See- you model something and it teaches you more than you could have anticipated! Thanks for all the FLW lore and rendering insights

Nice looking model and renders. My brother and I were discussing that very chair. He's seen the original which is made of cherry and is apparently very rough with screw heads sticking out all over the place. The backrest would be a difficult thing. 1/2" thick and unsupported over most of its length. It would cup like a soup bowl unless it was quarter sawn but quarter sawn cherry isn't very pretty.
Thanks for link, too.
I have never seen the original- how funny that it is so roughed up. I can't imagine the backrest would hold up to much; FLW was moving from architecture for people in a direction that has since taken many architects to a place where architecture itself is the formal end.
Thanks for looking -
RE: Frank Wright Chair

RE: Caleidos4D 2 Sketchup
Will this run on a Mac? if so, we're glimpsing the future of a new version of SketchUp.

So far your first one Adam is my favorite.
There's a nice warmth and atmosphere to it...i'm cooking a Thea render that i hope has some of this quality...but we'll see.

RE: Frank Wright Chair
I like the render, Massimo. I used a CRF and white balance that made mine look very warm. It's nice to see the unadulterated colors

So, Troy, you model a Robie House chair, but not the house that goes with it? How lazy can one get?! So far looks great (despite the bare setting).
who says i haven't?
okay i admit i haven't....
utter laziness has caught up with me.
For now here is the overall view. and the .skp- enjoy

Frank Wright Chair
Looking through the Historic American Building Survey online I found some plans for this chair from the Robie House, 1909 by Frank Lloyd Wright. I assigned it as a model to build for my SketchUp students, then set about to modeling it myself. I found that the plans, sections, and elevations were at odds with each other so ended up just making my best guess. I rendered it in Thea with no pp at all. I need to use a better wood texture: i'm going to try one of the Thea materials next.

RE: [Plugin] V-Ray Tools
okay- i am an idiot- i had forgotten to go into preferences and uncheck Vray in the extensions... well you know the rest. DUHHH... how many of these moments am i going to have this month??

RE: [Plugin] V-Ray Tools
No, i just opened the Ruby Consol after SU started and didn't see anything.
There is permanently a check beside Load Vray on Demand, if that gives you any hints... I try to uncheck it and nothing happens. -

Does this count as a duhhh moment? -
Magic ROTATE tool- HOW do you do this??
Have a look at this clip- can anyone explain how he gets the Rotate Tool to flip up in the z axis like that (without referencing a surface in the same plane) in order to rotate flat geometry that is lying on the xy plane?
Do you follow? He the rotate tool never flips up like that for me- it stays flat on the same plane as the geometry. I always have to make a cube so i can reference a surface, holding the shift key to do what seems to just happen magically here.
HOW DO YOU DO THIS?

RE: [Plugin] V-Ray Tools
I'm running 1.48.83 vfsu on my mac and vray toys doesn't work. Under Tools, there is a check by Load Vray on demand, but vfsu still loads. ?? any ideas? thanks! I used the great plug to prevent the extra time it takes SU to load. I miss that now.
