First off let me say that the folk at Chaos have done is an amazing job with this program and the latest updates are more than I ever expected, keep up the good work.

Question I have right now is what I see on the screen and what is outputted in V Ray is different in the first images.

I have had this happen before in previous versions so it’s not something unique to 3.6. I just want to understand what’s going on and how to correct it.

Are you using the latest version V Ray 3.6? ifso your answer is can be found here:
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ_FeuG9WSE

you need to go to your settings tab and pick the GPU button then click on the 3 dots and look to see if your graphic card is showing up there , you can then pick its on or off. when on a check will show up next to name.

"It illustrates exactly the problem I was having. Running wiring around things, trying to have it hug the paths as closely as possible, and not through them."

That's the part that takes a lot of trial and error and time.

3SKeng looks interesting and would work for straight lines runs, don't know if it will work for complicated multi line wiring.

Drawing line in open space is easy enough, but when you need it to conform to specific areas and various sizes and shapes it get to be very time consuming. Part of my job is to create product manuals for our company and details for installation for the contractor, so showing the working of hoses and wires takes a lot of time to do this correctly in and around fixed items.

I have used Max in the pass and I could do the same thing in less than half the time because it’s allows you to change every aspect of the spline anywhere along the way. It would be nice to have this in this program but I make it work as best I can for now, plus I don’t do wiring all the time, it just would be nice to have it when you need it. 😐

I ran the uninstall/install and so far things are fine in the short time I had to play with my files.
FYI and for what its worth I ran the SKU check up before and after and i get the same message.

Thanks Paul Russam and everyone for your help. 'lll let you know if there are still problems later.

      Thanks Paul,
I'll try it and let you know what happens.I will also look at the 1070 as a possibility for my next move. I use Podium and lately V Ray 3.6 to render.

    • RE: SketchUp 2018 Video Card

I typically look at the files sizes before I add them to one of my files and I try and keep them around a mg as much as I can. I typically do interiors and close up of exteriors at home, so I typically don’t need a forest of items. As I said before it’s not been a problem in the past. I’ll have to look at the drivers tonight when I get back home, I don’t remember if I have updated them recently or not.

Would the video card cause SketchUp to perform poorly or as stated earlier the CPU of the computer could be a problem?

      Thanks

    • RE: SketchUp 2018 Video Card

      Thanks for the replies,
Interesting notes on the glitch in the checkup app that changes my thinking on getting a new card.

The problem that I have with 3D vegetation is it takes a long time to import and to save the files. It can take 3 to 5 minutes to save a file, as far as moving the geometry it really slow as well. I am not talking about a huge scene with lots of geometry a bush or a tree or two cause problems. These are the same items I have used in the past in other project with no problems.

This just started a little while ago, I’d say a little over a month or so ago so it’s not just SKU 2018. The computer is a little over a year old and is a desk top unit. It supposes to be a high end gaming machine which in the past has worked well for me. Could it be something in the updates for windows 10?

I use both the Cotty and L i am methods, very time consuming .

I keep hoping that someone will come up with a none destructive spine tool for sketchup, something similar to the way 3D Max works where you can draw your line, add nods along the path and adjust to get the desired shapes. Then you create a thickness to suit your size requirements. The none destructive part is you can go back and make changes later.

    • SketchUp 2018 Video Card

I have been having major file problem especially if I have any 3D Vegetation in my files. I ran the SketchUp 2017 Checkup program and it showed that my current video cards memory is not up to par. I am looking to buy a new card and I have a few questions that maybe some of you can help me answer since I am not tech savvy enough to know even where to find the answers I need online.

      What I have currently:
      NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

What I am looking at possibly buying:
      Nvidia Quadro M2000 4GB GDDR5
      Video Memory: 4GB GDDR5
      Memory interface: 128 Bit
      Max. Resolution: 4096 x 2160, support 4x Display monitors
      OpenGL 4.5
      DirectX 12
      Shader support: 5.0

      Questions:
Can these 2 card work together on my machine for V Ray 3.6? (both are Nvidia cards, the old a GE gaming card and the new one would be a Quadro Workstaion card)? or would be best to pull the old GE Card?

If they can work together will it make any differences to SketchUp?

      My machine:
      Intel Core i7-5700 CPU@ 4.00 GHz
      Ram 16 GB
      Windows 10 Pro
      64-BIt
      x64Bit processor

    • Creating Maps

I am trying to create my own texture maps in V Ray and I am having a problem. I have put a procedural textures "Cellular" in the diffuse slot and it shows up the image in V ray but everywhere else it shows a generic v ray map. When i Render it black is all I get.

      What am I doing wrong?

    • RE: Bitmap size control

This works on the top primary map. in other words if the map is a color or in my case a Rubber material. in VRay i can add a map to the bump slot, but then i have no control of that bump map (that I know of) in the sketchup material window, only the rubber map which is a color only on the material pallet.

    • Bitmap size control

I have attached a VRay Rubber material to my model and in Vrays materials added a bump map. My problem is I have no way to control the size of the output of that map. Its there but tiny, since the main map is a color I have no control on the sketchup side. I've played with the U V setting on the vray bitmap but it does not change it in the view. Is there a way of doing this or do I need to go another route with sketchup and VRay?

    • RE: V-Ray 3 for SketchUp released

Will there be or are there some new tutorial to help get up to speed?
Will the help files be expanded as well?

I've been using the beta version and a lot of in depth information was missing on the new layout and some of the new features.

Congrats to the Chaos team, and thanks you for this new version,
cant wait to get my hands on it.

    • Having problem with scaling in SKU2017

Using the tape tool and picking 2 point and typing in the "Measurements box" a new number brings up the dialog box asking me do I want to re-scale.

Works great in 2016, but the same method will not work at all in 2017, has something changed?
