But, today I was contacted by a plugin user today that reported that they did not have a Google folder under application support, but instead just Google Sketchup 8. (And no plugins folder.)
        library/application support/Google Sketchup 8/Sketchup/

This user was using OSX 10.5.8.

Wouldn't that slash at the end imply there was more beyond?

Does it? I usually append / on folder paths just to indicate the last item in the path is a folder and not a file.

Is a / at the beginning of an OSX path as an indicator of the root a known thing amongst most OSX users? Or is there another convention?

I would read the slash at the end as you do Thomas. It would indicate to me that the last word is actually a folder/directory. As to a slash at the beginning, I would read that as indicating there's more to the path but that part is understood and just omitted.

If I prefixed the path with Macintosh HD - would that be better?

Maybe accompanied with two screenshot - one of the correct path and other of the incorrect user path with a big fat X on it?

i'm not sure how well known it is but yes, a / at the beginning of the path indicates the root volume.. a ~ at the beginning ( ~/library/etc ) indicates the user directory..

do you have xcode installed on your mac? (it's on the original install disks but not preinstalled on the system).. if so, i can help you make an installer using PackageMaker.app

I'll have to look into that. I'm moving apartment now, and having a wee week in London, so it's something that have to wait until later. But I'll give you a poke.

There is a Google folder in my User Library but the only thing in it is information about Picasa
