      Amazing stuff i'd love to see a video of it in action.

      Does anyone use the 3D program used to make this - Lightwave 3D from NewTek? It sells for $895 - not bad for how cool it looks. I'm just mainly curious, I guess...

      Another quick'n'easy way to speed up modeling would be to put major sections of the model on different layers, then hide all layers but the one you are working on.

      You can use scenes to save multiple styles in the same model.

    • RE: Bad News for Architects in the next ver. of Google Sketchup

      I bet the focus on Collada is for Google's O3D project!!! πŸ€“ O3D allows interactive 3D content to be run in a web browser.

      Google puts 3D on the web, and it's no joke
      Wednesday, April 22, 2009 2:10 AM

      ...There are a lot of folks who believe it is time to create a standardized, open, and general purpose way to put 3D graphics on the web. O3D is Google's contribution to that ongoing discussion. Our goal is to make the next generation of browsers support 3D "out of the box," and Google SketchUp's long term vision of "3D for Everyone" will be one step closer!...

      @unknownuser said:

      Google's O3D API is an open-source JavaScript API for creating interactive 3D graphics applications that run in a browser window and targets web developers comfortable with Javascript and having some experience with 3D graphics. The sample COLLADA converter will let you import content from applications such as Autodesk 3Ds Max, Maya and Google SketchUp.

      I'm just questioning the choice of export option here...

      I think they are going after the gaming, art, and film markets which seem to be gaining share on the original architecture market:

      @unknownuser said:

      As it turned out, folks wanted to use Google SketchUp models in all kinds of crazy ways. Things that we could never have imagined! We decided that Google SketchUp users should be able to export their models into some easy-to-read and fundamentally hackable file format to make this easier. Your models should be yours to do with as you see fit.

      If I may....

      I just watched the video, read this thread and I have a few questions and observations.

      Thanks for this assessment of the the video, Pete. As a rendering newbie, I was wondering what to make of the the 'tutorial'. Judging from the quality of your renders in the gallery, you clearly know what you are talking about, and this helps me alot.

      I was also wondering who makes models like that clock or well from the video πŸ˜•
