock movement/drawing to a certain plane (similar to the arrow keys locking to a certain axis already). I would implement it like that: if you press the key - no matter if you are in the middle of an operation, like drawing a line - you get a gizmo (not much unlike the rotating wheel). you then click-drag to define the orientation (exactly like with the rotating tool). now the locked plane is shown with a dotted, light grey grid and you can proceed with the operation you were executing...

I do not know any other 3D application (...) whose Rotate tool would be as intuitive and easy to use as in SketchUp.

I totally agree with Gaieus. the approach SketchUp is taking to rotate, move or copy objects is one of the reasons why it is so incredibly fast to model with that application.
although I would appreciate the option to show/hide a transformation gizmo at the origin of groups/components. at the moment you can change the axes of a component (not of a group though). and you can see the axes - and therefore the origin of the component - when editing it. if you move groups/components around however, you don't know where the origin is.
in that case it could be helpful to have a transformation gizmo showing up at the groups/components origin and do all transformations (move, rotate, scale) around this point...
but let me emphasise, that this would only be a nice addition to current tools. for most things however I find the tools to be fantastic as they are...

    • RE: Augmented Reality Plug-in for Google Sketch-Up released

      hi Graziano,

I just came across your plugin again and was wondering, if you are still developing it further.

because as I understand it the current version only supports one marker and one model. but especially to urban planners independent models, asigned to different markers would be extremely useful. just imagine you had several buildings lying on a table and just needed to move them around to play with different arangements.

or the second option would be to use a set of fixed markers in an empty room. when you then move your screen with camera around, you could actually display interior views...

and I just got another, more farfetched idea... imagine you had two cameras in a stereo-arangement. would it then be possible to determine, if objects are in front or behind the virtual model? because if you could actually do that and then create some sort of map that hides the model where real objects are closer to the camera, one could point at the model without the hand vanishing behind it...
I know, probably too complicated to be achieved easily.

and just one last note. I am not sure, if your price policy works out too well. especially with the student version being 49€. I think that is a bit much for a plugin. after all, students are not going to make any money with the plugin and are notoriously short of cash πŸ˜•
for comparison: a student license of SketchUp pro is at 49$

actually, that may be a good idea for a different ruby request... a selection tool, that automatically recognizes component arrays (whether distributed on an even grid or along a path...) and then lets you do various selection scenarios. ideally a dialog would pop up that let you change your selections dynamically (or, at least have an update butten, that lets you change selections without closing the dialog)...

The Bond franchise has always had a sort of "comic book" feel to them, and that's completely gone now.

thats exactly what I meant. and thats the direction most action movies are heading these days. so now they are telling the 'real' story, based on which the 'heroes' of the comics where invented in the first place.

thats bad for you, if you prefered the comics... (and good for me, because I prefer it that way)
