I just built this system with a RYZEN 7. Great performance for price. A huge improvement from my previous 2011 first gen Intel i7. The new machine boots in 15 seconds! All software works much faster, AutoCad, Rhino 6, etc. All EXCEPT Sketchup. I don't know what the problem is and if it relates to Ryzen, but Sketchup takes almost a minute to load, as does opening almost any SU file. Once loaded, it functions normally. I've removed Sketchup and reinstalled with the same result, even before adding plugins. Again, I don't know if this is a Ryzen problem and should put it to the Sketchup people.

    • Hardware advice reqd.-Architectural design, photoshop +video

I am planning to build a new cpu. I have an old cpu currently with i3 2nd generation processor and 1TB WD hard drive. The hard drive is just 2-3 months old and I intend to use it in my new CPU build.

I do architectural work which involves making 3D models of buildings in SketchUp and still image photorealistic rendering in V-Ray. I also intend to use Revit, Rhino and Grasshopper.

I also do photo editing work in Photoshop and use layout and graphics software viz. Adobe InDesign (used for magazine and book layouts) and Adobe Photoshop. I do occasional video editing that consists mostly of slide shows and the videos are of 4-5 minute duration in Adobe Premiere. I never intend to play any games on my CPU.

My budget is 45000 Indian Rupees.

I have shortlisted the following components.

      1. Processor – I’m unable to decide which model
        a) Intel i5 -8400 priced at Rs. 14890
        b) Intel i5- 8500 priced at Rs. 17500
        c) AMD Ryzen 5 (1600) @3.2 GHz priced at 14,900

      2. Graphics Card – Zotac Geforce GTX 1050 Ti – 4GB priced at Rs. 15,600

      3. RAM stick 1 = 8GB Corsair priced at Rs 6,983
        RAM stick 2 = 4GB Corsair priced at Rs4,799 , so a total of 12 GB RAM totalling to price = 6983+4799 = Rs 11,782

      4. Motherboard = GIGABYTE GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 AM4 AMD B350 SMART FAN 5 HDMI M.2 SATA USB 3.1 Type-A Micro ATX DDR4 Motherboard priced at Rs. 8870 (Check here https://amzn.to/2NiLBgq)

I went to http://thebottlenecker.com to check overclocking information and pairing the graphic card of my choice and Ryzen 5 was resulting in 36 percent bottleneck. I was quite surprised. It is suggesting my graphic card priced steeply at Rs 56,000 and above! Same goes for intel i5 processor 8400 version with the same graphics card and resulting in 33 percent. I have attached a pdf of both the reports.

I have been using Lenovo laptop with i5 3rd generation and AMD radeon 8570 graphics card. I’ve run into some problems off and on with graphics not displaying correctly or facing windows freeze. I am of the notion that pairing an intel hardware with AMD one is not good. Though I’m really not confident about my statement and need clarification with you guys. I also have a notion that keeping all the hardware the same, a pair of intel processor and Nvidia graphics card will perform better than the Ryzen processor and Nvidia graphics card.

I checked out the benchmark scores for intel i5 8th generation processors that I have listed and of Ryzen 1600.
      Intel i5-8400 @ 2.8 Ghz scores 11785
      Intel i5-8500 @ 3GHz scores 12091
And Ryzen 5- 1600 @ 3.2 GHz wins at a score of 12,287!! I so much want to buy Ryzen but need full performance review for it and check for any issues as well.

Please advise about buying the right hardware. I am also not quite sure whether 8GB would do or would I require 12 GB of RAM. For the last 3-4 years I have been using i3 2nd generation processor with 8GB DDR3 RAM and Nvidia geforce GT730 graphics card of 2GB capacity. I am looking for double the speed of this setup. Bottlenecker website is suggesting 16GB of RAM which I highly doubt.

I have also listed Ryzen’s disadvantages from a reddit thread located here https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/720wjo/a_detailed_pros_and_cons_list_for_ryzen/

      Disadvantages
-Worse single-threaded performance Whew, the big one. Ryzen does do worse in single-threaded applications. Intel takes the cake with single threaded performance, but people only want maximums these days. Ryzen has a much, much more consistent gaming performance.

-Ram incompatibility Another big one, Ryzen did have some memory issues on launch, but they have since been (mostly) fazed out

-Less optimization Since AMD’s bulldozer architecture was so terrible, most game developers have optimized their games for intel’s CPUs

-You might run into more problems with ryzen There are some problems exsistent in Ryzen (such as some very select mobos needing a bios update to support Ryzen 5)

-Does poorly with slow ram Ryzen needs fast memory, which adds some to the budget. Not much but still a consideration.

Tom’s hardware mentions Poorly optimized software ecosystem on this page listed below. I don’t know what is the meaning of it.

    • Hardware upgrade advice required

My PC has ECS - H61H2-M2 motherboard. It has 8GB DDR3 RAM. The processor is i3-2100 @3.10 GHz. The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 of 2GB capacity. The power supply is 450W. The motherboard, processor, one stick of 4GB DD3 RAM, power supply were bought in 2011 or 2012. The second 4GB stick of RAM was bought in 2017. I am using Windows 10 pro 64 bit.

The CPU cabinet was bought in 2005 or 2006. I do architectural work which involves making 3D models of buildings in SketchUp and still image photorealistic rendering in V-Ray.
I also do photo editing work in Photoshop and use layout and graphics software viz. Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. I do occasional video editing that consists mostly of slide shows and the videos are of 4-5 minute duration in Adobe Premiere.

I am planning to buy a new i7 processor or AMD Ryzen 7. I want to keep 8GB RAM or maybe I will upgrade to 12 GB RAM.

      I have the following queries.

      1. Which processor should I buy from the following ?
Intel Core i7-7700 Processor 8M Cache, Up To 3.60 GHz 7th Generation which will cost me 24,596 bucks
        https://www.amazon.in/Intel-i7-7700-Processor-Cache-Generation/dp/B01N0L41N7/ref=sr_1_2?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1516977881&sr=1-2&keywords=intel+i7+processor

AMD RYZEN 7 SERIES OCTA CORE PROCESSOR 1700 for 25,088 bucks. Not much of a price difference between the two processors
      https://www.amazon.in/AMD-RYZEN-OCTA-CORE-PROCESSOR/dp/B06WP5YCX6/ref=sr_1_1?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1516978188&sr=1-1&keywords=ryzen+7

Would I require any additional cooling for AMD Ryzen processor as the amazon web page mentions “WITH WRAITH SPIRE COOLING SOLUTION (AM4 SOCKET)”

      1. Should I upgrade my graphics card also? The current graphics card that I have i.e. NVIDIA GeForce GT 730 of 2GB capacity was bought in 2017 only.

      2. Should I buy a new power supply? I recently faced a hard disk trouble (WD hard disk bought in 2012) in which the pins of hard drive got blackened out that rendered it useless.

      3. A friend of mine is suggesting to buy a new i5 processor or AMD Ryzen equivalent instead and buy a heavier better graphic card.

His point is to invest more money in graphic card in order to get better performance instead of sticking to a low end graphics card and pumping money in a high end processor. Is that true?

I am attaching screenshots of my hardware specs, the photographs of power supply and damaged hard drive.

      @tig said:

Normally the shipped Components subfolder [and Materials and Styles too] in the Program Files path is reserved for SketchUp's shipped files only.
Permissions are limited and the intention is that you set up your own subfolders for these file types in your own USER path.

Typically these might be like this...

      C:\Users\USER\Documents\SketchUp\Components
      ... Materials
      ... Styles
      etc
Useful for sharing across multiple versions.

Alternatively consider using the USER's defaults...

      C:\Users\USER\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2017\SketchUp\Components
      etc

This is where the USER's Plugins folder lives etc, version by version...

Also the USER's Templates and Classifications are in there too...

The AppData folder's path is hidden by default, but changing Windows Explorer > Folder Options lets you see it...

Thank you 😄 . Now I am able to access them quickly. 👍

I have pasted my components library here.

      C:\Program Files\SketchUp\SketchUp 2017\Components

However when I go to components window, they don't show up. Sometimes I have to go to the "Open or create a local collection option" to open my component collection in the above mentioned path.

I have also mentioned this file location in Window>preferences>files>components.

What should I do to get quick access to my component collection?

      I am using Sketchup 2017

    • RE: Annoying progressbar popup

      @tig said:

You have installed files into a folder that is NOT the default Plugins folder.
The folder you listed is actually in the ProgramData folder tree, which is intended for users who want to share the same plugins - the contents of this folder load as well as the user's own Plugins folder...
Normally only higher-end apps - like renderers etc - use an installer exe which places these shared extensions in that shared location...
      C:\ProgramData\SketchUp\SketchUp 2016\SketchUp\Plugins

To check your default user's Plugins folder, try this snippet in the Ruby Console + <enter>
It opens that folder for you...
      UI.openURL("file:///#{Sketchup.find_support_file('Plugins')}")
      It is typically:
      C:\Users\YourUserName\AppData\Roaming\SketchUp\SketchUp 2017\SketchUp\Plugins

An issue like you report can arise because sometimes scripts look for their 'helper' files by assuming that they are in the default Plugins folder - using something like the find_support_file method in the snippet above, to 'load' it [rather than the safer 'require' method].

Since that 'progressbar.rb' is NOT in that exact Plugins folder, then it fails to load.
So move it into that folder and all should be well...
If there are any similar error messages, then moving the reported files to the default Plugins folder is again in order...

You are usually best off keeping all of your plugins in your user's default Plugins folder.
That is where the built-in Extension Manager automatically installs the contents of any RBZ files.
As said above, some 3rd-party installers use the ProgramData tree...
Using a non-standard Plugins folder location requires care and attention, unless you have an excellent reason for this I recommend you avoid doing it !
Why make work for yourself ?

Thanks a lot! Initially I copied my plugins in the plugins folder located in the appdata. After that I was getting error in loading v-ray as the vfs.rb file was located in the C:\ProgramData\SketchUp\SketchUp 2016\SketchUp\Plugins. It was by default installed by v-ray installer and I did not move it there.

Therefore, I moved all the plugins to this programdata location. That fixed the v-ray issue but initiated the progressbar issue.

Now I copied the progressbar.rb file to the plugins folder located in the appdata location. The error is gone now.

Now, this is an unconventional way to fix this trouble and seems unstable as well. Is there a better way that I can keep my plugins installed in the appdata location and still not run into the error for loading v-ray?

    • Annoying progressbar popup

I usually copied the plugins folder from my plugins backup folder in my external hard drive and installed the plugins by pasting them into the plugins folder whenever I did a clean install of windows. I just separately used to install vray and everything ran fine. Downloading individual plugin from plugin store and other websites would be a lengthy process. Copying the plugins folder saved time.

Yesterday I did a clean install of Windows 10 on my PC and installed Sketchup 2016 pro.

Today I started sketchup and I am receiving the following popup
      "Please install progressbar.rb from smustard.com"

I get this popup three times and I have to press OK on it. Ironically, I already have progressbar.rb in my plugins folder located here.

      C:\programdata\SketchUp\SketchUp 2016\SketchUp\Plugins

I also downloaded this rb file from Smustard today and pasted it in my plugins folder but the problem persists.

What should I do to resolve the error?

Using Windows grep application, I searched for the appearances of progressbar.rb in any rb files and I got the following results.
