Ben, look at my example of roof tile above very closely - you will see that you should use a TINY .bmp... I mean TINY.

Then scale the mesh that is generated UP in SketchUp, then PROJECT your texture DOWN onto the face. Be sure the texture position is set to PROJECTED.

Remember that BLACK is the lowest point, and WHITE is the HIGHEST point on the final mesh... so make sure to create your displacement map appropriately... a sketch like that is not likely to give you the exact results you want... depending on what you want I guess.

Thom Thom, I used your plugin to helpme create this image... thanks again! πŸ‘
It is KEY to use a very good displacement map and very small resolution.

Fletch, thanks for the reminders. The bmp was a scanned in sketch that I tried. Perhaps not the best to use. Thank you anyway.

I will try the resampling. Any idea why the image gets turned around?

Got a screenshot? I'm not sure if I understand what you describe.

Thomas, thanks for your help, I can't seem to recreate that scenario now, but here's what happens when I try to project the texture above it. I get bits and pieces onto the mesh.

Thomas, I love it. I have the mesh made, but struggling to find the right image size to make the mesh workable. I've broken the image down into 6 parts and I have a mesh, but can't get a texture applied. SU crashes.

I've been able to apply the texture when it's grouped, but the image gets applied rotated 180 deg.

So, for anyone, is there a way to simplify the mesh first? Would that actually help in applying the projected texture?

    • RE: Lines won't break a face

Thanks everyone for your input. I understand more of what's going on now. Unforturnately, I didn't draw this from scratch, imported CAD files and now trying to make faces where there aren't any. It's been frustrating to say the least.

I will try the tip to scale things up Wo3Dan. I do have the stray lines script and will try that again too.

Thanks mac1. No you didn't destroy my model. No worries.

      Thanks to you all. Ben

TIG, yes, I wound up erasing those hidden edges and it all works now. Thanks for the help.

      Ben

      Ben Some other suggestion.
Get out of the low resolution architecture units so you can see what is going on. Some of the vertices are off the ground plane by ~ 0.0000007 inches. Once you get that corrected you will have less problems!!

Flatten model will behave much better for you http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=e1c834d5c372a69e9f30f02514717f00

mac1, thanks for your tips. I went through the "flattening" process twice, I thought. Anyway, how did you find out that the vertices are off by that amount?

Can someone tell me whether or not this used to work without putting the hidden components or groups on their own layers? I'm almost certain that it did.

The intersect with selection worked, but it created all these hidden edges, that's all.

      Thanks for your help.

And, if they are co-planar, why won't they automatically cut the face? I've been using SU now for quite some time and have never understood some the these apparent quirks.

By the way, if I select "Intersect with Model" I get an entirely different result, why is that?

      Thanks

      TIG,

I forgot to try the Intersect with Selection command. When I do that however, I find that it created many hidden lines however. Doesn't that mean it's not co-planar?

    • Lines won't break a face

I have a situation that is driving me batty. I can't seem to break a face when drawing internal lines within a certain face's perimeter area. I get faces on top of one another instead.

I've tried all the cleanup scripts including flattening the lines and faces, but can't seem to get this to work right. Any suggestions on what to look at next?

      Thanks. Ben

Thank you everyone, I will make sure the max texture size is checked and will try to downsize the image first.
