    • RE: Layers vs. Components/Outliner

The reason why I work with layers is because if I work with just groups and components and I hide them and I turn on show hidden geometry you still see the geo from those hidden groups and components. There is a function with which you can hide the components not to show up, but this is not possible with groups.

    • RE: Click-drag-release vs. click-move-click

I dont know never really tought about it but now when you mention it, I use a click move click normally, but when using push pull, follow me, scale, and offset I use click drag, mustve transferred over from other 3D programs.

My advice use whatever comes natural to you and don't think about it.

    • RE: HELP ME!!!!!

Nice model, though going by the level of detail and nr of poly's used on just the barrel you might want to go low poly next time, these should be through the roof. A game like cnc3 would never be able to handle that. πŸ˜› as for the logo I would go with a texture.

    • RE: Hm..

A pool then you want it to be transparant dont you? And you probably want to cover a big surface with texture?

First you got to make sure your texture is tilable in that case, next thing you do is in the material editor you create a new material, load the texture you have for the (I assumed) water and set the transparancy to 50% or so or what fits.

After that it's just a paint bucket and click job.

    • RE: Curved or Arc Steps

Well basically the difference between a face and a surface is that a face consists our of one polygon, a face can also be called a poly.

A surface on the other hand is as it says a surface and can consist out of multiple face's or polygons.

I hope this helps, if not perhaps you can attach the .skp of the stairs and show us what you mean.

    • RE: Hello all

Basically all you need to realise anything in 3D are these things:

      • top view

      • left or right view (left and right in case of asymmetry)

      • back view

      • optional: 2 (preferably more) perspective shots: these can be pictures or whatever. These are not required but do make the process much easier.

Modelling a boat is similar to modelling a car:
I learned to model cars in 3ds Max though the same modelling techniques apply to sketchup:

There is a great video tutorial I learned this off I would recommend before starting on organic modelling such as you are now:

      Hope this helps.

    • RE: Savings images as jpg or tiff - best quality A4 size

Hmm with AA off and quality max Skethcup starts pulling a no show at 7000 px wide and 5000+ high (3:4 ratio).

I have no idea why SU is beeing so difficult over this though, I got a pentium IV 3.4 gigaherz 2 Gig ram it should tackle that without a sweat.

    • RE: Savings images as jpg or tiff - best quality A4 size

You can actually export to a 4000 px wide jpg with max quality? Because I know that the SU limit is 9999, but when I try it creates an error on anything above the 4000

    • RE: Savings images as jpg or tiff - best quality A4 size

Hmm the quality loss of a jpg is minimal imo, if you work with programs like Adobe Photoshop CS3 also if you are going for such quality you are probably going to print in which case you are already screwed seeing SU exports as RGB instead of CMYK often resulting in a big loss of brightness. But one thing you should always do is export on a bigger format than the one you want to print on and resize after. Always gets a better result.

I was wondering though what is the maximum export size for the people on this forum. It seems that my max is 4000 px wide 😞

    • Windows Lost

I seem to have lost several windows: the layers menu, shadows etc.
I can see them when I move my sketchup to the other screen they quickly reappear and dissapear. But I can't move or touch them.

Anyway to reset the window locations or something like that?

    • RE: Anti-SketchUp! Snobbery [or Ignorance?]

This just tickles my nerves, SU is a great tool and although the interface is easy and it's available for free that does not mean that it's a kid's tool. I have had enormous discussions with the informatics staff at my uni over this.

They stick to maya for the sole reason that it is the best program for architectual visualisations. I disagree. Getting the interface down in maya takes you much longer than it would in SU. And the beauty of this all is that 90% of the architecture students DO use SketchUp in their design process. Eversince SU became big SU became the design standard.

The second argument they claim is that all presentations look the same. Again a false argument. Kerky, Vray, Podium and SU output combined with PS create numerous different results. And architecture students prefer these tools over maya and their mental ray. Why? Because 90% of the students use these tools so you can help eachother (shared information among peers is much better than a small staff knowing the program through and through). And these tools are much easier to master.

So if anyone comes to me with these arguments I just refer them to this:

      A list of my models

And the gallery of this forum.
I must say that usually shuts them up quite fast.

    • RE: Some .vismat files here...

Have you seen the displacement option now that really dazzeled me, it actually creates geometry from a displacement map (you can often use the bump as a displacement map)

Top ones are both displacement maps with different settings,
bottom left one is just bump, bottom right is displacement.

      How cool is that??

    • RE: Ross's Blueprint style

Its subsciption based, 16.58 $ a month and you have a download limit of 30 models a day or in other words you can download 900 models a month so 0.018 $ per model and youre in for a year.

      https://www.formfonts.com/pricingSheet.php?superSite=2

More than worth the money if you ask me.

(btw models, textures (we also have an insane texture library), styles all count as the same)

    • RE: [Tutorial > Modeling] Droop ended table

      An addition to this:

When you create the tangent corner parallel with the leading edge, try to match up the number of segments with the segments of the cruve, and manually connect them later.

It creates a smoothing Sketchup understands better and makes adding detail later (rounded edges or whatever) much easier
