So, my laptop crashed...

I've spent 4 days trying to coax my laptop into behaving and it was having none of it until tonight. FOUR DAYS of tears, tantrums and expletive ridden threats. I haven't a clue why it started, I just know that antivirus scans, malware scans, full disk checks, a defrag, two disk cleanups and countless other rescue attempts failed to find any problem.
UNTIL I punched it in a fit of rage. Seemed to have done the trick.
Anyway, my rage at an inanimate object inspired me to write a blog post. I have a feeling many of you will be able to relate

OH, yeah. Right now my desktop is on it's way back after a second trip to its builders for repair. Add to the points you mention.

The technician talks to you like you are five years old, so condescending.

The technician cannot remember from one minute to the next what he said the problem was. First it is a virus and then it is malware.

The technician takes remote control of your desktop and decides without asking that you really do not need certain programs or files and just deletes them. Never again, been bitten three times now and if they demand control they can sodoffski.

After you point out to them the different excuses they have used for the same problem they rescind their earlier sending back of your machine and reinstall the OS, wiping ALL of your programs while asking which particular OS you want installed, Vista home 32? No I want the OS it already has you blithering idiot.

After that they say that they do not know if you have a valid license for win 7 ultimate, despite having reactivated it after the original graphics card failed and was replaced.
I used to think Chillblast were the dogs bits but this latest experience has tarnished that so the chances of another pc from them is very low to zero right now.
Yep, do we not just love technology, when it works.........

That sounds like an exhausting process! I didn't used Technicians - I followed my usual process of elimination but I can imagine that Technicians are an absolute waste of time. If I contacted them they would probably have suggested everything I already did.

always back up your system... I learned the hard way and lost years of construction documents and 3D models...
buy a terabyte hard drive and partition it with two "drives". E and F... keep a disc image of your OS drive on one and copies of all of your important files on the other.
Keep updating the image and set autobackup for the other files.
When you run into issues... format the main drive and use the image to recreate it.
Building your own computer is pretty easy... I suggest doing so. In our line of work it will save you many hours and dollars.

Thank you for your advice - I definitely need to look at my contingency plans if things go belly up. The thought of losing my work FOREVER is too painful to even contemplate!
There's no way I could build my own workstation! I just wouldn't have the technical knowledge to do that! I wouldn't have a problem paying someone to do it, as long as it was done right!

It's not as hard as you think... All the plugs match each other. You can't plug the wrong thing into the wrong thing. There are detailed instructions with every part. If you have the ability to make a rendering program do what you can make it do... I have no doubt you can build a computer.
