Yeah, that's the problem, I need to run heavy models with decent resolutions, I need a beefy 1080ti at the minimum for smooth navigation, untethered means no beefy GPU.

For quick and easy testing I still use the Rift & Gtx1080. But the Quest is replacing my Go for taking my projects to clients.

The Quest won't be sufficient at all if a gtx1080ti is needed. Running heavy models can be done up to some point - you'll just have to put in a lot of time though to make it work; reducing shaders, reducing the amount of individual objects etc. Here's a nice small tech video on developing for the Quest https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvMQUz0g_Tk

Some people are developing tech for streaming the VR images to the GO/Quest from a powerful desktop (google for a video on 'ALVR' for instance). You need a 5Ghz wifi. I tested this with Google Earth VR using the Quest - it works ok-ish. I do see much potential for this if they keep developing (early alpha at the moment) - the headset would be just a 'dummy' and the heavy lifting would be done by your powerful laptop/desktop.

It works fine with unreal. Process is the same as for the Oculus go - Just with a bit more power. Edit: its Android based.

THE big plus to me is untethered, 6dof and reasonable good power (maybe 1/10 of a gtx 1060). Also very easy to take to meetings.

Whenever SketchUp has trouble snapping points during moving/scaling etc I temporary use BackEdgesMode (shortcut 'k' if I'm not mistaken). Works all the time.

I always try to make it easy on the plugin and make it into separate lofts. One for the inside, one for the outside and seperate caps. Finally, add them all to a new group and explode the lofts. Doing so is also more easy tracking down bugs.

"SketchUp Make isn't getting any younger. We've stopped updating SketchUp Make"

I think this should read "You're running a 2015 version of SketchUp and we want to move you over to something that you will have to pay for."

Its a valid remark if you're making money using Make. For hobbyists, who are happy with the 2015 technology, its pestering.

So apparently old Make(s) got an update to display this new splash screen without you knowing it?

They call it a pointrelease. Just feel the difference (the previous one was only 4 month ago)

      I use Unreal quite a lot. I note a big difference in my experience with UnrealEngine & Epic compared to SketchUp & Trimble;

      • Open communication at Epic. There's even a roadmap on Trello you can read.
      • A good bug reporting mechanism at Epic. You get a notification if a bug is reproduced and logged. You can even track if/when it will be fixed (target release).
      • Regular bug fixes at Epic. They have teams that develop the engine AND teams that make commercial products using the engine (games like RoboRecall, Fortnite etc). So they eat their own dogfood and nasty / annoying bugs get fixed quite fast. Compare that to SU.. its day & night 😞 πŸ˜’
      • Exciting new features are added all the time at Epic. I think they can't afford not to in the games industry. SU is another thing. Still...at the time Trimble was proudly announcing !! we have dashed lines !! Unreal for instance relatively quietly released their first implementation of Real Time Raytracing - its a first step that could be big for archviz. So yeah .. dahsed lines were quite underwhelming to me...

It isn't always perfect at Epic though - features sometimes brake, the documentation is always outdated, and when using the latest build, you quite often have to look on the forums to solve problems. Still - I far more prefer the energy, ambition and communication over at Epic.

Using a software day after day with long time annoyances and stupid delays for basic operations wouldn't happen over at Epic. The devs would get slapped in the face by the teams that have to develop the games. Meanwhile over at Trimble... 😠

    • SU 19 - Outliner glitching

Anyone else noticed some strange behavior of the Outliner in v19?
In v18 there is a only brief glitch whenever you enter / leave / create a group.

In v19 its really clear and a much longer delay. It happens when: moving stuff - a group or even a single edge, entering or leaving a group in the viewport, adding a group, deleting loose edges or a group, changing the view to another scene.

I use the outliner all the time so closing it for doing even the basic stuff is no option. Its so annoying I'm thinking about sticking to v18.

I'm curious if someone can confirm this behavior or if its something wrong on my setup. See vid (actual speed)

    • RE: Sketchup to STEP or IGS

      In my notes I read:

      • I used an IGS export plugin. Its quite old already (my project was early 2014).
You can download it here https://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=43307

      • the resulting igs file had to go through Heekscad before my client could open it in their igs/step software.

Hopefully the exporter works fine on your 3d model.

    • RE: Sketchup to STEP or IGS

I tried this once. Have to look at my notes tomorrow. Dont expect anything usefull from tbe import though. It will be raw geometry without any logic/attributes etc in the mesh. You probably will have to redraw everyting in the software you are trying to export to.

when do you think they will end classic / perpetual licensing?

I wouldn't be surprised if v2019 would be the very last perpetual version.

      • On the official forum its almost business as usual.
      • The SU team doesn't address/respond to users concerns on this issue for a few days already
      • On the official website the old pro (classic) is still in fine print burried down the page.
      • When viewing on a mobile device, you won't see the classic version at all.

So 2 weeks after launch - nothing is changed and no signs something will. I'm not very hopeful..

      Have you considered a eGPU?
I have a laptop with egpu and its great to use for gpu rendering.

+1 I also use an eGpu so there is gpu power when I need it and when mobile it runs the embedded chip.

Using a gtx1080 in a Sonnet Breakaway box. Plus side is: you can upgrade the gpu so maybe buy a less powerful gpu now and upgrade later when you have won the lottery.

Make sure you get the Sonnet that has enough power to fit your needs.
