Here's a way you could do it using Shape Bender.

Chris, as always- great scripts and great video tutorials!
I had a DUHHHH moment when i saw you use the erase tool to UN-smooth geometry! Didn't know you could do that- i thought it could only smooth it πŸ˜„

    • RE: Windows 7

My beef is that the menus don't scroll in Sketchup- I have so many extensions that they need to scroll to fit on my tiny 17" monitor, but they don't scroll automatically; i have to click a down or up arrow to get to my off-screen extensions.
Worse yet, i can't change the Win7 system font size to my liking- they only let you go down to a 9 pt font!!! i want 7 or even 6 pts. and the DPI control doesn't help either! I need a registry hack for something i could do natively in XP and Vista. 😞

      reinstall? πŸ˜„

dunno, that would drive me nuts too.. fwiw, the spacebar works fine for me.

maybe delete the preference list and relaunch SU? (user/library/preferences/com.google.sketchuppro7.plist)

      or,

delete the shortcuts plist? (user/application support/google sketchup 7/sketchup/shortcuts.plist)

[edit- oh wait, did the spacebar act like that since you installed sketchup or did it start acting up after a while?)

It only started acting up weeks after install- but i'll try the preferences thing out and let you know.... thanks

    • Spacebar woes

When you press the spacebar you should get the select icon. When i press spacebar, however, it brings up the model properties. My shortcuts are set to the default spacebar activates tool-select, so i am stumped. I'm on a mac running SU 7.1
      Any thoughts?

Thank Jeff- i'm having a look at it right now.. i wish i had a photo, but no luck. This looks very close to what i'm after...
      Update:
Okay, okay- i can see where this can go.. i am prepared to spend as much time on this as necessary. I must know it! Back to it- thanks for the starting point!

Well I'm at work now, and dug up this old file. It was imported into SketchUp as a dxf file from a cad drawing. I had it in Vectorworks, but I can't remember the actual source, sorry.
I guess if anything it shows it can be done one way or the other, and it wouldn't surprise me if some of the talent on this forum could accomplish it in SketchUp.
      May be a good challenge.

Thanks- i hope to be one such talent once I can figure this out... i have a few ideas now- will post whatever i come up with.

Thanks guys- i am on a Mac so this program doesn't help me. I could use it in Parallels, but I really want to use SU for this. I have all the extensions you could ever need for this and i am inspired by the organic models i've seen here.

Thought i'd jump into organic modeling by trying some "classical" details. This is a lamp i'm trying to model. But i'm already stuck... anyone want to take a shot at this? I've highlighted the first bit that has stumped me.

i still have faith in Google- they are still developing SU- good things happen slowly. And they are still offering a free version! can't beat that with a stick.

    • RE: Can we select by layer?

      @honoluludesktop said:

Perhaps I don't understand the question, but why can't you simply turn off the layers you do not want to see, then work with whats left? This works unless the entities are part of a component. In that case you edit component, then turn the unaffected layers off.

      This worked- of course!!!
You can't select by layer unless you're in an active group or component, and all my objects were groups or components. I'll have to give a look at Layer Manager!
      Thanks all
