    • RE: SketchUp in Cloverfield

A friend and instructor of mine worked heavily on that film. I will ask him.

As for my own experience I have seen sketchup used on big budget films, games and TV spots. There are people in this industry using SU for some AMAZING design work, pushing its limits much farther than I thought possible. From sets to vehicles and other crazy things. I wish i could say exactly what, but I don't want some lame hollywood lawyer after me. πŸ˜„

If you want to see raw SU models in use, check out the book 'Art of Mass Effect.' Also, many times in this industry, a sketchup model is used as an underlay for a painting/photocomp or sketch. So it is tough to make out.

As for my own experience I use SU heavily in my conceptual work, along side my Art Director who is a LightWave master. SU/Vray combo produces results that are definitely comparable. With that said, if Google only made ONE upgrade for SU7 i would vote for high poly support. It is extremely difficult to bring in elements modeled in LW without SU simply bogging, even with polyreduce. If SU7 could support high poly models it would become a seamless part of the industry.

    • RE: Lively by Google

I attended a well known design school on the west coast. I just spoke with a former instructor and they have implemented SU into the core curriculum. It truly is an amazing design tool. I find myself being not just more productive, but having a lot of FUN when using it. It is not just architects - designers in products, entertainment and graphics are also interested in the development of SU as a sophisticated but simple tool. If Google is listening they will be sensitive to the sentiments expressed on this board - I just don't understand why they are so secretive about development. It makes it seem like they are going to do with SU what they are going to do with it, regardless of how its true core users feel about it. Its funny, because even if Google manages to get an entire generation of young users, if they do not further develop the app, then its user base, as it matures, will pursue something else.

      http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a155/santsephai/loft_post.jpg

made a few slight changes based on a lot of feedback from different sources.

thanks for the feedback, compliments and crits.

I tried to cool off the interior light so it matched the BG a bit better. Toned down the carpet flip πŸ˜„ and flipped the canvas for a bit better compositional read. (this is a fun/fantasy piece so i don't have a design doc. to adhere to)

The space was supposed to be less 'high-rise' and more 'swanky pad on the hill' so i figured it had some sort of green roof and vines growing up the walls.

thanks again for all the feedback!

those are great! the only thing i want to see is a person for scale...maybe seeing someone sitting on the interior couch or walking in.

    • RE: La loft revisited

thanks again for the feedback. All encouraging and helpfull.

      i'm a concept artist for film/tv/video games.

i agree with you on the minimalist room vs. populated ( i preferred the stark room)....but the vast majority disagreed with me πŸ˜„ so i listened and put some stuff in there.

i've made the light inside extremely warm vs. a cooler bg just to push the effect and separation, but if it is too much i can normalize the light more and even it out. thoughts?

re: the carpet...well...i was just being a little playful. and also, its a bit of a device to point to the focal point of the piece which is the girl.

    • Plugin request - part line geometry

Would it be possible to create a 'part line maker?'

basically, when doing a lot of props and vehicles I add part lines in photoshop post. It would be cool to draw your part lines in with the 'tools on surface' plugin, then hit a button and have the part line geometry created. It could be 'V' shaped or 'U' shaped etc.

      thanks!

    • RE: A Welcome Message to New SketchUcation Members

thanks! i'm mostly a photoshop painter, but as time has progressed, i've found that doing sketchup, then a render, and then post processing/painting in photoshop gives me great results. I'd really like to get more into the photoreal rendering. I'm using vray at the moment, but am always exploring...i just downloaded kerkythea(sp?). the stuff on my site is kinda old...so when some of the stuff i've worked on comes out, i'll update! It is more sketchup-render-paint stuff. I'm really inspired by the stuff you've done solo, and others here as well...so i'm excited to start exchanging some info!

      thanks again!

      hi there.

i've been using sketchup for a few years but this is the first time posting on this site. I just discovered it a few months ago and have been voraciously reading all the posts and installing scripts! i work in video games, film and television and absolutley love sketchup. just wanted to introduce myself and let the members of this board know how much i've learned in such a short time!

    • RE: I just got the Sketchupdate :( and send Adian a mail

pretty new to these forums, but have been using sketchup pretty regularly for the last few years. I am in the videogame/film/tv industry and have found sketchup to be heavily used in the design process. It's a similar industry to architecture, considering the needs for conceptual, photoreal designs. I have been waiting for sketchup to take the next step in terms of modelling and am hopeful that 7 will address some of the issues. I hope Google understands the widespread use of Sketchup in diverse industries. If in the next update there is little to address the need for better modelling, and maybe even more extensive lighting options (like the light up plugin) i think i'll have to bite the bullet and learn modo...ouch. I hope not because i love sketchup and am heavily invested in it. just my two cents.

i love this board by the way, have learned an amazing amount and am constantly inpressed with the quality of the work displayed!
