    • RE: Steelblue 3d interactive holiday card

Hrm...perhaps not traditional easter eggs but lots of little things going on and added bits that you probably wouldn't catch right away. The Hollywood spotlights are animated, for example. And you'll find a teddy bear in the trolley. Also, many of the objects have some meaning related to the Transbay Transit Center which is why the Golden Gate bridge, Hollywood, and some other regional places are included. πŸ˜„

    • Steelblue 3d interactive holiday card

Our company just released the holiday card we created for the Transbay Transit Center. It's an interactive 3d video which allows you to look around the space as the animation loops through. To my knowledge no one has really done anything quite like this before. There are a lot of little 'easter eggs' around the space so be sure to let it loop through a couple times. πŸ˜„

Has anyone developed a plugin that'll let you export only the selected geometry to collada format?

Probably need to look a bit more but it didn't look promising. The impression I get is that anything would be very low poly.

    • Highly detailed 747-400 plane model?

I'm trying to help a friend find an extremely high detailed model of a 747-400. He's got a chunk of money to buy it but I didn't see anything on the usual sites. It needs to have all of the flaps, landing gear, and preferably interior modeled.

Anyone have a good resource for something like that?

    • RE: Save layers as individual files?

Actually that doesn't seem to do what I want TIG. I'm not really wanting to "export" so much as "save". Since you can't export .skp files the script doesn't seem to work.

Basically I've got a nice layer setup in SU that I'm wanting to bring into 3ds Max. Max imports .skp nicely but doesn't handle the layers all that great so I'm wanting to save out each layer as a file and bring them in separately in Max.

haha, thanks TIG. I've never had much luck with Sketchucation's search algorithm, and this time Google didn't do much for me either. Heck, even knowing the name of your script, it's a bit difficult to get it to come up in a search.

Anyhow, thanks for the script πŸ˜„

Is there a way to save layers as individual .skp files? Is there a plugin out there that does this currently?

    • Follow-me with a line instead of a face?

Is there a plugin out there where I can do a follow-me sort of action but instead of a face, i'd like to do with with a series of lines and curves? (More like a 'sweep') So if I were building a column I'd draw the profile, draw the circle of the column, select the profile and sweep it around the circle.

You should also look into Direct Folders. http://codesector.com/directfolders

Pull out to approximate size [using any modifier keys you desire], then immediately type in the required size, before selecting another tool.
The length has to have a 'units suffix'.
Type 13 will make it 13x bigger ! but 13" makes it exactly 13 inches, or 330mm which makes it exactly that size in mm, this is done irrespective of the model's current-unit settings...

Nice tip, I didn't know that one. πŸ‘

      So many SU easter eggs.

This is also a question, based on the above.

Using SCALE, you can just type a percentage value in the VCB. This is handy to set a specific scale factor like 92%. It is also handy to set a scale factor that is between SCALE's preset snap tolerance of .1% so just type 90.15 in the VCB where SCALE snaps only to 90.1% or 90.2% and you need the precision.

OK, my question, How do I set scale to a dimensional value?
ie: my object is 12 inches, and I want it to be 13 inches, without doing the percentage math. AND I am holding the CTRL and SHIFT keys down to scale all and from the center. When I release the mouse button to type, my position is lost.

Make sure your object is a group/component. Double click it so you're inside the group and use the tape measure to measure your 12" segment. The VCB will report back that it's 12". Now just type 13" and hit enter. A dialogue will pop up asking "do you want to resize the active group or component?" Hit yes and you're home free πŸ˜„

This works wonderfully when you get a 'not to scale' drawing that you need to be to scale.

      1. import and handle large .obj files (trees, hedges, etc.), is this even possible for SU in next 12-24 months? or should I look into thea render, since I use SU+vray only.

VfSU is being prepared for beta - it will get proxy support like VfRhino.

Thomthom, can you flesh that out a bit more? Are you talking about something like Maxwell's references which live outside of a SU file, or would the high poly geometry have to live within the file being rendered?

      -Brodie

Proxies - references to external files.

That's wonderful news. Do we have any idea of a timeline on this or how to get into the beta? I also wonder what sort of file you can reference. For example, I wonder if I can reference .max files.

Yes, the .floor and .to_i are Ruby elements. Sorry I didn't realize we were discussing Dynamic Components.

You're bringing me further down the rabbit hole, ".to_i"? What's that?

If, as a test, I input...

      =100.floor

...into the LenX box, it gives me an error (not really an error but it doesn't seem to know what to do as it reports back "#=100.floor". Likewise, when I input your code it also doesn't seem to work.

    • Can you round in 30" increments?

I've got a component that I want snap in 30" increments when I scale it. Right now I've got

      =NEAREST(CURRENT("LenX"),60,90,120,150,180,210,240,270,300,330,360,390,420,450,480,510,540,570,600,630,660,690)

...but that's pretty messy and limits the sizes. Is there some way I can use the ROUND function perhaps (or something else) to just tell SU to snap in 30" increments?
