I think the most useful slope would be the maximum value for each face, something like the magnitude of the gradient: "it has the direction of fastest increase of the function at P, and its magnitude is the rate of increase in that direction." [Wikipedia]

You probably assigned the texture to the component from outside and not to the faces in that component directly.

To get the face, the rectangle should be in the same context, you can copy and paste in place it in the cylinder group/component and do the intersection there...

Have you deleted the inner faces in your example?

You can use the path select tool from SketchUV (no automatic angle, but more manual control for difficult meshes). Or a similar tool from ProfileBuilder 3, if you have bought this great plugin.
