@mtnarch said: After what we've seen in Haiti, is this really how we (as not only architects and engineers, but also building designers) should be presenting things? Hi Alan. Yes, of course it is. Buildings collapse. It's as simple as that. We also have earthquakes in Britain, we've had a couple of tremors recently, but they are so very slight. Smoke or dust is a theatrical thing, remove that, because you don't want to upset others, and you start going down a very slippery slope (pardon the pun!). Britain is full of ghastly 1930's 'horror shows'. They are bland, and often take on a pale, watered-down reflection of the Arts and Crafts movement from the late 1800's. I don't need to know how smoke is made any more (Unity 3D does it really well, and works great with SketchUp too!), but if you watch the narrative of this visualisation, it's about clearing old ground for new. Yes, there is more than a passing resemblance to the terrible scenes in Haiti, but life has to go on in other parts of the world. Where perhaps we should be projecting our skills as engineers and architects are through providing skills to prevent building collapse because of natural causes, such as earthquakes and severe winds (like tornados) for eg. In 2006, a large (well for English standards anyway), passed over this part of Birmingham, uprooting trees and tossing large vehicles up into the air, but many of the building structures were left standing, because they are made from brick. The devastation you see in places like the USA, is because the majority of buildings trashed by high winds are mobile homes and timber frame structures. Maybe this is for good reason too, because it is a lot cheaper to replace and/or restore. Is this (the latter paragraph) what you were getting at? As I said, we don't really have a problem with earthquakes in Britain, so it is far easier to get away with buildings, built in the way that a company like Sainsbury's would have desired. Does that make sense? regards, Tom

@daniel said: The sad truth is that a lot of people hit by the bad economy are drowning their sorrows in alcohol. It's a 10-year record-breaking trend: Liquor sales in Ohio reach all-time high for 10th year in a row. But I'm sure there is some truth in in the thought. Personally, I only drink when I'm at home and not asleep.

I'm afraid I'm not as good as Oli at photoshop - true result- but rubbish compared to some of the scores that others are getting on the site.

@pmiller said: I remember a real tornado in Montgomery County PA (near Limerick, suburb of Phila) back in the early 90's. It ripped aluminum siding from industrial buildings, drove a sofa through our office block wall, and killed a family with a baby. They found the baby's savings bond far north in Allentown, PA. Scary, more powerful than most can imagine (the aluminum siding was actually torn, with rough edges!). Hills and valleys don't guarantee protection. Yes I remember that one. It was 1994. I was living in Pottstown at the time, less than 15 miles away. It was a rather flat stretch of land where the thing touched down...thankfully it didn't take out the power plant! I remember the severe hail that hit with that storm too. Winds were 150-180 mph. Found this on youtube - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBfXgZfXcVc We haven't had any severe tornadoes since, but we have had some scary green skies during severe thunderstorms. Paul, I see you are in Glenmoore. I live right outside of Morgantown. Seems we are not so distant neighbors.

Is there any architects on here seeking paid work to design a room or a small home? Simple floor plans to start and then more.

Thank You Mike! I am interested toward this technology, but in a world that stills need paper for offices I'll keep on the sidelines. I just hope none of them follow my new signature rule though...

Ok, it's called the Antarctic Snow Cruiser, and although it had a number of innovative features, it was also a total failure - getting stuck in a relatively little amount of snow and abandoned. No one is quite sure where it is today - it could still be buried under the snow where it was left; or it could have drifted out to sea and sank when the ice shelf it was sitting on broke off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antarctic_Snow_Cruiser http://blog.modernmechanix.com/2007/08/26/planting-the-stars-and-stripes-in-the-antarctic/

Looks like the beginnings of a Gene Roddenberry food replicator from star trek http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Replicator As Jean-Luc would always say "tea, Earl Grey, hot" and out pops a steamy cuppa tea
