sorry... but every time i read this topic title i have to laugh... it's really a big joke that this annoying little problem is still not fixed after such a long time!
If this is such a hard thing to do, the developers of nearly all other softwares i know must be real geniuses since they found a solution for this "unsolvable" problem...

RE: SU 9 Wishlist
Yes, maybe it's not easy... but it looks like it will be the only way to get real perfomance improvements in future versions... since this is the way CPUs evolve since a few years.
And even if it is not possible to use multiple cores for modeling or geometry display, it could be used at least to speed up "closed" operations like rendering images or saving in the background. It's really a joke that you have to open multiple versions of the same file to speed up rendering an animation (i found a limit somewhere at 8 instances...) - why can't this be done internally?!?
btw... i would really like to hear the explanation why an autosave takes 10 times lomger than a normal save... really annoying

RE: [Plugin] CameraKeyMaker 1.0 (Update 2011-04-09)
Great plugin! very nice!
but... any news on this fov problem?!? with a camera always jumping to 30ยฐ fov it's pretty useless for me... -
RE: [Plugin] Selection Memory
WOW! This sounds great! I have to test it...
thanks!!! -
RE: $500 for inference engine plugin
+1 for a simple snap toggle like in acad
and i still don't get it why this is so hard to implement...
but for me the even more important and useful "feature" (lol interesting view... function deactivation as a feature) would be the ability to disable the axes snap (ortho) only! -
RE: Do This Right Now!!!
i'm sorry to hear this!
I don't know, what software you are using to recover the data, but normally it should be possible to recover everything if it is "only" formatted and not overwritten with new data.
I had good experiences with GetDataBack
http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htmGood luck!
And yes, you're right: backup, backup, backup!!!
Last year one of my external HDDs (1TB!) died because off a corrupted usb-chip (btw. stay away from the newer Western Digital external 2,5" HDDs! They have no SATA interface anymore, but an usb connector directly soldered on the board and the data stream is encrypted - no chance to plug it on a SATA cable if the usb chip fails!!!) After this experience i'm now copying ALL my data on my server with data HDD in RAID1 (mirrored) and i have two seperated external backups from this partition, one of them stored in another house!

The angle of view remains constant (but setable) and so zooming was handled by moving the point of view. By doing this, as you zoomed closer you would move through the wall into the interior
and this is how it already works... maybe you tried to zoom with the field of view tool

RE: Autodesk 123D
yes, it has some very nice features sketchup is missing... interesting development. I have to test it...
Very sad that the sketchup core modeling tools and functions are almost on the same level as in sketchup 4... no real improvements on this part within the last 5 years... -
RE: 0.skb, 1.skb, 2.skb files.....
no space left on your stick?
i get these numbered backup files when a volume is full and the autosave fails -

I'd do the CPU upgrade. That'll help with both SU and rendering so it's money well spent.
I'd pass on the GPU upgrade. I don't think you'll see any difference at all unless she's also interesting in playing Skyrim on that PC.
If you can upgrade the RAM later (for cheaper) I'd do that. You can start with 4gb and do some occasional checks while she's working in SU or doing a large render to see if she's using all 4gb of RAM. If not, you just saved yourself a bunch of money. If she is using it all, just buy the other 4gb at that point.

+1
i would do the same...
the i7 will give you a turbo speed of 3,8GHz on one core compared to 3,4GHz turbo of the i5
2GB video ram won't give you anything for sketchup i think
and the ram upgrade is just LOL!!! $200 for 4GB?!? WTF????? this is just insane... you can buy more than 32GB of 4GB sticks for that money... -
RE: Graphics Cards please ?
http://www.cgarchitect.com/news/newsfeed.asp?nid=4960
The fastest sketchup card seems to be still the old Geforce GTX285.
But i would suggest a GTX560 TI 2GB. I have one too. Works great so far and power consumption is ok compared to the high end cards -

Something which sketchup does by means of Artisan and the bevel/round corner plugins...
This is no SubD modeling... no quads, no SubD-levels or base mesh, only one way...

RE: [Plugin] QuadFaceTools
AAAHHHHHHH!!!
just watched your last three videos... the new functions look fantastic!!! unbelievable to see this as a ruby in sketchup!!!
thank you very much!i'll try it...

RE: SU 9 Wishlist

native sub-D modeling with quads
-
snap toggle (on/off)
(and - as usual - better texturing/unwrapping features, multicore support, faster save times or save in background, fixed toolbars)

RE: Geforce 560 ti or 550 ti?
I would say yes! I recently switched from a Radeon HD 5770 to a GTX 560 TI 2GB and it looks much smoother to me in Sketchup at 2550x1440.
But i have to say, that i'm still working with Sketchup 7.1 - i tried v8 but it's slower for me! It switches back to wireframe navigating on scenes that work smooth without degrading in v7.1. But that's only a side note...Here is a comparison of the cards (gaming benches)
http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/2011-gaming-graphics-charts/Enthusiast-Index,2674.htmlIf you look where the 550TI is listed, it's at the same level like a HD5770, so it should be nearly the same difference to a 560TI.
But i think sketchup is still very CPU dependent... so it would be helpful to buy a 2500K and overclock it to 4-4,5GHz.

RE: SketchUp and Windows XP [64 bit]
it's not only the look... it's more comfortable and has some useful features - e.g. better wifi- and network support.
If you wan't to buy a new license now for aworkstation, i would say get win 7 x64! Better take some more Ram if you need it - it's cheap now!
