I know what they mean and your demo is not it.

You draw a rectangle, you push/pull it, you draw a rectangle on the wall, you push/pull through to the other side. Instead of it cutting a window it leaves it filled in with a face. If delete the face it deletes the entire face on that side. When you draw a line along the window edge it fills in the face and leaves the window empty.

I have no idea what causes it or how to replicate it consistantly but I just work around it.

I havn't used groups or components

My question is, why not? Groups and components are the single most useful time saving feature of SU. Even if I only have one of them in the model I create a component of it. If at a later stage I notice or a mistake or want to change it in some way:

      1. Insert another copy of the component
      2. Edit it, sometimes this involves scaling it up 100x
      3. Delete it
Any changes made to the copy, excluding the scaling, are reflected in the one within the model and it did not move.

When I was looking to buy a new laptop last year this is what it came down to:

      1. $4000 Apple running Ubuntu Linux
      2. $2000 Dell running Ubuntu Linux
It was not a hard decision.

GO to Window>Preferences>General and make sure the bottom check box is ticked. It enables SU to warn you of changes to the Style.

Ta da.... and now the penny drops as to why I do not get the warning. I just knew it had to be a tick box that stops annoying messages. It is a habit of mine to disable any warning messages when possible. I have been bitten once or twice instead of annoyed thousands.

No matter what I try it does not give me that warning. Can some one post a step by step guide?

Here is an example of a template saved without updating the style. Take a look at how the style icon looks in the style browser and also try to add a scene.

I downloaded and used your file as a template. I see the two arrows in a circle, I do not see the warning dialogue box when I add a scene.

Wooo hoooo I figured out how to create your own custom template without Bruce or that stupid ruler and to have profiles turned off. Heres how:

      1. Open a new file.
      2. Delete the ruler/Bruce.
      3. Turn off the profile.
      4. Change any other settings.
      5. Purge the unused ruler/Bryce.
      6. Purge the unused materials.
      7. Go "File -> Save as"
      8. Browse to your Template directory, by default it is "C:\Program Files\Google\Google SketchUp 6\Resources\en-US\Templates"
      9. Give it a custom name, mine is "8th inch no profile"
      10. Go to "Windows -> Preferences"
      11. On the left select "Templates"
      12. From the drop down, select your new template.

[Edited: The purge steps were after the post by Dave R]

I'm missing something. What stupid ruler? I've certainly know Bryce from the default template but am puzzled by talk of a ruler. Is it a feature of the free version of SU?

No, you get the ruler instead of Bryce if you use a Template like "Inches (Woodworking)-3D".

      @dave r said:

To get rid of it, you need to Purge Unused components and materials.

Oh yeah, forgot that, I will add it in as a step.

      @sorgesu said:

Next time you use the same template and add a scene it will ask you again.

Now I am confused because I just added several scenes and not once did it ask about updating the style of the scene. Does that dialogue box have a "Don't show me again" tick box because I probably did that.

It is a work_around that should be done easier in the next release, really Β‘

You consider that a work around? I call it standard for almost any program. It's just the way that program operates and should operate. I just figured out how SU did it, cobbled together how from various posts and experiments. I then posted a step by step guide instead of just saying, change it in your template.

An example of a work around is, you reboot the computer after printing an Excel spreadsheet that you print on a single page. The program and computer should be able to handle that task with no problem what so ever. Sure a reboot fixes it but you should not have to.

I would rather something that is Open source or at least free. Since the Quake 3 game engine is GPL I live in hope that one day someone will develop a GPL SU to EXE convertor.

... then there is a the Curve Stitcher plugin.

      1. Select the 2 curves,
      2. Plugins -> Curve stitcher

Just be aware that it stitches from the start of the curve to the start of the other curve, so if you do the arcs in opposite directions you can get shapes like this

    • Model to EXE wish

I would love to be able to create a model and then export it to a standalone EXE. That EXE would allow people to 'walkthrough' the model just like you do in a First Person shooter such as COD4.

You would move around with the AWSD keys and look with the mouse. You could walk up and down stairs and doors would be in a special mode so that you could walk through them but not through walls.

It could even be made so that you could hit the space bar to toggle between walking and "flying" mode.

God! it feels so restrictive to write in these parameters. Now does that makes u feel comfortable. May i know about you Hazza!

I am a 38yo male, married with 2 kids and I work as an electronics technician with a defence contractor. I love learning and sharing knowledge. I have taught myself many programs including Linux, GIMP and SketchUp. I have created and shared many GIMP scripts, I pay for the hosting of http://www.osphoto.org. I give lifts to hitch hikers, I volunteer at the kids school whenever I am at home.

I may have come across a little too strong about the spelling and grammar, I appologise. The reason I did so was that I have a strong belief in the power of language and communications. The speed of progress of humanity is DIRECTLY linked to our ability to share knowledge. The most effective way to share that knowledge is the written word. To see the blase attitude and butchery of the language by the SMS culture today is frustrating..... and turn that dam music down!!! πŸ˜‰

What you fail to realise from your self centered view is that I AM trying to help you.

The people on this forum are not paid, they spend their time on here willingly helping out those that ask. See it from their point of view, one person asks a question in a clear, concise easy to understand polite manner. Another 13-16 yo selfish "the world OWES me and should get with the times" comes on and their question needs putting through a CIA decrypting super computer to be understood.

Which do you think they are more likely to answer? Which one are you more likely going to answer?

I don't need the cutlist but it helps.

BTW I found Canadian Home Workshop magazine web site here, it has woodworking projects that meet my needs but there are alot of "projects" that aren't woodworking specifically.

First problem you should work on is your spelling and grammar. Install Firefox it has a built-in spell checker. It can't make you use the Shift key to put capitals though. You are a very Important person so If I was you I would make sure people knew It.

I know that your SMS buddies could easily understand what you posted but reading it gave me a headache.

    • Looking for good wodworking plans

I enjoy converting woodworking plans to SU models. Some of the best plans to convert are ones from Popular Mechanics magazine.

Does anyone have any other sites that have free plans that are good enough to follow. I really prefer plans that have a cut list as well as a diagram with dimensions.
