      Hi Dave! ๐Ÿ˜„

Gotta admit, this is freaking me out! No new versions of SketchUp Make??!!

      Say it can't be true!

I opted for a 2017 Macbook Pro by the way! For anyone reading this, I'm still a Windows gal but I had to invest in a Mac for my business!

good luck with the new biz ๐Ÿ‘

I was thinking about the possible increase in my electricity bill today - I must keep an eye on it. Gulp!

Cheers, hopefully Beastie and I will do great things together!

...Better stay with the old Dell because before you start to annoy over this new black slow box, Iยดll come and help you carry that thing into my carยดs trunk - Iยดll take over the disposal costs then ๐Ÿ˜‰ ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Wow - impressive machine

Hey! Haha, thanks for such a generous offer but I think I'll pass ๐Ÿ˜‰

DELL will always have a special place in my heart because I started my 3D journey with him ๐Ÿ˜„ But Beastie is my new BFF, for sure!

Yea, it is pretty impressive, cost me quite a few quid too ๐Ÿ˜•

    • Arrrrgh!!! I FINALLY Got an IT Upgrade!!!

      Hey everyone,

It's been a zillion years from I posted anything in here!

So much has happened in the last year, for starters, I left my nice cushty job to start my own 3D Visualisation business ๐Ÿ˜ฎ and after months of putting it off, I finally got round to organising an IT upgrade, with A LOT of help from one my 3D muckers. Not sure what his username is on here. I'm sure he'll make an appearance on this post!

I had a few ups and downs once the new custom built machine arrived, like erm, it wouldn't work!! I had to send it back and they fiddled with the BIOS settings and then returned it. Thankfully, it's now working like a dream.

I can't believe that my computer has two watercoolers! I find that mind blowing!!

It was built by a firm called Scan and they sent me a cool 'before' photo prior to building it. Which had me squealing like a 13yr old Bieber fan.

      Before Pic

Anyway, here's a pic I took of the inside, cos us IT geeks like that sort of thing.

      Internal Shot

I couldn't physically lift the thing, I had to get my Dad to help me. It's an absolute BEAST!

I tested it for the first time today and at the minute I'm doing a comparison with my DELL laptop.

So there's like a 'render off' going on in my house tonight!

      Render Off

In the red corner (ding, ding) is Beastie McBeastface with the following spec:

Windows 10 Pro 64 bit, Intel Xeon Dual CPU E5-2630 v4 @ 2.20GHz, GeForce GTX 980 Ti, RAM 64 GB, 500GB SSD and 2TB Storage Drive.

In the blue corner is DELL Boy, with the following spec:

Windows 7 64 bit, Intel Core i3, RAM 4 GB

If the laptop performs better, I'll go into hiding and never be seen again.

      I'll keep you updated!

Thank you, it was a RAM hungry scene because of all the displacement but it turned out well ๐Ÿ˜„ That Christmas tree is cool, right?!

    • Top Tips for Interior Scene Set Up

Guys, I'm not sure where something like this should be posted, so I've dumped it in here. I've had another article published in 3D World Magazine, where I've provided my tips (based on my Interior Design knowledge/background) on setting up an interior scene that resembles a glossy cover shoot.

Constructing a 3D model is one thing, making it look photo-real is another. But creating a visually captivating scene is something entirely different.

I hope people find this article useful.

always back up your system... I learned the hard way and lost years of construction documents and 3D models...

buy a terabyte hard drive and partition it with two "drives". E and F... keep a disc image of your OS drive on one and copies of all of your important files on the other.

Keep updating the image and set autobackup for the other files.

When you run into issues... format the main drive and use the image to recreate it.

Building your own computer is pretty easy... I suggest doing so. In our line of work it will save you many hours and dollars.

Thank you for your advice - I definitely need to look at my contingency plans if things go belly up. The thought of losing my work FOREVER is too painful to even contemplate!

There's no way I could build my own workstation! I just wouldn't have the technical knowledge to do that! I wouldn't have a problem paying someone to do it, as long as it was done right!

      Mike,

That sounds like an exhausting process! I didn't used Technicians - I followed my usual process of elimination but I can imagine that Technicians are an absolute waste of time. If I contacted them they would probably have suggested everything I already did.

    • So, my laptop crashed...

I've spent 4 days trying to coax my laptop into behaving and it was having none of it until tonight. FOUR DAYS of tears, tantrums and expletive ridden threats. I haven't a clue why it started, I just know that antivirus scans, malware scans, full disk checks, a defrag, two disk cleanups and countless other rescue attempts failed to find any problem.

UNTIL I punched it in a fit of rage. Seemed to have done the trick.

Anyway, my rage at an inanimate object inspired me to write a blog post. I have a feeling many of you will be able to relate ๐Ÿ˜„

I have been using Simlab's OBJ importer and it is light years better. Imports come in clean, grouped, smoothed, no performance issues. All this time I thought it was just SU not being able to handle the geometry. Never could understand it.

Completely agree, I trialed Simlab and imported poly heavy models and they imported in no time and were clean. Although, I've learned that scaling models up/down helps too.
