The question arises as to what will be THE INTENDED PLUGIN USE by the majority of users?

Foundation detail requiring a Realistic look for "bolts" in construction details is not high on my list.
The hierarchy of detail will depend on the "scale of detail".

I would suggest users be given the following options that allow a selection:

      1. No bolts to be shown
      2. Simple bolts without bevel
      3. Detailed bolts showing bevel.

      Hope this helps?

Thank you, TIG for your suggestions.

I managed to get it to function in 32bit W10 by disabling
plugins. Looks like there is a conflict, I did not identify which one
      as I used plugin SETS.

Good idea O'Brien. Look forward to the improvement.

      PLugins Manager
      Extensions Manager

I would suggest the following may be improvements:

      1. The name would be clearer to read if it read:
      PLUGINS Manager - SketchUcation
      rather than
      SketchUcation Plugins Manager

      2. Managing Sets
When a Set has been selected it would help if the title was
      identified.

Workflow for various stages can then be linked to a Set
      which can be verified.
The user can then select the defined Set for the tasks from a worksheet.
Some Sets are similar and it is not easy to identify when you come back
to a model after a few days or a week.

      3. Mnemonic aidin the shape of icons assists in recalling the function.
I think having the three primary shapes to identify
the functions will assist in identification.

circle, triangle and a square with assigned colour.

Some users may have difficulty with colours.
It helps in recalling each icon's function:
extension store, plugin manager, and extensions manager.

      Universal naming Guidelines for developers.

As Sketchup Extensions and plugins reaches some 800 plus the
      requirement for efficient management increases.

The current status of named extensions (extensions & plugins) is a "Tower of Babel"

Could not guidelines be introduced that added some level of "order" and "commonality"
      to the extensions.

Function of the plugin first then the author seems logical.

      For example:
      Truss - by Medeek
      Foundations - by Medeek

Having to recall the author is not intuitive when searching for your plugin'
My first thought is to search by "function".

    • RE: Medeek Wall Plugin

      Garry K,
The workflow you describe (reference) exists in Chief Architect.

The downside of Chief Architect is the "box paradigm" which allows for the ease
of drawing in 2D which is also being created in 3D is the necessity to work in a restricted "box".

Future changes to floor levels etc. create additional requirements and adjustments which are not always intuitive.

The workflow of Chief may, however, offer some ideas as to how to implement a similar method in SketchUp.

I think you should develop your plugin for the following reasons:

      1. You have a good reputation for the plugins you have produced to date.
You are a "known" developer among SketchUp users.

      2. Your plugin would be suitable for SU 2017. You are more likely to maintain
your plugin for future SketchUp versions. Continuity and maintenance of your plugin
are important to the user of SketchUp plugins.

The general weakness with numerous plugins or extensions is:

      1. varying skill levels of the developers
      2. different methods of layout and process increase the difficulty
of using multiple plugins or extensions
      3. Instruction videos, manuals or information sheets vary greatly in quality and clarity.

Hope this gives you more insight into one "SketchUp users" point of view and why
I would like you to develop your plugin

      Updating extensions / plugins

Two classes of Extensions and Plugins exist
depending on the method of install.

The method of updating these extensions/plugins depends on the class. (method of install)

      1. Extension Warehouse - Installs

      2. ExtensionStore in SketchUcation Tools - Installs

      3. Update in SketchUp Extensions - applies only to Extension Warehouse installs

      4. Updates for extensions and plugins using ExtensionStore in SketchUcation Tools

      • applies to extensions and plugins installed using ExtensionStore in SketchUcation Tools

This is obviously not an ideal situation.

However, progress is being made incrementally πŸ˜„

    • RE: [Plugin] LSS Zone

plugin - LSS Zone Used in conjunction with LSS Arch Lite

Use of LSS Zone for concept sketch design.
The following comments relate to this use of LSS Zone for concept Sketch Design.

LSS Zone can be improved for Sketch Design if the drawing of a Zone is similar to drawing walls in LSS Arch Lite.
At present, it is difficult to determine if a right angle has been drawn in LSS Zone. I like the firm snapping and
guide symbols used in LSS Arch Lite, these would help in LSS Zone.

Using LSS Zone in the Sketch Design phase gives the following advantages:

      1. Quick "block modelling" of required rooms or zones
      2. The Client's Brief can be checked quickly in regards floor areas and hence costs (based on $/sq. metre)
      3. The "volume massing study with LSS Zone" allows quick insights to the evolving "shape" which then illustrates likely issues as height (setback requirements) and the sun (shadow)

Your present focus for LSS Zone is for the analysis of rooms for multi-residential buildings.
The first time user of LSS Zone is most likely doing smaller scale projects.
The use of LSS Zone in the Sketch Design phase could be of interest if they were
      alerted to its potential use.

    • Integration of SketchUp suite of apps with Chief Architect

Integration of SketchUp suite of apps with Chief Architect

This thread attempts to aid Chief Architect users to understand the options available
in using SketchUp in their workflow.

Chief Architect users may not be fully aware of the SketchUp suite of software apps which can use available free and commercial extensions (plugins).
(note Extensions are just serious apps while plugins are often smaller in size
and were greater in number in the early evolution of SketchUp)

I assume those visiting this "thread" from the ChiefTalk group will
be looking for the benefits of including the SketchUp suite in their workflow.

SketchUp software is rapidly changing in my view as Trimble implements their "marketing strategy"
to become a serious player in the top list of 3D CAD programs. (ArchiCAD, Revit, etc).
This evolution of SketchUp which is offering accelerating improvements is possible due to
two key factors. The first is the power of the available chips as supplied by Nvidia and others.
The second is the exponentially improving "smart software" and AI.
We are now fully in a "vertical acceleration of change" on the graph of computing power and AI.
      (Artificial Intelligence)

      CHIEF ARCHITECT USERS.
This thread attempts to offer mine and others contributions as collective experiences and understanding of what SketchUp offers within a workflow to an external program as Chief Architect.
Change is "rapidly evolving" and no one has a crystal ball!
One view or many views do not make a stated view correct, so read with scepticism and apply your best intellectual analysis and rigour. Above all enjoy the arguments.

The suite of SketchUp apps currently available to complement Chief Architect are:

      1. mySketchUp - free
      2. SketchUp Make - free (capable using extensions (plugins) from a selection of over 800 to do specific focused tasks.
      3. SketchUp Pro.

      SketchUp Resources:
      3D Warehouse
Extension Warehouse (place for Extensions and plugins registered with Trimble for 3D Warehouse.
      SketchUcation PluginStore

Not many will have experience with the new mySketchUp browser app (software) which has only been available online in Beta version for less than a year. I could not understand why Trimble was giving away such a powerful browser app.

Linked to their Trimble Connect (free cloud storage of projects) any aware designer can carry out sophisticated design work or checking of documents online, for free. I asked the question to myself, what the heck is going on here!

Then the "penny dropped"! My guess is that Trimble is stepping up the 3D CAD ladder by "engaging with the young". The new architects and building designers and technicians who will be looking at software options say in 3 - 5 years (my guess).

      Trimble's improvements
In the SketchUp suite, improvements have been remarkable for the few years they have had the software. (previously owned by Google who mainly focused on "Earth" modelling. These were the dark days for SketchUp users as little real improvement was made to the core software)

A key feature of SketchUp is IFC export
SketchUp's IFC (Industry Foundation Class) export capability at present is rudimentary. I have tested it with Revit and all is good until you realise that the IFC wall of Sketchup does not integrate into the Revit structure in that you can not extend a Skp_IFC Wall, or increase its height etc.

The next phase of IFC hopefully will be improved interoperability
(just had to say that word - meaning the exchange of 3D CAD data - with other apps or computer programs)

I will consider a "roadmap" of how to inform and enlighten Chief Architect users without hiding the difficulties and shortcomings of SketchUp. I am hoping that the following contributions to this thread by others can aid me in this endeavour.

Combined with LSS Zone it provides flexible tools for sketch design and design development
