The 2010 Google Mapper/Modeler Summit

Geo-modelers: Join us in Zurich!
10:20 AMThere's a growing community of people who have taken it upon themselves to model the whole world in 3D. Some are using Google SketchUp, some are using Google Building Maker, and some are using both together. There's a also a growing community of people who are using Google Map Maker to author and edit rich, 2D maps.
We decided to host a mini-conference that will bring 2D and 3D geo-content creators together for the first time: The 2010 Google Mapper/Modeler Summit is scheduled to take place on March 22 and 23 in Zurich, Switzerland. We're keeping the attendance small (fewer than a hundred people) to encourage conversations and dialog. In the same vein, the format for the event will be "unconference" -- specific session topics will be decided at the Summit, by the attendees themselves.
We have places left for geo-modelers: If you're an experienced geo-modeler who would like to attend, please fill out this form to request an invitation. Since spots are limited and there's no charge for participating, we ask that you provide the following two pieces of information on the form:
* Collection of models: A link to a 3D Warehouse collection that contains geo-models you've built and contributed * Brief statement: A short paragraph (3 or 4 sentences) that outlines what you hope to gain by attending the conference. Please also mention any special knowledge or skills you might be able to contribute.
Questions? Please use the Comments feature of this blog post, and we'll provide whatever answers we can.

RE: A legal question
Do a Google search for "copyrighting knowledge". It returns 210 results. Now just imagine how many hits you'd get if it was possible to copyright knowledge.
Just laugh at him if he comes back at you again. As long as you aren't using any of his materials you'll be fine.

RE: SKETCHUP QUALIFICATIONS / CERTIFICATES
@unknownuser said:
in order to make this product widely accepted within the market place, someone will have to come up with some sort of a certificate or qualification in order for the industry to take it seriously.
I don't agree. I don't think a Certificate in Sketchup Competence would make any difference in how the industry perceives SU. I think the industry would probably just look upon such a course as a useless qualification.
I think that companies that use SU won't care about the certificates someone holds. I think if they are looking to hire someone for a job they will just ask for examples of their work. A competent SU user will be able to show their competence with high quality SU models, aligned with the brief they were given.

The car was introduced at the VW stockholders meeting as the most economical

I guess my biggest criique is the way some of your trees move...they look kind of awkward with that sort of movement to only some them.
I thought that it looked like invisible people were shaking the trees at random.

There's no doubt it will make a ton of Money, but I still don't think that'll make Cameron "King of the World" again (He does tend to over-hype himself.) Other similar Movies that also made a ton of money: Transformers 1 & 2, Twilight 1 & 2, The Polar Express, (Yecchh) The Star Wars Prequels -- don't get me started on those. . . .
After 17 days in release, it became the fastest film to reach $1 billion in box office receipts, making the film the fourth highest-grossing of all time, and the fifth to gross more than $1 billion worldwide.

RE: A couple of TwilightRender renders...Update 01-26
Not really understanding the wall in front of the house. If it was a house on a city street, yes. But it just looks wrong when the house is in that setting.

RE: Freebies
Having downloaded the Bricks and Concrete Textures, I'd say they are priced correctly.

RE: Avatar - A new Era of Cinema begins
I want to go and watch it in 3D, but as I wear glasses I'm wary of whether the 3d glasses will work properly over my glasses. Has anyone used the 3D glasses as well as their normal glasses?
I tried using the free glasses given away for Channel 4s 3D week, but they were a complete waste of time.

if your council estates are anything like ours then any smooth surface gets covered in grafitti pretty quickly and these houses are a grafitti artists dream.
I disagree.
It may be the case that a cheap and nasty council estate finds itself plastered with graffiti, but I don't see this is a cheap and nasty council estate.
I might be wrong, but I think if that building was built it would be treated with a fair amount of respect.

Looking good Oli...but do the cars have to jump the curb to get up the driveway? ...looking forward to the rest...
I hope you don't drive a car if you can't tell the difference between a driveway and a pedestrian path.

RE: GE Modeling Jobs
I'd say 92% are done by SU users for free. 6% done by in-house Googlers, 2% commisioned.
Complete guesses based upon my time searching the warehouse.

Its ok
But can you load it up in the 3-D ware house? I hear some people have models that are up to 1G in size there!
There's a 10mb size limit for the 3DW.

RE: Can I have this for SketchUp Please?
A $1,000 plugin for a $3,500 piece of software. Would next week be quick enough?

RE: Grey Textures in GE
I think the problem is that Google Earth is displaying two, or more, models at the same time. It is displaying the building because it's on the 3d Buildings Layer, but it's also displaying extra models that you've either placed or downloaded and they are clashing.
If you click on Show Sidebar and then uncheck the problem model you'll probably see your model displayed perfectly. It's probably best to then delete all the contents of that model from GE.

RE: How would one model this?
Subdivide and smooth, but use it only on three sides of the shape. Make it a bit larger than you need, then use large boxes to intersect with your shape to make your S+S shape have square edges that connect with the rest of the building.
