@unknownuser said: Looks as if I have lost the ability to make components. Recieved the following error code, however, not a bug splash. Google I hope your out there. Thanks in advance for your help. Ken Ken, Unfortunately, this is a very generic error message that is generated by the Windows runtime system, not by SketchUp. It may reveal a bug in SketchUp, but it also may be a configuration problem with your machine. I can try to look into this, but I need a lot more details. What version of Windows? What version of SketchUp? When did the problem start occurring? Have you upgraded the system recently or installed any other applications? (That is important because another application might have accidentally modified the C++ runtime libraries, which would adversely affect SketchUp). Please also provide a specific list of steps to perform that result in seeing the error. If possible, save the model before you perform the action and send it to me in a PM so I can try it on our systems. Thanks, Andrew

@sceyefeye said: ...haven't tried this, but what about putting on an turned off layer? That works. When you import a Google Snapshot, the 2D Snapshot image and the 3D Terrain are also locked and placed on their respective layers and the terrain (by default) is hidden. The Toggle terrain button changes their visibility but you can also do it manually.

Well I loaded and unloaded scripts until the date error disappeared. However, right now I forget what script was the cause. I know that does not help much. I remember that I could not find out what the offending script did. I will look into my old scripts directory when I get home to see if I can find the offending script. Should be home by middle of June. One thing I did learn, that removing a script might make the problem go away, however, reloading the script may not bring back the problem. Right now, I am having problems with and error on components making, I have went though all my scripts, and found that a section of five scripts may remove the problem, note, it doesn't seem to be the same 5 scripts, but removing each one of the five will not give the same results, in other words make the problem go away. It is hard to track down an offending script. Right now, I need to get something done, so I just make sure I make the entry into a group before I make it into a component. My work around this problem. Ken

Yep, that did it. Thanks for the info. I knew I had seen option that somewhere, but just couldn't find it again. Now, someone with clairvoyance just tell me when I moved that slider. Thanks for your very quick reply. Ken

OK, not sure what I did. However, I have been trying to learn how to make DC components. Sketchup was shutting down every time I tried to scale the Google fence DC component, and I thought because I had some how changed the formula in the picket section this was causing the problem. However I now see that was not the case. I went to purge all components in the model. Sketchup flashed an on screen error message and shut down. The message was to fast these old eyes, so I don’t know what the error was. So I started Sketchup again and while I was working I was using a components directory call rigging, and when I wanted to go to another component directory I notice that all of my components directories, even the directory called rigging had been erases on the hard drive. The component directory was empty. Note, using Vista, which I do not trust. I have back up on back up. However, I could still get the recent component directory open, and pick a rigging components. Now, where are they being stored? Sketchup was now stopping when I did any scaling on any rigging component. So I did a repair install. But still having the problem of Sketchup shutting down. Can’t seem to be able to get rid of the recent directory of rigging components. They don’t show up in the Sketchup 7 directory. Found out that Ver 7 was using Ver 6’s rigging component directory. Renamed the directory and it stopped showing up in recent used section. So now, everytime I purge Sang, Sketchup stops. Also, I don’t remember that the component directory had to get online to Google to down load the basic set of components. As I remember, once they were downloaded, they stayed on your computer. Not now, I have to down load again and again the basic components from Google. I pass this along, because if you don’t have your components backed up, they may disappear. If I can’t get this resolved soon I will need to go back to Ver 6 to finish this project. Any help would be appreciated. Ken

I have tested things on XP and Vista and it is fine for me. I did have a think and I might have worked out what is going on for you. Would I be right in guessing that you create DCs, which work fine, then to save them you go to File => Save ? If you do this then your DC will not work. You have to go to the component browser and save from there. This is because when you access the Component Options you are only looking at the top layer component, in Component Attributes you see the top two layers. If your DC was saved within a model, when you import that model will be seen as a component containing the DC you were after. If you saved within a model more than once, or put your DC within another component, then you would see nothing in Component Attributes. You actually can alter the attributes of things beyond the first two layers, if you edit the component and select the Attributes from in there. I think that is probably what is going on, but if not then maybe you could post an example of the problem that we can take a look at.

@catalyst said: Hi danbig, You need to open your SVG file with inkscape. Go into Inskcape's preferences Under "Tools" select "SVG output" Under "Path data" - uncheck "Allow relative coordinates" Right below that - check "Force repeat commands" Be sure to save the new preferences by hitting the little triangle-in-a-box button in the top right corner of the preferences window. Once you do that, you can save Plain SVG files and import them successfully into Sketchup for further manipulation. I HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY IMPORT A PLAIN SVG FILE INTO SKETCHUP MAKE 2014 USING THIS METHOD. IS THERE ANY ADDITIONAL STEPS I NEED? GOAL IS TO INPUT A SVG FILE (THE WORDS "PEACE" "ON" AND 'EARTH" WHICH HAVE BEEN TRACED AND WELDED TOGETHER IN TO THREE INDIVIDUAL SVGS.) OF A WELDED WORD INTO SKETCHUP AND EXTRUDE IT TO MAKE A 3D 'BOX' ABOUT 2" THICK.

@jim said: As a work-around, you can create a rectangle anywhere - it does not need to be attached to your unfold geometry - and select it as the last unfold plane. Jim Yep, that what I do now and it does the job well and quite happy with the results. Thanks for the script Ken

Do you have a 'compatibility files...' area on the top bar when you open the folder where they should be ? Sometimes Vista moves files into special sub-folders 'to protect you'... It happens to me when I tweak a ruby script but when I run it the old version runs because Vista's put the new one in this stupid folder so I won't do anything bad !!! . Good luck...

I believe I just didn't understand how layers were working with components. I have now done more testing and I think I understand how and when layer will stay and leave. So, I guess it was me, just not understanding. So now I have been adding alignment lines and faces to my rigging components. Most of my rigging components are organic like in construction, no flat faces or easly obtained alignment references. So now I am adding these faces and lines and making them all active with my Align-Hide layer. So thanks to everyone, I now know how to make the alignment faces and lines stay in compontents and still be on their asigned layer. Thanks Ken
