If you haven't already done so, pop over to the FineHomeBuilding website and do some reading over there. Lots of good stuff.

There is an FHB related site:

      http://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/book/export/html/14955
      http://www.finehomebuilding.com/PDF/Free/021189072.pdf
      http://forums.finehomebuilding.com/breaktime/energy-heating-insulation/spray-foam-insulation-8

There are different solutions depending on climate. It does make a very tight house which is a very good thing but does require proper detailing and the aforementioned air exchange solution.

If you can afford it, it is the best insulation, it does require different approaches and solutions to ensure you don't have problems down the road. (this is also true of every other type of insulation)

With the metal roof you will likely not have to worry about roof issues but I would want to have an air gap for ventilation to reduce the amount of heat transferred to the structure. There are many ways of achieving this either by adding a second layer of sheathing with a spacer to create air channels or by the traditional chutes on the underside and then spray foam over them.

Creating a complete envelope and having the entire HVAC system in the conditioned space will ensure better efficiency and the sealing and insulation values you can achieve will offset any increase in the volume of the conditioned space.

    • RE: What I love and hate of iTunes and iOS

      I agree, Windows sucks. 😄

Do you really need all of that anti virus stuff on MSW 7? My understanding is its no longer needed with the included MS system. Or is that not true?

Most of those I know who use iTunes on a MSW machine don't have any trouble, perhaps its due their settings for the firewall versus yours.

I do agree it will be nice to be able to sync using a wireless connection but I doubt it will fix your sync problems as it seems to be more the interaction of iTunes and the MSW system.

Glad you enjoy the Touch, I have had a first generation unit since shortly after they came out and my son has two which are great machines. It is amazing how much power is packed into them.

    • RE: Osama bin Laden's hideout in Abbottabad Pakistan

Sadly there are a long line of equally bad people lined up behind him, Bin Laden being killed solves nothing beyond salving in some small measure the pain felt by the families of thousands of victims of September 11. The extremists now have another martyr. Great.

There is nothing to celebrate in the intentional death of any person, even one as odious as Bin Laden.

Everyone in that compound knew they were in mortal danger by being there. They all could have left and lived long lives rather than stay and be killed.

      Snip

As an FYI the ATIs in Macs have always worked well with SU, having a Geforce in my new Powerbook (bought one week shy of the new machines) seems to suffer from plenty of issues with SU which are driving me to distraction.

That was a great documentary. Just an amazing individual. Seeing the different phases of his story was eye opening. I didn't really expect it to go back through him acting out the original attack.

Great photos. Amazing how the mind works.

On the one hand it was a horrifying attack and on the other it set him free of his alcoholism and causes him to create this more articulate outlet for his creativity which likely would have never been seen otherwise.

Very cool. Not sure about the high heels though.

    • RE: SketchUp Stability

Honestly I find it the least reliable of all iterations. I have minimized the number of rbs and it still crashes multiple times a day, for no good reason in most cases ie open a file, spinning wheel of death and it crashes to desk top.

Its still better than the alternatives.

    • RE: LayOut 3: Cannot save file

I just ran into this bug yesterday and it reappeared again today.

I am building a few different objects that share some components. In creating the packages for the model shop I chose to use the same base file and delete out the pages or images I no longer needed or had to change.

In my case it occurred after deleting a page which contained an image that had a mask applied to it. I then went on to do some other tasks and went to save. I got the above mentioned dialog boxes. The first few times I just abandoned the file.

This morning when it occurred again I retraced my steps using the undo command and was able to save. I then tried several variations of deleting the page, deleting the image and ultimately breaking the image and the mask apart and then deleted them. For me unmasking of the images was the key to being able to save. I also tried just deleting the image with the mask and had the same problem with not being able to save. So for me the problem manifested in two modes, delete a page with a masked image and deleting a masked image.

I quit out of Layout and tried using the old files which had the issue to start with, they no longer had the problem.

The next time I run into the issue I will try to find other steps that rectify the situation.

    • RE: Interesting, and probably controversial

The whole Christian nation thing has always driven me nuts. The specific statement about one group being more patriotic than another due to a secondary belief is insulting to many of us.

The current notion of our founding "fathers" being Christians (many weren't, and certainly did not share much with modern BA/C Christians) and therefor intending our nation be such is a bald face lie. They certainly had the opportunity and ability to have clearly and unequivocally stated an intent to make this a Christian nation versus a secular state with no specific affiliation to a single religious body.

At present time 15% of Americans state no belief or affiliation with religion, this number has risen from 8.2% in 1990. I think almost more interesting is the rise in megachurch affiliation which has risen from 5% to nearly 12% over that same period, this move from religions based in a long tradition to what may be more entertainment than religion (clearly my opinion) given what we see of these organizations

I am an atheist but believe in the notion put forth by John Lennon (and inspired by the Reverent Ike, late one night): Whatever gets you through the night 'salright, 'salright, for many their belief is what makes it possible for them to live their lives. I am good with that as long as it doesn't negatively impact the lives of others.

I have always said the pledge in that antiquated pre red scare way. Sadly I must use money, though with the advent of credit cards being accepted nearly everywhere means I rarely carry much of it.

    • RE: The entity info box doesn't completely open

I am having this same issue with my new Mac. Late 2010 MacBook Pro with Geforce GT330M 512mb video card.

Unable to fully access the features of the Entity Info box when any line based element is chosen. One can "tab" to the part of the window one cannot see to change a value (such as the number of segments of a circle) and modify the value there and have it take effect.

One can use the size handle feature to increase the window width but cannot increase the vertical size to be able to view the rest of the window.

I have restarted SU. Restarted the computer. Reinstalled SketchUp. Reinstalled the Mac OS using the combo update. To no avail. My old Mac Powerbook has none of these issues, despite having a paltry 128mb of video ram.

I have submitted a bug report, if anyone else is having this issue please send one in as well. I suspect it is a function of the video card in these particular computers relative to the way this window routine is written.

I have also noticed issues with the way the other windows expand under the other panes versus flowing them downward as a group and errors in them staying docked/stuck together.

      Thanks

    • RE: I-pad 2...thoughts?

I have been using an iPad 1 off and on since they came out.

They are a very different computer. My wife liked it because instead of sitting behind her at the computer and watching TV, I would browse the net alongside her. I would take it all around the house, playing Pandora, using it as an instruction sheet while I upgraded a computer and so on. Today I used a nifty app to take notes while it was recording the audio and keeping a time stamp between the two (you can click on a word and the audio immediately jumps to the audio from when you wrote the word). It was very cool, low key and given that I was only typing key words I could better follow the conversation better versus concentrating on just transcribing. It was intended for students but what a great note taking tool for anyone who does this regularly.

I am likely to actually buy one of this new generation as it would allow me to give my kids a tool that is a very capable computer, a camera, a video camera, a gaming machine and have to buy the software only once across all of the units I buy (likely three). Given how much money I have spent on DS games and so on over the years I suspect I would have saved money had the App store model been around a few years earlier. I know the iPod touch's have replaced the DS with my kids.

I think Apple has really hit on something with the App store for both Mac OS X machines and the App store for IOS, easy to access software, immediate delivery (gratification), use and reasonable licensing terms.

Back to the new one. Its definitely going to be better. Would I like the thing to be faster, have better cameras etc etc? Sure. But having looked at the Motorola and Samsung alternatives, I am definitely underwhelmed by the competition. Its about the software more than it is the hardware at this point in my view. The iPad has the software and the hardware is high quality and the integration between the two makes for a remarkable experience.

My kids spend hours playing the game. Looking forward to the IOS version so they get off the home computers.

It is very basic but they spend an amazing amount of time playing it. Very basic graphics.

One of the same kids obsesses over Xplane mods where the entire plane is modeled down to the operable ashtrays...

This is a very nice addition.

I have tried a couple of files, the first quite simple worked well.

The second caused the program to get into a loop where I had to force quit SU. I am on a Mac.

The file I had trouble with is proprietary so I cannot post it but would be willing to send it to you.

I have seen this one in East Calais, Vermont the next town over from where I grew up.

      P.S.

      The Old Nuisance

It appears on the back of the marker and is quite amusing. I always wondered if it had been put there by a vengeful family member but the reality is Bennet himself had it engraved himself.

    • RE: [Plugin] Hidden Manager (08.Feb.2015)

      @rv1974 said:

Well sorry if I upset you but this manager is rather useless IMHO. Why?
Because your model is itself a manager of your 3d elements. And if you'd turn on "show the hidden geometry" mode you can easily select\unhide\view it's properties without any additional tables.

Honestly this was an unnecessarily rude response. It may be useless to you, but may be of great use to others whose work process is different from yours.

I tend to hide some geometry to work on other items, being able to toggle a specific item into visibility without having to make all of them visible and the attendant slowdown of the program because of the huge overhead increase of all the sub geometry that also turns on when I show hidden geometry is a real boon.

So, thanks for an interesting and I think, quite useful plugin. Great first effort, would that I were able to be able to reciprocate with a plugin of my own. In any case thank you.

All the best and looking forward to your future efforts.
