From some of the comments here... you might enjoy the podcast "Mr. Diety". Others will hate it.

So, I'm sitting here drinking my first espresso and it occurs to me that God must use some kind of theological 'SketchUp-like' modelling program for all this creating he does. Hey, six days is a pretty tight deadline, (there are guys on this forum who have been struggling with a bathroom for weeks). Then, there's Adam and Eve, unless he just downloaded them from some devine version of 'Poser', a snake, dinosaurs, a really big garden...
Whew...I wonder what they talk about on that forum?

      Plot,

      I couldn't resist responding here

according to my theory every being has a spirit, an energy field, that is shaped and influenced in it's quality by emotions, thoughts, feelings.

I think most spiritual teachers / traditions--here I am talking about mystics, not religionists--to make a big generalization... would see it differently. The spirit or soul is usually considered not to be shaped by the emotions, but the individual as a physical being is. On the extreme mechanistic view, we are seeing that simple chemicals can cause radical differences in our emotions. The spirit is considered more abiding.

The Hindus have an interesting analogy. The Soul is the passenger in the chariot of the Body (some might say "Mind"). It is certainly along for the ride. Some say it is "the observer". Intelligence drives the chariot and the Senses are the horses. As you might know from your own senses, it can be a wild ride--they're hard to handle. But does the essential nature of the Soul change so easily?

Buddhist too speak of a state that is beyond this illusion. While they are generally very clear on "be here now", they don't teach that this experience of the emotions is your original being.

Just a caveat, in case you haven't looked into these sort of teachings for yourself yet.

Try a different mouse? I find that if I use my Mac mouse (is it mighty or super mouse?) The scroll will begin to go and go and unless I hit zoom extents I will be in the next county before I know it (digitally speaking).

I haven't tried the ruby myself but I am definitely going to\

I am not sure from your message though, that this is the whole problem. I have gone through this learning process recently, myself. Advice I have gathered here is:

Always leave Layer 0 active. Your drawing geometry will always be on that layer. Group the things you want to hide/unhide and make a new layer, then designate that group's layer in the entity info window. When you add a new layer, it will be visible in all your existing scenes. The ruby is to help prevent that. I assume all your scenes are also set to remember layer setup.

    • "SKETCH OVER" note must always be there?

Is there a way to remove the "Sketch Over" note and red outlines when using a photo-match view? I used the Photomatch to draw a building site with--although I didn't really have to as I had measurements. The main thing for me was to put the building in context. I see the Sketch Over note is gone when I make a .png but is always on the screen during viewing an animation. The red outline stays on the .png.

I made the first actual presentation using SU today on a small project, to a homeowner couple. I didn't render it, just used animation in SU and a couple photomatch views. They were blown away. They loved it, and these are quite sophisticated experienced homeowner/builders. They said it inspired them to move on with the project, which is quite handy for me.

(I will now include one of those obnoxious smilies)

      YESSSSS.....

I am including a picture of the pool house in SU.

I think the photo match images are fine for this sort of job and go along with viewing the model in real time with clients. But long after I am done "sketching over" the photo, the photo background still says "Sketch Over".

Thanks to all the SU demigods, who put this fine software together and the avatars who help people like me, here online!

    • RE: Scale texture on warped surface

      Thank you,

James, I watched the video before but had forgotten it, as I had not come across a way to use it. Now I can. Still I don't know how to "clone a face". There is no clone in SU Help. If I simply make a copy with the move tool the resulting object is the same as any other in regards to how the texture works.

I got what I wanted. I did edit a copy of the texture. Then I put it on a rectangle, and set the texture to projected. Then I sampled it with the paint tool and it evenly covered the warped shape. I didn't like the angle, so I rotated the texture on the rectangle and reapplied. Thanks.

    • Scale texture on warped surface

I have a warped surface softened edges etc. representing an undulating ground. Can I not scale the texture for the whole surface instead of individual planes (as I can do only in "hidden geometry"?

Basically: I am not far enough along to make or find new textures. Using what is available in SU, there are good textures. But they look so small and grainy. A larger scale, however blurred will be OK in the picture.

    • RE: Stuffed

It looks like something someone would actually make. Obviously some knowledge of the real world , how materials work, helps out. I think more of that light from the right, shining a little into the shelf would make it even sadder.

    • RE: First displacement test

I'd say the amount of detail is already more than enough and small discrepancies would be unnoticed unless you were doing a shot from the POV of someone actually standing on the roof. But I suppose an OCD tendency is what drives this sort of craftsmanship.

This stuff is incredible. Like rocket science to a newb like me.

Do you have to just guess what sort of shape the 2d image will make, rendering it over and over until you get what you want? How do you also add color and texture or is it all in the map?

Do these renderers bend light seen through glass (curved translucent objects)? I suppose, since SU is not solid, you cannot imitate the thickness of glass or other liquids.

    • RE: Window cutting problem

Thank you. I added a line beneath the sill. I realized that I had made my component mostly of groups and I don't think that they help describe the cutting plane. I had a hell of a time working out the axes for the first time, even after watching videos. Now have a usable window.

Right, Once I got the component to cut, instead of punching the hole with push-pull, there was nothing at the jambs. I added that in the component too. Fun but time consuming at first (this SU program is).

I think I have most of the questions answered, the rest will fall into place. Thanks Again!

    • Window cutting problem

      Hi,

Why can't the component "Window Case 3" in the attached file cut-out a surface? Note location of axes.

      1. Why when I "name" a component the name does not appear as name in Entity window, but as description.
      2. is it possible to get back to the "create component" drop down window after the component is created. This allows you to do the "gluing plane" visually.

(Don't pay attention to the correctness of the window muntins. I'm changing it!)

      Thanks,

    • RE: Outside vs inside edges - different thicknesses

I tried it with the sandbox with two curves. And due to the segments in the curves, the resulting warped plane had ripples all over as planes were formed from segments on one curve to the other.

    • RE: Only above average IQ people should vote????

I think this is the sort of things the original US leaders had in mind. After all just to vote you had to be a landed white male. They thought you needed something that they (the landed white males) regarded as a sign of substance in order to lead all the others, including women. The result of the system they put in place was to eventually give the vote and other rights to more, not fewer.

That said, I'd like to see the government of this country (USA) run according to the constitution for once. It's the political system, not the law that is hurting us. I'd say not enough people are allowed to vote. Not enough people have access to office. I say the vote isn't fair enough yet. As was shown in 2000, the vote can be taken from all the people.

And there are plenty of very intelligent people who will never have access to office in our two party system as it stands.

Why worry about IQ which is another system of control like the tests once given to blacks to keep them from voting? What about education? If we could educate ourselves decently, we'd be much further ahead. I guess this is an easier solution, because we've given up on education.

People don't use their heads to vote anyway. What are you talking about?

If you are going to use draconian measures, how about REQUIRING THAT EVERYONE VOTES (they may vote for "none of the above") and that they do SOME sort of civil service at SOME point in their lives? As it is, only a fraction of citizens take part in the government. The only thing we are required to do in regards to government is fork over our money.

    • RE: How do you evenly space guide points

Thanks for the tips. There are many commands in the right click that I think I have looked at but actually, no. There's a lot of depth. While I should learn the measure tool the divide ruby looks great, and the divide command will be good to remember.

To show my situation, here are the doors I wanted to make. What I finally did was use lines. I used the duplicate mover /5 sequence and got lines off the jamb. Then I had the size I needed to make the first component. The help here is amazing and it's also wonderful people like Didier are busily making Rubies.

Interesting skyscraper ideas! While I am not expert in skyscrapers, they seem very original.

I like the simple house too in concept. The entry is a bit scary though. there is no landing it feels abrupt. Also there seem to be too many steps. Can't say why I think that, for sure but are they smaller than 6"high? I know it has to Be SIMPLE, but you hope to feel invited to walk to the door too. A matching solid w
