    • Hints given by SketchUp

      Hi folks.

The following 2 hints are obvious for experienced SU users but may help beginners.

It pertain to observing a zone that seem invisible to many beginners with SU, the left part of the bottom of the model window where SU is showing the user what to do which is also called the Status bar (See the help).

      Hint number 1:

Place the cursor over each tool and observe what the status bar is showing.

      Hint number 2:

When using a tool, observe what SU is showing in each step of the operation.

The following hint pertain to observe the pop-up messages that SU is constantly showing when you place the cursor over an Endpoint, a Midpoint, an Edge, a Face, a Center, an axis like "On blue axis", etc.

      Hint number 3:

The trick here is to take your time and give enough time to SU to be able to give you the required pop-up message. Normally, the pop-up is showned in less than about half a second.

So, my advice is relax and let SU help you. Dont rush. The few seconds you think you are saving by rushing are more than wasted by the time you will take to correct mistakes and repairing bad geometry.

Of course, reading the help and viewing all video tutorials, especially those for SU 5 are mandatory to grasp all the power and flexibility of SU.

Have fun and experiment. Dont forget that you can UNDO or reload a previously saved file to recover from a bad experiment.

      Just ideas.

    • RE: Changing layer visibility in several scenes at once

      Hi folks.

      I would try these steps:

1 - Set your layers visibility as you want it for all the Scenes to be updated.

2 - Open the Scene manager window.

3 - Click on the first scene.

4 - SHIFT click on the last scene to select the whole bunch.

5 - Click on the Update button (the two circular arrows chasing each other).

6 - In the pop-up window that appears, check only the Visible Layer property.

7 - Click the Update Button (the one with the Update text).

In step 4, you may omit the last scene to avoid having to come back to this scene and setting the visibility of the last layer to on.

      Just ideas.

    • RE: Canuck at Home

      Hi Alpmeadow, hi folks.

I mostly use SU to present concepts to customers or work colleagues as well as to produce 3D illustrations to add to my calculations briefs.

I also use it quite intensively to produce tutorials that I post in a few forums dedicated to SU, including, of course, Skectchucation.

    • RE: Construction Point at Origin can not be done > Why?

      Hi folks.

I reported this a while ago (at least two years) when I discovered that a "Point at center" could not be placed for a circle (or polygon) centered at the origin.

I was told that it was logged as a problem.

I just checked and this problem is still present with the latest build (6.4.245 on Mac).

      Hi Simon, hi folks.

There are an infinity of arcs that can be drawn if only the length along the circumference is know.

You also need either the radius or the angle.

      You can use the formula : ARC = R * A

Where ARC is the arc length, R is the radius and A is the angle

See attached SU file for ideas.

    • RE: Noobie to Sketchup, Painting Models

      Hi Mike, hi folks.

      1 - RESIZING

After bringing a ship in your model, make sure it is in a group and resize it. If not in a group, group it first.

To resize, go inside the group with a double click on the group and use the Tape Measure Tool to measure a line of known length. Observe the length shown in the VCB. If not correct, type over the required value and then validate with the RETURN or the ENTER key. There is no need to click in the VCB since it is active as soon as you start using any tool.

SU will ask if you want to resize the active Group/Component. Click yes and then exit the group.

Repeat for any additional group (imported ship in your case).

If you dont use groups, SU will resize the whole model which may be OK for the first ship but will probably be not very good for the next one.

Of course, all this assume that your ship is actual 3D geometry and not just a picture. However, imported pictures can also be resized using the same measuring tool. And, since they normally import as groups, it saves a step.

      2 - COLORING

See attached SU file for ideas. Note that you can modify existing colors by editing them.

All this and more is in the help.

    • RE: Champ angulaire

      Bonjour.

      Question 1 - Champ angulaire.

      Salutations.

    • RE: OK, I give up

      Hi Bungo 198, hi folks.

To add to the already good advices already posted, I would simply add two things:

1 - Play with SU, drawing anything that comes to your mind. Start with a simple cube add add lines to it. Push and pull any new surface to see what happens. Try regular polygons first and then modify them, a little at first and then more boldly as you get the hang of it. Try starting in Top view or Face view. This will ensure that any polygon will be on the same plane and will close. Make sure you start with an empty file each time to avoid unwanted inference.

2 - Always read the line of text that appears on the left side at the bottom of the model window. It always guide you as to what SU is expecting you to do.

    • RE: Peut-on désactiver le "Snapping"?

      Bonjour.

You can use scenes to focus on each part. You can even print the scenes to scale if you use standard views (top, face, back, right, left, bottom) and disable perspective.
