      Found a cool one today.

Copy a line over and type 6" to set the distance. Then type *10 to array it 10 times.

What I already knew was that you can type *8 or *4 or whatever to adjust the number of arrayed items.

However I just found out that if you then type 3" or 10" it will keep your array but adjust the spacing. Pretty sweet!

    • RE: 3DS models increases file size, drastically .

Pretty much the same rules as making any SU model smaller. If it's a repetitive model you can turn geometry into instances of eachother. It depends entirely on what's making the file size so big though. Maybe you can post a screenshot of the model.

Just to update, sdmitch revised the script a bit and it's working wonderfully for me now.

Thanks, sdmitch was kind enough to lump all of these into a single plugin for me. Unfortunately, although I think his plugin is sound, I believe the bug within the component/group tools plugin is causing the whole thing to fail.

It runs through the loose geometry to groups plugin great but then when it comes to the second plugin it runs into the error where it will often only make a few groups into components rather than all of them. After that nothing really happens and re-running the master script doesn't seem to do anything. Until the error is fixed in that script I fear the issue will persist.

If anyone has any ideas, I'm open. Until then I think I may be stuck running through the scripts manually.

    • RE: [Req] Make groups from connected geometry

Thanks pjt, that actually helps quite a bit! I wonder though if it's possible to sort of merge them into a single action that would run through each of those processes. I've tried it before with no success, hoping that it wouldn't take any real ruby knowledge. Is that possible with your script? As far as I can tell it lumps them together in a nice tight location but you still have to run them separately, yes?

      Thanks, very helpful!

I wonder if there's a way to sort of combine all those rubies into one in order to simplify the process.

For those who come across this later here are the relevant details from the Catchup article...

      Use Loose2Groups ( http://www.smustard.com/script/Loose2Groups ) /creates groups from loos geometry

Use Component/Group tools ( http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=17590 ) Convert in Single Component option /changes all groups to components

Use Component Comparison ( http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=30143 ) Similar Objects -> Replace Similar Objects / Makes identical components, components of eachother

      Run Purge All ( http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?t=11758 )

    • [Req] Make groups from connected geometry

Here's my situation. I'm exporting .dae from 3ds Max into SU which works great but imports as a single object. However even if geometry looks connected it's not, so I can triple click a table leg, for example, and it won't select the table top. I can then group that, triple click the top, group that, etc.

What I'm looking for is a way to automate that process instead of having to manually triple click a face and group each piece of geometry.

Does anything like that currently exist or can someone think of a possible solution? The next step would be taking the geometry that's identical and making it components but first things first.

Rich, with sightspace if you don't do anything special to the model does it bascially just give you the same look as from within SU, or is there some sort of rendering going on?

When you go from bookmark to bookmark will it pan around as it does in SU or is it just snapping directly to that view with no transition? And then from that bookmark I guess you can move around from there?

    • Can you view Sketchup on Ipad?

I think there are a few solutions for viewing 3d models but I wonder if there's an app or anything that preserves the Scene views which allows you to view SU models on the iPad.

    • RE: FREE Maxwell Render for Sketchup (free version).

Yes, I don't believe the real-time engine can do that. With the full version, however, that is able to be handled during the export process.

I don't speak from experience but I don't see why the two would cause a conflict. You can save a copy of your plugins folder just in case though. If it causes an issue just go back to the copy.

      @unknownuser said:

Not sure I follow, if all scenes are set per the 15 options..........updating the model in LO should allay all concerns.
Or are your concerns about the time/power required to render/update?

Yes, that will get the job done, however after I create the sheet once I expect many of the options will go away, some more will crop up, and some will be revised. Ideally I could just tell each page to turn on/off a layer as these things happen. Having to go to each box and update the means doing that maybe 45+ times when revisions are made.

    • Toggling between options

I've got to set up a series of sheets for a product that may have 15 options to be reviewed and revised. So I've set up a sheet for one option and within the .skp file I have alternative options on their own layers with a Scene for each.

I can duplicate the layout page, go into each window and change the scene. However that can take a long time for 3 windows on each page of 15 pages, and as the design is revised it could get messy. Also if we want to move one of the windows I'd have to replicate that change manually on each page.

Is there some more flexible and faster way of doing this?

    • RE: Viewport performance

The scene is no longer useful in v8.

Your GPU handles textures and styles while 1 core of your CPU handles geometry. So you want a good reliable GPU and a CPU with a high clock speed.
